Pemimpin2 UMNO broker tanah Melayu Pulau Pinang...

  Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir

UMNO made profits by selling Malay kampungs...

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng told a Malay crowd in Bayan Baru yesterday that it is Umno Penang leaders who bought and sold their land.

Lim said Umno had slandered the DAP and Penang government, by saying the party had purchased land in Balik Pulau, whatever the cost, to "chase out the Malays".

"It is the leaders from Umno who betrayed the Malays by selling their land for profit," he told the 100-odd crowd during his speech at the event to honour the Bukit Gedung Malay hawkers for winning a national award this year for cleanliness, safety and health.

Lim accused Umno of lying because the DAP never bought even an inch of land in Balik Pulau.

DAP had only bought a building in Rangoon Road in George Town for its Penang headquarters, he added.

Lim was responding to Wanita Umno delegate Rohaya Abu Ismail who bashed DAP and the Penang government for allegedly "oppresing the Malays" in the state, especially in land and house matters.

She blasted the DAP of having an "hidden agenda" to chase the Malays out from Balik Pulau.

Lim then cited a case in Kampung Terang, Balik Pulau, where 10 acres of land was purchased on Jan 31, 2012, for RM8.6 million.

The plot was bought over from 31 land owners by Maison Height Sdn Bhd, he explained.

Three months later, on May 16, a similar plot of land was sold for RM13.5 million, for a profit of RM5 million, to a third party, he added.

Lim revealed that Maison Height was owned by Bukit Mertajam Umno chief Musa Sheikh Fadzir (left) and Bukit Gelugor chief Omar Faudzar.

"These two Umno leaders should be condemned for profiting from the sale of Malay land in Balik Pulau," said Lim.

"Instead, I was blamed although I did not get a sen," he lamented.- mk

Malays the majority, will survive without UMNO...

The Malays would survive even if Umno is defeated, as they are the majority of this country, said opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

He was responding to the Prime Minister Najib Razak’s speech at the Umno general assembly where he said that if Umno is defeated the Malays are damned.

"For those who are young, you must appreciate the fact that you must not allow these leaders to dictate or determine our future.

“Don't let our future be in the hands of the corrupt few. You must have confidence and courage to change," said Anwar.

Anwar, also the Permatang Pauh MP, was speaking in Penang at the Konrad Adenauer School for Young Politicians Meeting on Integration, Good Governance and Democracy in Asia last evening.

He said some may be uncertain of change, thinking that BN or Umno can reform themselves or that Najib's transformation agenda may work.

However, the conduct of their leaders at this week's Umno assembly revealed that even the so-called liberals in the party has becomes "extremely racist", he added.

Anwar did not name the leaders but DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had hit out at Ummo Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin for allegedly playing the race and religious card at the AGM when he raised the issue of Malays joining the party, describing it as "chauvinistic".

Lim had chided Khairy (right), who is also youth and sports minister, he was often regarded as more liberal compared to his comrades.

Until the AGM that is, when he reportedly warned the non-Malays not to question Malay special rights, reminding them of the "promise" made as part of the social contract when the country gained independence from British rule in 1957.

"To my mind this should give us enough courage, that we have a clear choice, to overcome fear," Anwar said.

"I am speaking here with confidence and a smile but in a matter of weeks, I can be a free man or I may be in jail," he added, referring to his second sodomy case, which is awaiting the Federal Court's decision.

"But our future can be determined by our common resolve."

Bastion of Malays are speaking up

Anwar said at times he felt disturbed when people ask why the Malays prefer not to change.

There are Malays who would not sit back and condone corruption or racism, he insisted.

"I can see in their tweets and Facebook comments. Young Malays even those from universities which are supposed to be the bastion of Malays are speaking up," he stressed.

He recalled the remarks of former American vice-president Al Gore (left), who said it was historical and a world record that Anwar managed to garner 52 percent of the popular vote in the last general elections.

He said he had never seen this happen anywhere in the world where there is semi-authoritarian rule, no access to the mainstream media for the opposition, where elections are allegedly fraudulent, where about 400,000 voted one week earlier and their votes are kept in police custody.

Anwar was then responding to a question by one of the participants of the session who asked how far would Najib go to allow right-wing groups - who often described themselves as defenders of Islam and the Malay race - dictate the country's future.

Anwar said jokingly, "It is like Limbo Rock, the song made popular by Chubby Checkers, how low can you go?"

