'Pulau Pinang bukan saja mengenai meritokrasi'

Isu 'serang Cina' hanya pembuka tirai

Pak Samad: Jangan taksub 'Melayu terancam'...

Macam mana orang Melayu terancam?

Penang inherited poor Malays from BN...

DAP's Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari today rubbished a minister's accusation of subtle racism against Malays by the Penang government, stating that it was BN's decades long rule which was responsible for putting Malays there in the situation they are in today.

He added that since Pakatan Rakyat took over from BN in 2008, it has worked hard to uplift the poor, many of whom are Malays.

"It's a shame that Malays remain so poor in Penang after 50 years of BN rule - this is a situation we inherited and we are trying our best to help the poor," he told Malaysiakini.

He was responding to Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek (right) who was yesterday quoted as saying that a "particular state" was hiding behind the policy of meritocracy in order to subtly discriminate Malays.

"They don't say it outright - that this place is only for our race, and the Malays cannot come here.

"But they use certain approaches where, eventually, only one race will enjoy (the development) and this is a form of subtle racism," he was quoted as saying in Umno Online.

Shabery did not specifically mention Penang but it is the only state which majority population is not Malay or bumiputera and its DAP-led government has been a strong proponent of meritocracy.

'Penang not only about meritocracy'

Calling the claim baseless, Zairil said the Pakatan government in Penang does not purely promote meritocratic policies but also need-based policies.

"For example we give welfare aid to all families with household income below RM790 a month. This is the highest in Malaysia.

"Malay families form the bulk of recipients because they are the poorest and need it the most, not because they are Malays," he said.

He said another example was state government projects where 70 percent of them go to bumiputera contractors even though it is based on open tender.

"That means that there is no problem with Malay contractors competing with others.

"Just because Umno people lose their contracts due to their uncompetitiveness, that's not our problem," he said.

Likewise, he said this is also reflected in the state's housing policies which target middle and lower income groups where Malays would also stand to benefit.

"We practise fairness and justice through a transparent and accountable government," he said.- mk

People of Selangor  - UMNO, MCA and GERAKAN only take care of their cronies and friends. they dont care about the poor. Everyone of them in politic because of self $$$ interest. this is BN

mushiro  - Zairil, you are slightly wrong. Penang DAP inherited the very poor Malays and the other states inherited poor Malays. UMNO's 56 years rule and with the NEP of 40 years created only very very filthy rich Umnoputras. These Umnoputras only know to siphon money through negotiated overinflated projects, grants and embezzlement.

Anonymous #03913649 - I thnk UMNO/BN need to learn from Penang Govt....Don't be shy UMNO/BN if you failed in the past 60 years ...ask for helping hand !!! Penang Govt will show you how to help the Malays..

Shabery's cheeky remark calculated mischief...

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has slammed Communication and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek and other Umno leaders for their "Chinese bashing" over the past week, asking if it is a prelude to the coming Umno meet.

"The question many are asking is whether another ferocious bout of Chinese-bashing is in the works - just like the orgy of Chinese-bashing immediately after the 13th general elections," said Lim in his speech today.

He was referring to Shabery's (right) claim that Malays now feel unwelcome in an opposition-run state, insinuating DAP-held Penang, and Umno supreme council member Ibrahim Abu Shah warning that Malays may never rule again should BN lose power.

Lim said such remarks were "twisted, irresponsible, dangerous and wicked", and "calculated" to create havoc.

"These were variations of a constant theme of the rhetoric and politics of hatred, intolerance and extremism that has haunted Malaysia - that Malays and Islam are under siege, that the end of Umno rule would mean the end of Malay political power, that the Chinese are out to grab the political power of the Malays and make the Malays the 'refugees' in their own land, that the country would be turned into a Christian Malaysia - which are not only wild, baseless, far-fetched but downright mischievous, malicious, vile and seditious as calculated to cause maximum unrest and havoc in the country," he said.

Umno vice president and Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein confirming that the upcoming Umno assembly will discuss the relevance of maintaining the Chinese school system, said Lim, is further evidence that race will take centrestage.

Lim, who is Gelang Patah MP, said it was therefore refreshing that in contrast to Umno leaders, Lembah Pantai MP and PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar has launched her book 'Masa Depan, Masa Kita' in Chinese.

"This is particularly significant as recent years have witnessed an unprecedented upsurge of the rhetoric and politics of hatred, intolerance and extremism causing the worst racial and religious polarization for over four decades.

"We must take heart that the voices of hatred, extremism and intolerance come from a raucous minority," he added in his speech for the launch of Nurul Izzah's book in Kuala Lumpur. - mk

Stop obsessing about Malays under threat...

National laureate A Samad Said had advised the Malay community not to be obsessed over claims by certain quarters that Malays were under threat.

Samad said despite claims of a growing threat against the community, the country's leadership has remained in the hands of Malays and is still led by a party which claims to represent the Malay community.

The well-respected writer, who is fondly known as Pak Samad, said it was peculiar that allegations of Malays being under threat are constantly played up.

"I hope the Malay community is not too obsessed about claims that Malays are under threat.

"How are Malays under threat? How can religion (Islam) and Malays be threatened when those in power have been Malay for over five decades?

"What have they (Malay leaders) been doing for five decades (if Malays can be under threat)?" he said.

In an apparent reference to Umno, Samad said if the country’s more than five-decade-old Malay leadership cannot put the Malay community at ease, then it should surrender power.

"Let other Malays (rule). They (Umno) have been there for five decades, not one decade," he told Malaysiakini in an interview.

Dark future

Yesterday, Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek alluded that the Pakatan Rakyat Penang government was subtly discriminating Malays in the state.

He had accused the state government of hiding behind meritocracy policies to discriminate the Malay community.

"They don't say it outright - that this place is only for our race, and the Malays cannot come here.

"But they use certain approaches where, eventually, only one race will enjoy (the development) and this is a form of subtle racism," he was quoted as saying in Umno Online.

Umno supreme council member Ibrahim Abu Shah had also urged Malays to unite ahead of the next general election to ensure that the party remains relevant.

According to him, if Umno was defeated at the next general election, the future of Malays would be "dark and unfortunate". - mk
