3 cops held over Indonesian’s rape claim...

A 25-year-old Indonesian woman claimed she was gang-raped by three policemen and the suspects have since been remanded for a week.

Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi confirmed receiving the report today and said the police will conduct a thorough investigation into the case.

He said the three suspects were picked up on Friday night and taken to the Bukit Mertajam magistrate’s court yesterday morning where a seven-day remand order was issued.

“We will be investigating this case under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape,” he told The Malaysian Insider when contacted.

The ordeal for the woman began at around 6.30am on Friday when she and her friend took a taxi home from work.

After dropping her friend off near the Megamall Shopping Complex in Prai, the woman and the taxi driver noticed a police patrol car following them.

The taxi was pulled over by two policemen in the patrol car where they demanded to see the driver’s license.
When they noticed the woman, they demanded to see the woman’s passport.

The woman did not have her original passport with her so she showed a photostat copy of her passport but the policemen refused to accept her excuses.

The policemen then handcuffed the taxi driver and told them that they will be arrested.

After much pleading by both of them, the police released the taxi driver but took the woman to the Prai police station.

At the police station, she was told that she will be arrested and placed in the lockup.

“She begged for them to release her and they asked her what she could give them to secure her release,” said Bukit Mertajam Barisan Nasional coordinator Lau Chiek Tuan who had assisted the restaurant worker and called a press conference yesterday to reveal the case.

He said the woman had offered to pay the four policemen a present at the police station at that time but they laughed off her offer.

“They asked her how many thousands she had with her to pay them and when she said she has nothing else but her body, three of them took her to a room at the station,” he said.

He claimed that the three policemen took turns raping the woman on a mattress in the room before they dropped her off at her home in Taman Inderawasih.

She was also warned not to tell anyone about the incident.

“She came to us for help at around 2pm on Friday and we took her to the Bukit Mertajam police station to lodge a police report,” he said.

He said the woman claimed that she has heard about similar cases happening to other women before this.

“Her friends told her that this has happened to some other women before and she does not want this to happen to another woman so she came to us for help,” he told The Malaysian Insider.

Lau urged the police to take this case seriously as it is an abuse of power by policemen to victimise an innocent woman.

“I hope the police chief will ensure that a proper investigation is conducted in this case,” he said.- malaysian insider