But he told the 40-odd audience not to generalise because these so-called defenders of the Malays and Islam hardly talked about hardcore poverty or lack of opportunism for the poor.

"When talk of the National Economic Policy (which provides opportunities for poor Malays), they happen to be in the top financial brackets and are doing extremely well," said the former deputy prime minister.

He said such quarters are bigots who try to show how righteous they are but "there is nothing religious about their lifestyle".

"If you are so racist, you cannot represent Islam," Anwar quipped.

Umno failed the Malays

However, Anwar noted that in authoritarian rule, there is always a tendency to swing to the extreme when leaders are desperate.

"Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.

"Racism is the only game they can cling on to. Can they talk about governance? Or about ridding the country of corruption?

"They play the race card because you challenge them. They will say do not question their rights. Who are they defending?"

Anwar said Malays have been in power since independence and that Malay political power is Umno's power.

"Yet, they failed miserably in protecting the Malays," he said.

After the two-hour meeting, Anwar met with the Penang chief minister at a ceremony to honour the Bukit Gedung Malay hawkers complex in Bayan Baru, which won a national award this year for cleanliness, safety and health.

Accompanying Lim were Deputy Chief Minister II Rashid Hasnon, PAS deputy president Mohammed Sabu, Batu Maung assemblyman Abdul Malik Kassim and former state assembly speaker Abdul Halim Hussein.- mk

Cina Pulau Pinang kuat kerana kegiatan haram...

Penang success due to Chinese illegal businesses...

Penang again comes under attack at the Umno annual general assembly today with an Umno leader attributing the strength and success of the Chinese economy there to illegal businesses.

Permatang Pauh delegate Zaidi Mohd Said (right) added Umno leaders are too fearful to reprimand the wrongdoings of the Chinese, even when their "crimes" are committed in "broad daylight".

"They (Chinese) are doing it in broad daylight, but we and our leaders are too nice and afraid to point out their wrongdoings.

"We know that the strength of the Chinese economy are generated through illegal businesses.

"Through gambling, prostitution, vices and other illegal activities," Zaidi said at the third day of the 68th Umno AGM in Kuala Lumpur.

Earlier this week Umno leaders accused the DAP-led Penang government of allegedly trying to drive out the Malays.

However, in his debate on Umno president Najib Abdul Razak's policy speech, Zaidi said he believes the Chinese will fearfully respect the current Malay government if the source of their "illegal" economy is curbed.

'DAP fears not MCA, Gerakan'

Differing with another delegate's speech today, Zaidi admitted that without the votes of the Chinese in Penang, BN could never take back the state.

"Malays only have 14 out of 40 state seats in Penang, and this means no matter how hard we contest, without the votes of the Chinese, BN would never win," he stressed as Najib, seated on the stage, looked on.

Accusing Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng of "disregarding the feelings of the Malays", the Penang delegate added Lim has never once felt threatened by the other BN component parties MCA and Gerakan.

"It is because of this that Lim rules with pride," he pointed out.

Zaidi also implied that the Penang government is allegedly picking on the Malays, by "playing" with them, barring them and destroying their shops.

He warned Umno members if they are always hoping for an easy way out, plotting amongst themselves and expecting riches, they will forever be humiliated and debased.- mk

Prove Chinese illegal businesses flourishing in Penang

Anonymous 007 - Is Zaidi Mohd. Said , saying that the police in Penang are closing their eyes on illegal trade in Penang? Some Malays are angry because their commission from Govt. contract have been lost.

James_3392  - Finally at least one UMNO leader openly acknowledged the strength and resilient of Chinese run businesses, and he chooses UMNO GA to broad cast it,illegal means or otherwise, who care, after all corruption is also illegal, but then is in the DNA of UMNO,so we do illegal things together with UMNO, it will become legal, Penang Lang, you agree with me?

lionking  - Drugs, gambling and prostituition and of course human trafficking cannot happen without the tacit support of those in power in the government. Is this a fair assumption.

factnot fiction  - If the Chinese are doing illegal businesses then arrest them. The fact that they are not arrested could it be that the ruling government is corrupted? It is not a matter of being nice. Lu tolong gua,gua tolong lu...

MinahBulat  - This is getting better than I thought, driving out the Malays from Penang, now Chinese are doing illegal business in Penang. UMNO boys go on bashing the Chinese, notice if you will the DAP members are smiling and taking down notes. No need Chinese votes is also being called/ Come on today is Friday, you need to turn up the heat more on Chinese bashing. Come GE 14 the Chinese and all NON Malays will be made to remember what these UMNO goons has said. Najib after loosing GE 14 , you really can ask " Apa lagi Cina mau/".

