Anwar, Musa Hitam dan Ku Li...

Anwar - Putrajaya sembunyi maklumat...

– MI

MH370:Anwar Ibrahim says government purposefully concealing information...

Malaysia's government is deliberately concealing information that would help to explain what happened to missing flight MH370, the country's opposition leader has claimed.

In an  interview that cast doubt on the official investigation into the disappearance of the plane, Anwar Ibrahim said the country's "sophisticated" radar system would have identified it after it changed course and crossed back over Malaysia.

Mr Anwar, who personally knew the pilot of the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 that went missing in the early hours of March 8 during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, called for an international committee to take over the Malaysian-led operation because "the integrity of the whole nation is at stake".

He indicated that it was even possible that there was complicity by authorities on the ground in what happened to the plane and the 239 people on board.

In an interview with the London Daily Telegraph, Mr Anwar said that he had personally authorised the installation of "one of the most sophisticated radar" systems in the world, based near the South China Sea and covering Malaysia's mainland and east and west coastlines, when he was the country's finance minister in 1994.

The 66-year-old was once deputy prime minister in Malaysia's ruling coalition, which has governed the country since independence from Britain in 1957.

However, after falling out with the country's leaders, he was charged with sodomy, imprisoned twice and beaten in custody. He now leads a pro-democracy coalition of parties that lost last year's election despite winning more than 50 per cent of the popular vote amid allegations of corruption by the government.

Mr Anwar said it was "not only unacceptable but not possible, not feasible" that the plane had not been sighted by the Marconi radar system immediately after it changed course. The radar, he said, would have instantly detected the Boeing 777 as it travelled east to west across "at least four" Malaysian provinces.

Mr Anwar said it was "baffling" that the country's air force had "remained silent", and claimed that it "should take three minutes under SOP [standard operating procedure] for the air force planes to go. And there was no response."

He added: "We don't have the sophistication of the United States or Britain but still we have the capacity to protect our borders."

He said the families of the 153 Chinese victims among those on board were right to demand information from the Malaysian government, which had permitted a multi-national search operation to spend a week looking in what it must have known was the wrong place.

"Why didn't we alert the Chinese, the Vietnamese that the operation should cease in the South China Sea and let them spend millions on search and rescue in a place that they know fairly well cannot be the site of the plane?"

As hope fades of recovering the plane's black box before its batteries start to fail, which could be as early as Monday, Mr Anwar said it was "at the least, incompetence" on the part of the Malaysian government that it is still not known what happened to the plane, but was also a deliberate "intention to suppress key information".

"Unfortunately the manner in which this was handled after the first few days was clearly suspect," he said. "One fact remains. Clearly information critical to our understanding is deemed missing.

"I believe the government knows more than us. They have the authority to instruct the air force ... or Malaysia Airlines. They are privy to most of these missing bits of information critical to our understanding of this mysterious disappearance of MH370."

Mr Anwar indicated that it was a possibility that officials on the ground were complicit in what happened on the plane.

However, he later added that "the realm of possibilities is so vague, I mean, anything can have happened", adding: "Whether they [the authorities] are complicit in a terrorist act, I'm not in a position to comment."

A source close to the government accused Mr Anwar of attempting to exploit the tragedy for political gain.

"The international media response, completely condemning Malaysia, is unfair. It's been partly orchestrated by Malaysia's opposition," the source said. "The situation is unprecedented. And the search has actually been handled well.

The government is coordinating an enormous operation, and both the commanders on the ground and all the international investigators involved have been complimentary about Malaysia's efforts."

Malaysian authorities did not respond officially to requests for comment on Mr Anwar's accusations, but have previously accused him of politicising the crisis.

Efforts to recover the plane in the southern Indian Ocean, more than 1600 kilometres off the coast of Perth, continued last night over a search area roughly the size of Poland. A British Trafalgar-class nuclear submarine is helping to hunt for wreckage, including the black box, before it stops emitting "pings".

