"Janganlah kerana hendak mendapat undi lalu Islam diperdagangkan.

Baca seterusnya...

- mk

Gerald Rentap Jabu

A disastrous ‘miring’,Signs of bad omen for Gerald Rentap Jabu?...

Iban elders who are considered experts in interpreting omens say that Gerald Rentap Jabu, the BN candidate for Layar, may be facing several hurdles before he can win the seat following a disastrous “miring” ritual. The ritual was held before nomination day at Penom longhouse in Betong.

Douglas Uggah, the BN candidate for Bukit Saban and Rentap performed the “miring” ceremony, where two sets of “piring” (offering ingredients) were prepared for them.

It has always been the practice of Ibans to perform a “miring” to seek blessing, protection, courage, strength as well as victories from their “petara” (gods) before they go for headhunting expeditions, or before starting to farm, hunt etc.

Depending on the purpose of the “miring”, either chickens or pigs are slaughtered. For headhunting expeditions and elections, pigs are slaughtered and their livers are examined on whether they portend good or bad omens.

So like other Iban candidates, Uggah and Rentap performed theirs as they considered their contests for Bukit Saban and Layar as “war”. Uggah’s opponent in Bukit Saban is Noel Changgai Bucking of PKR, while Rentap will be facing Vernon Aji Kedit, also from PKR.

Sometimes strange things do happen.

After the ritual ended, the platform upon which Rentap’s offerings were placed fell onto the floor and the “piring” were crushed and scattered all over.

Those present were stunned, saying that this was a very bad omen which could indicate that Rentap might lose in the election. The interpretation of the incident was relayed to his father and the former Layar assemblyman Alfred Jabu Numpang.

Fearful of bad omens that might befall his son, Jabu decided to have another big “miring” at his longhouse in Ensurai when five pigs were slaughtered. The purpose was to appease the “angry spirits” and at the same time to annul the previous night of “bad” omen.

Whether the “bad” omen is going to happen or not is yet to be seen. But as a novice in politics, Rentap is unlike his father who is noted for his political shrewdness and had the oratory skill to convince people to support him.

Jabu is noted for being adept at playing good and dirty politics; otherwise, how would he be able to last more than 42 years as the Layar elected representative. But in those 42 years, the former deputy chief minister leaves behind “bad” and “good” legacies.

What could possibly be considered Jabu’s positive contributions are the upgrading of Betong from district into division, the building of Mara technical and secondary schools and upgrading basic facilities in the town.

The major complaints against Jabu include leaving Layar as one of the most underdeveloped constituencies in the state with poor road accessibility to the rural areas, lack of clean water and electricity supply. A number of projects under Jabu’s ministry have either failed or were poorly managed.

Examples of failed or “white elephant” projects include the Sungai Antu Agriculture Centre in Betong, the underutilized million-ringgit Layar Growth Centre, empty shophouses due to lack of business, “buah kepayang” the “rambutan” project, “ikan empurau” cold storage  refrigeration, Bintulu fertilizer, the Pakit agriculture complex, Bukit Saban Resort and failure to make millionaires (as promised) from Salcra schemes which are tasked to develop native customary rights (NCR) land.

The recent police reports by scores of tuai rumah (longhouse chiefs) against Jabu are also very damaging to his son’s campaign.  The tuai rumah alleged that Jabu had failed to inform them of the true intention of perimeter survey under Section 6 of the Sarawak Land Code which was carried out by the Land & Survey Department.

Rentap, who replaces his father in Layar, has to bear the brunt of the people’s disillusionment with his father and the BN. However, we have to wait until the evening of May 7 to know the truth or falsity of the prediction of the Iban elders.- Joseph Tawie, theantdaily