– tmi

UMNO can’t use Sedition Act to stay in power, warns Pak Lah...

Amid Umno's jubilant greeting over the retention of the Sedition Act 1948, former party president and prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi warned that the law should not be abused to help the party stay in power.

Writing in his blog soon after his successor Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced a U-turn on his promise to repeal the act, Abdullah reminded Umno members that the party could only stay in power with the people's support.

"In our enthusiasm to retain the Sedition Act, I remind Umno members that the act is not to be used to keep Umno in power.

"Umno's power and strength comes from the people's support. Remember, if the people no longer support us, there is no law on God's earth that can save Umno from losing power," Abdullah said.

The former prime minister, however, agreed with the decision to retain the colonial-era law.

He also noted the enthusiasm with which Umno delegates had shown when Najib said the act would remain in his policy speech earlier today.

"I support the decision to retain or amend any laws that protect national harmony, that uphold our constitution, that affirm the social contract forged by our forefathers.

"And that ensures that the federation of Malaysia is not destroyed by irresponsible people. All this, I support," he said before stating his caution.

At the Umno general assembly, Najib had said the Sedition Act would not only be retained, but strengthened with amendments to protect the sanctity of Islam, curb insults against other religions and to punish anyone who called for the secession of Sabah and Sarawak from Malaysia.

Najib said he decided this after considering feedback from Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Wanita Umno, Pemuda Umno, Puteri Umno, the grassroots, as well as non-governmental organisations.

"Hence I, as the prime minister, decided that the Sedition Act 1948 will remain," he said, amid roars of approval from the delegates gathered at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

He said this was Umno's wish, adding that he believed their friends in Barisan Nasional (BN) would be with them.

Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong, however, issued a nuanced protest in a statement this afternoon, noting public dissatisfaction over the abuse of the act against academics and public intellectuals.

"Gerakan's fervent hope is that the Sedition Act will eventually be replaced with a comprehensive National Harmony Act. The new framework must include a set of punitive and positive measures to ensure societal stability but at the same time promotes national unity and harmony," he said.

Noting the "long struggle" of 20 years to repeal the Internal Security Act, Mah said he believed a repeal of the Sedition Act would be done "when all parties are ready and open minded".

"In line with the growing tide of democratisation, I believe this will eventually happen.

"In the meantime, I urge the authorities to act without fear and favour and do not abuse the Sedition Act to silence legitimate political dissent."

Mah noted that the failure to charge Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali over the call to burn the Malay language Bibles had fuelled perceptions that the act has not been used in a fair and just manner.- tmi

Kritik isu nama jalan bukan serang istana...

Chiding change in road name not blitz on royals...

Criticising the government's move to change road names to those of the sultans should not be seen as a challenge to the monarchy.

"Taking issues with the proposed changes for some street names in Kuala Lumpur is not necessarily an indication of challenge to the the country's monarchy

"There are some practical and valid reasons to question such a proposal, whoever is behind it," said constitutional law expert professor Abdul Aziz Bari.

Yesterday at Umno Youth's annual general meeting its chief Khairy Jamaluddin in his fiery speech cited the criticisms as "proof" that the Malay institutions are being questioned.

Abdul Aziz reminded Khairy that what Umno and its former president Dr Mahathir Mohamad had done in the 90s in relation to curbing the powers of the royalty was far worse.

"Umno Youth chief KJ may not be aware of those incidents," he quipped.

Abdul Aziz pointed out that “the Umno press humiliated the rulers during the 1993 constitutional crisis during the amendment to immunity provisions for the rulers.”

“The same took place in 1983; the first time Mahathir confronted the rulers in a crisis following an amendment to the Constitution,” said Abdul Aziz.

In 1993, the Malaysian parliament passed the amendments to remove legal immunity of the royalty with changes to Articles 32, 38, 42, 63, 72 and 181 in the Federal Constitution.

Before that, sultans who have violated the law cannot to be prosecuted by the criminal court unless he voluntarily surrenders his legal immunity.

Currency notes and stamps, not roads

Abdul Aziz also suggested that instead of naming roads, perhaps the better suggestion to institutionalise the rulers who have held the post of Agongs is to have their photos being used in the Malaysian currency notes.