Mr Anwar was convicted for sodomy, an offence under Malaysian law, for the third time hours before the flight went missing and is currently on bail pending appeal. He claimed that the government moved his court date to stop him standing in provincial elections.

Investigators and media have focused on the plane's pilot, Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah, a supporter of Mr Anwar's pro-democracy opposition coalition, despite there being no evidence against him.

Reports have claimed that Capt Zaharie was a "fanatic" who could have hijacked the plane in despair at the latest setback to the opposition leader. Both Mr Anwar and Capt Zaharie's family have strongly denied any such possibility.

"After personally having been subjected to such unjust accusations, I strongly feel that you should not cast aspersions against people until you have evidence to support it," he said.

"If you say or suggest that the pilot may have been involved, what about the concealing [of information]? He could not have concealed the radar readings. He could not have instructed the air force to remain completely silent. Or the prime minister to remain completely silent."

Describing him as an "ardent supporter", Mr Anwar said he had had several exchanges with Captain Zaharie and that he "was nice, smart, articulate - but there was clearly a strong passion for justice".

The disappearance of MH370 has placed the Malaysian government under unprecedented international scrutiny, with persistent criticism that the release of official information has been both inaccurate and inconsistent.

Hishammuddin Hussein, Malaysia's Defence Minister and acting Transport Minister, was criticised yesterday for claiming that MH370's disappearance was a "blessing in disguise" because its loss meant he now "understood the beauty of unity, the sweetness of having each other".

Mr Anwar said that "to save the country", an international committee should be established consisting of representatives of countries whose nationals were among the passengers, such as Chinese, Vietnamese, Malaysians and Australians.-The Telegraph, London

Tiada media berani dedah kebenaran isu Memali...

2. Saya bertanggungjawab sepenuhnya kepada peristiwa tersebut.

3. Bagaimanakah perasaan saya dengan peristiwa Memali.

Titik hitam karier politik

(i) Proses undang-undang hendaklah dipatuhi.

Musa: Nobody dared speak the truth on Memali...

On March 27, 2014, 9pm, (PAS vice president) Husam Musa and I were on the panel at a discussion hosted by the Kelantan government with the theme: 'Politik Malaysia: Dahulu dan Sekarang' (Malaysian Politics: Before and Now).

Professor Agoes (Muhammad Agus Yusoff) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia was the moderator.

The format of the discussion was similar to BBC's 'Hard Talk', where panelists are unscripted and not allowed to refer to any notes when answering questions from the moderator.

In the two hour-discussion, the moderator was combative, aggressive and provocative but I admit that he was also fair, independent and impartial.

At the end of the discussion, I was asked about the Memali incident. The question touched on three aspects:

  • That when the Memali incident took place, Dr Mahathir Mohamad was in China and I was the acting prime minister;

  • That I am fully responsible for the incident; and

  • My feelings about the incident.
I responded to the question using these four aspects:

1. I corrected the moderator by saying that as a professor, he should speak based on research and facts.

2. When Memali happened on Nov 19, 1985, Mahathir was in Kuala Lumpur and I was not acting prime minister.  The moderator then expressed shock and audibly said, "My God", which further surprised the audience.

3. As home minister, I had outlined a rough guideline as well as reminded and instructed the police on two things: abide by the law and avoid violence and bloodshed.

I had left it to the discretion of the police conducting the operations to decide on the best time and method to conduct the operation. I was not directly involved but I took responsibility and accountability over what had happened.

4. Sincerely and honestly, I admit that Memali was a black spot on my political career.

In the time permitted by the moderator, I had elaborated on the chronology of events. On the day of incident, the acting police chief (Amin Osman) and I had met with the prime minister in his office.

The acting police chief had given a briefing on what had happened during the police operations in Memali, resulting in the deaths of four police personnel and 14 civilians.

At the meeting, I urged Mahathir to delay his visit to China on three grounds:

1. The incident took place in Kedah, his home state;

2. It involved Malays and Muslims; and

3.  By delaying his visit to China, Mahathir will show that he prioritises and cares about domestic affairs.

Mahathir made the decision to still leave for China.