“So instead of just the first Agong, Tuanku Abdul Rahman of Negeri Sembilan, we may have the second, third and others on the notes.

“For example, Tuanku Abdul Rahman for the RM1 note, Sultan Hisamudin of Selangor for the RM2, Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail for RM5 and so on,” suggests Abdul Aziz.

He also said issuing commemorative stamps will also serve the same purpose.

“One just wonders why the stamps with the state rulers are no longer issued by Pos Malaysia?

“That is more sinister than disagreeing with the renaming of major KL streets with the former Agongs That is more significant and meaningful than just putting their names for the KL streets,” said Abdul Aziz. - mk

Waterspout surprises Penang ferry passengers...

A video of a waterspout forming in the Penang Channel had been making its rounds on Facebook.

The 2 minutes 35 seconds footage was believed to be recorded today afternoon by a passenger on the ferry which plies the island and the mainland.

The recording also showed ships in the area apparently moving away from the waterspout in a bid to avoid any negative effects.

The video had been shared more than 270 times at the time of writing while also been uploaded to video sharing site Youtube.

However, state government said they have not received any official report on this phenomena and the Meteorological Department could not be reached for comments.

The United States National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) defines a waterspout as a whirling column of air and water mist.

These natural phenomenon are associated with severe thunderstorms and often accompanied by high winds and seas.

Previous sightings this year throughout the country include Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan (Aug 8), Kota Kinabalu, Sabah (Oct 9), Alor Besar, Kedah (Oct 13), Bintulu, Sarawak (Oct 18) and Pendamaran, Klang (Oct 21).- theSundaily

Duit penyamun tentu banyak, jangan tanya berapa

– tmi

Hanya bangsa Melayu UMNO akan dibangsatkan...

Photo: Kalau UMNO jatuh, bangun balik, apa susah. Pemimpin UMNO saja takut jatuh tak boleh bangun2 nanti. UMNO dah jatuh pun kat Selangor.. Elok je org melayu.. Kat Kelantan, UMNO dah berpuluh tahun kecundang, agama Islam terus berkembang..

Retorik sepanjang zaman. Retrorik merapu tahap gaban! Since when if UMNO collapse, Islam juga turut hancur? Najib is talk rubbish again!!!... Tak payah nak cakap soal agama kalau bini sendiri pun tak pakai tudung.. Dah hafal apa Najis Mughallazah belum??

Tu satu hal gak, pastu ugut2 konon UMNO tumbang, melayu akan dibangsatkan. Woi!!! Apa punya mentaliti PM Malaysia ni?? Seriously, Najib Razak adalah first ever PM in in Malaysia using word Bangsat. Congrats on using a bangsat language.. Rilek laaaa, dulu ko pun Haramjadahkan peneroka Felda.. Dah lupa?? No UMNO Malay warriors dare to stand up and question him back about his actions? 1MDB, Battersea Powerplant Redevelopment, etc.?

Why UMNO now sound desperate? Why don't right away claim that UMNO as god? UMNO yang menentukan nasib orang Melayu & kesucian agama Islam. Nak sangat kan? Satu lagi Jib!!! Then explain how far UMNO have taken Malays since 1957?

Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak has reminded party members that the only way to ensure Malays are protected is to see the recovery of Umno.
If this was accurately quoted in Najib's closed-door briefing with Umno delegates yesterday (Nov 25), then the prime minister has insulted the intelligence of peace-loving Malaysians.
The threat to national unity is racial and religious extremism propagated by radical Malays like Perkasa, Isma and even some Umno members.
Essentially, what Najib is saying is that if Umno loses, the Malays will be damned.
No, Mr Umno president, Mr Prime Minister! If Umno loses, only Umno and its interests will be damned. Only Umno members will be damned.
That's because Umno is only a percentage of Malays in Malaysia. The PAS Malays, the PKR Malays, the DAP Malays and all apolitical Malays who voted against BN-Umno will not be damned. That's a fact and reality because Umno does not form the majority of Malays in Malaysia today.
In fact, BN-Umno lost the popular vote for the first time in electoral history in the last 13th General Election (GE13).
Umno can only recover and regain the confidence of the majority of peace-loving Malaysians by acting against individuals and organisations that continue to act and spew sensitive statements that are clearly aimed at shattering national unity.
Unfortunately for Umno, it is arrogant and refuses to face reality and the changing times. The Umno-led BN government's continuous refusal to put a stop to the antics of racial and religious extremists for more than a year is certainly a suspicious political agenda.
The Malaysian Insider quoted Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Ahmad Puad Zarkashi as saying Najib, in a strongly worded message, told delegates that the Umno machinery was not doing enough despite more than a year having passed since GE13.
Puad, who relayed the prime minister's message to the media outside the Merdeka Hall, said Najib was clearly unhappy with efforts being made to ensure victory in the next polls.
"He said that if Umno loses, the Malays will be damned. Those were his words. Not only that, he said religion will be at stake if Umno loses," he said.
Puad said Najib pinpointed the scenario of a defeated Umno and the Malay decline as a reminder to the delegates to be proactive and work towards rejuvenating the party.
He said he had never seen Najib, who is known for his calm approach, lashing out or using such strong words.
Najib over the past few weeks have been telling party leaders to come to terms with current political realities and not to obstruct the young and professionals from joining and contributing to the party.
He said Umno must embrace youths if the BN wishes to restore its influence.
Are those really Umno and Malaysia's problems?
Perhaps Umno should reflect whether good governance and political sincerity are the real reasons for the majority of Malaysians rejecting BN after 57 years of Merdeka.

“Angka ranking pendidikan kita jatuh setiap tahun.

"Mengapa saya katakan Melayu sedang terancam?

Sebulan selepas pilihan raya umum ke-13 tahun lepas, Husam berkata satu kaji selidik dijalankan Merdeka Centre menunjukkan 26% orang Melayu merasakan mereka sedang terancam.

Photo: Kalau UMNO jatuh, bangun balik, apa susah. Pemimpin UMNO saja takut jatuh tak boleh bangun2 nanti. UMNO dah jatuh pun kat Selangor.. Elok je org melayu.. Kat Kelantan, UMNO dah berpuluh tahun kecundang, agama Islam terus berkembang..

Retorik sepanjang zaman. Retrorik merapu tahap gaban! Since when if UMNO collapse, Islam juga turut hancur? Najib is talk rubbish again!!!... Tak payah nak cakap soal agama kalau bini sendiri pun tak pakai tudung.. Dah hafal apa Najis Mughallazah belum??

Tu satu hal gak, pastu ugut2 konon UMNO tumbang, melayu akan dibangsatkan. Woi!!! Apa punya mentaliti PM Malaysia ni?? Seriously, Najib Razak adalah first ever PM in in Malaysia using word Bangsat. Congrats on using a bangsat language.. Rilek laaaa, dulu ko pun Haramjadahkan peneroka Felda.. Dah lupa?? No UMNO Malay warriors dare to stand up and question him back about his actions? 1MDB, Battersea Powerplant Redevelopment, etc.?

Why UMNO now sound desperate? Why don't right away claim that UMNO as god? UMNO yang menentukan nasib orang Melayu & kesucian agama Islam. Nak sangat kan? Satu lagi Jib!!! Then explain how far UMNO have taken Malays since 1957?

– tmi

UMNO under threat, not Malays and Islam...

Panellists at a forum last night concur that it is only Umno and the Malay elites who are at risk of becoming sidelined like the Red Indians in the US, not ordinary Malays.

Among them include PAS vice president Husam Musa, who said that most parliamentary seats would remain Malay-majority even if Pakatan Rakyat takes over the government, and only a redelineation exercise could change that.

He pointed out that of the parliament’s 222 seats, Malay majority seats outnumber non-Malay majority seats by 52 seats.

“What Perkasa and the former chief justice (Abdul Hamid Mohamad) feared is not that Malays become Red Indians, but that Umno would become read Indians,” he said told a forum themed ‘Are Malays and Islam under threat?’ last night.

Nevertheless, he cited latest surveys by the pollster Merdeka Centre showing that 55 percent of Malays felt threatened, up from 26 percent in the first months after the 2008 general election.

This, he said, is due to an ‘intensive’ propaganda war in mainstream media.

“We cannot deny that this psychological war has made its impact. Whether Malays are under threat is another matter, but to their minds, they have accepted (the message of) Umno’s psychological war that Malays are under threat.

“Perhaps that is why the chief justice made his statement a few days ago that Malays would become Red Indians. In my opinion, the longer Umno rules Malaysia, the sooner Malays will become Red Indians,” he said.

Husam was responding to Abdul Hamid’s statement on Sunday, urging PAS to unite with Umno and stop DAP, or Malays would become marginalised like the Red Indians in the US.