I informed him that I planned to table the matter (the Memali incident) in Parliament. I also sought that all media, local and foreign, give me 24 hours so I can get complete information on the incident.

I tabled the Memali matter in the Dewan Rakyat the next day, Nov 20, 1985, and then met with the media.

The conclusion is this:

1. It was not my intention to create a new polemic over Memali. The issue was revived due to my response to a question by the moderator at the panel discussion.

2. The main issue in this matter is the facts - that is whether I was acting prime minister on the day of the incident as Mahathir was not in the country.

Based on research from sources that I can still access today, it is clear that Mahathir was in the country when the Memali incident took place and I was not the acting prime minister.

3. In a court proceeding in my successful lawsuit against a writer several years ago (when Mahathir was still prime minister) my counsel asked the same two questions.

That is, whether Mahathir was in the country when the Memali incident happened and if I was acting prime minister on that day.

My answer was consistent. Mahathir was in the country and I was not acting prime minister. But no media reported it.

I have long been maligned, reproached and insulted over Memali by various quarters, including PAS.

As I recall, and especially after I resigned as minister, no one, be it in the government or Umno, was prepared to speak the truth.

I even offered to be interviewed exclusively by the media on the Memali incident but no media outlet was prepared to do so.

I understand that, at that point, no one wanted to take the risk of speaking the truth as this could affect the position of a sitting prime minister.

I have been alone in my quest for justice, but I continued to pray and finally, there was this programme in Kelantan, which I now see as Allah's answers to my prayers.

There was then room for me to correct a historical error on an important event which I was a part of. I am thankful to Allah for giving me that chance to correct the error.

I understand that the latest developments have invited remarks and views, both positive and negative, as well as further slander and accusations against me.

I leave everything to Allah, who is all-knowing, and to Him I seek guidance and justice.- Musa Hitam,mk

I was not acting PM on the day of Memali incident: Musa Hitam

Ku Li: Subsidies for IPPs an 'unforgivable sin'

The awarding of subsidies totaling RM136.5 billion to independent power producers from 1997 to 2011, when consumers are faced with cutbacks in subsidies, could be considered "a sin which cannot be forgiven”, said Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

The Kelantan prince and one time finance minister said although giving subsidies for consumer goods is not the best way to handle rising cost of living, this could still be accepted.

"However, a move which cannot be condoned and considered a sin is how the government is willing to give subsidies to the national energy supplier, independent power producers and other organisations related to energy.

"The sad part is that while these power producers continue to enjoy subsidised fuel prices, petroleum subsidy to the consumers - which purportedly cost the government RM14 billion in 2011 - was partly discontinued recently," he added.

Speaking at the launching of a book titled "Malaysia Kaya, Rakyat Miskin" (Malaysia is rich, people are poor) written by Anas Alam Faizli, Tengku Razaleigh said instead of giving subsidies to the IPPS, the money could be channeled to the poor.

The founder and former chairperson of Petronas also criticised the government's handling of the national oil company, citing a statistic that was in the book written by Anas Alam, where between 1974 and 2011, Petronas spent close to half a trillion ringgit.

This, he added, could have been better used to form a special fund for pension as done by a Scandinavian country.

Tengku Razaleigh, fondly known as Ku Li, also expressed regret that Petronas is being used as a "cash cow" to bail out government-linked corporations like Bank Bumiputera and Konsortium Perkapalan Berhad.

He said Petronas was also used to underwrite for the construction of the Petronas twin towers which costs RM6 billion and the administrative capital of Putrajaya at RM22 billion.

"The extravagance that had been forced on to Petronas has also deprived the company from the much needed cash build-up for reinvestment which would ensure its business sustainability.

"The truth is that there had been consistent political interference and this has affected Petronas, even though it is a professionally run corporation. What is needed is for Petronas is to look forward and find new opportunities to trade in other than oil and gas," he added.- mk