Incomprehensible drivel

Meanwhile for national laureate A Samad Said, he said the “seasonal” drivel that Malays and Islam are under threat comes during elections and during Umno’s general assembly, and is hard to comprehend.

This is because on contrary to the claims, Samad (left) said the positions of power remain firmly in Malay hands over the past five decades, including all previous prime ministers, deputy prime ministers, home ministers, menteri besars, and most members of parliament.

This is apart from the civil service and the military, where most of its members are Malay, and the Malay Rulers.

“With such solid foundations, what is the basis for news reports that Malays and Islam are threatened?

“This is what keeps going about in the media, and sometimes I think that it is the non-Malays who are being threatened.

He also highlighted that all Malaysian prime ministers to date were of Malay noble origin (bangsawan) apart from Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“Did you realise that those in power for the past 57 years come only from a certain group? Why does not come from below? People who are cleaner, more visionary, and more ambitious?” he said.

Meanwhile, Selangor University law lecturer Abdul Aziz Bari (right) said the position of the Malay Rulers - and by extension the Malays - are now more secure than ever, because those who had threatened it are now weak.

This is because most constitutional amendments protecting the Bumiputera and Islam require a two-third majority in Parliament, as well as consent from the Conference of Rulers.

BN, which had made a constitutional amendment in 1993 to strip the sultans of their immunity to legal prosecution, had lost the two-third majority in 2008.

“Umno, in certain circumstances, goes against the constitution. It is not the (constitutional) provisions that pose a threat, but Umno’s attitude.

“Now that Umno is weak, they are safe. So back to the question whether Malays and Islam are threatened, I think they are safe because those who like to ‘steal’ from them are weak,” he said.-mk

Mahathir suruh perwakilan UMNO balun pemimpin2 depa...

Criticise Umno leadership at assembly, Dr M tells delegates...

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called on Umno delegates to be critical and speak their minds at its assembly which begins tomorrow if the party is to survive and move forward.

He said Umno members must be brave in openly criticising their leaders, including their presidents, said Dr Mahathir, who was, at one time, the party’s longest serving president.

“Everyone knows that Umno now is not as popular as before. There are those who say Umno is not relevant.

“If Umno is defeated and wiped off the face of the earth, its leaders and members cannot deny that they had contributed to the downfall of the party that has done a lot for Malays and Malaysia,” said Dr Mahathir in a posting in his blog chedet.cc.

His message to Umno leaders and members comes a day before the country’s largest party is scheduled to hold its 68th assembly in Kuala Lumpur beginning November 26.

Dr Mahathir staunchly criticised Umno members in the past, and had gone on record to withdraw his support for president Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, who is also the country’s prime minister.

He said he did this after his recommendations to Najib fell on deaf ears.

Dr Mahathir’s most recent criticism was aimed at Najib’s policy of giving out cash transfers such as the People Aid Scheme and his management of debt-ridden sovereign wealth fund, 1Malaysia Development Berhad.

In calling for Umno members to be critical, Dr Mahathir said he himself had been openly criticised and even came close to losing the presidency.

The same, he said, happened to Umno’s first president Tunku Abdul Rahman, and his successors, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein and Tun Hussein Onn.

“Without criticism, leaders will believe everything they do is correct. But in reality, it may be wrong.”

Dr Mahathir also touched on his fallout with Najib, although he did not explicitly mention Najib’s name.

“I was advised to not criticise openly. In reality, I had given my criticisms repeatedly behind closed doors, especially on Bumiputera and Umno problems.

“But it did not work. So I am forced to criticise openly.”

Dr Mahathir also said the "warlord culture" among Umno branch and division leaders corrupted the party to the point where bright and talented members got sidelined.

This has led to the party’s grassroots's structure being dominated by mediocre leaders, he said.

“Umno only accepts new members who do not threaten the position of their leaders at all levels. Branches do not accept those who can challenge the position of branch leaders.

“This is because there are rewards for being branch leaders.

“These branch leaders are then only replaced by weaker and mediocre successors as they are the only type of people the leadership accepts.

“That is why when the question crops up, ‘Who will be Selangor menteri besar if Barisan Nasional wins?', there is no answer... even though Selangor is full of educated and talented Malays who do not have to use Umno to enrich themselves.

“These people are barred from entering Umno. Those who make it in are barred from climbing up as leaders.

“Because of this disappointment, those who have talent are going into other parties. Umno will fade and this sacred party will fade away.” - msn news
