Give sand get bridge, but we have been giving them water....

Lee Kuan Yew has expressed guarded optimism for future cooperation between Singapore and Malaysia, after four days of meetings with top leaders in Kuala Lumpur. He found members of the Malaysian Cabinet solidly behind Prime Minister Najib Razak's new policy of cooperation with Singapore.

Mr Lee impressed on the Malaysian leaders that such cooperation must be long-term and across the board as massive investments are involved.

The two iconic projects that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Datuk Seri Najib agreed to cooperate on when they met in Singapore last month, are the Iskandar Malaysia economic zone and a third bridge from Changi to Desaru in east Johor.

The final balance of outcomes must also be fair on both sides, MM Lee said.

For Singapore, it does not make sense to cooperate on the third bridge if Johor does not lift its ban on the export of sand to the Republic, which has been in place since 1997, he said.

'The third bridge from Changi, it's for technical discussions. It does not make sense to us if at the same time, they punish us by making us barge sand from Vietnam.

'It's no benefit to them; it's just to cause us extra losses. So if it is cooperation, it must be across the board and the final balance must be fair on both sides and not just in specific, selective areas.'

Najib thinks that building a third bridge on the eastern side of Johor is something worthwhile and Singapore is quite keen. According to Najib with the third bridge, Malaysia can develop the whole of eastern Johor up to Mersing and onwards to Desaru.

But,building this third bridge comes with a price, as Lee Kuan Yew put it, "you give us sand we will cooperate" And Najib must be a damn fool if he agrees.

Najib must play his card well not to be fooled by the Singaporeans, unless big Mama gives her blessing its another story to tell.

Johor provides 350 million gallons of water per day to Singapore at $0.007 per 1000 gallons, while Singapore has to resell a minimum 17 million gallons per day of treated water to Johor at $0.13 per 1000 gallons.

cheers.

Funny everybody talking about the third bridge without realizing the actual fact. No doubt Najib made the announcement but all this while it has been S'pore's desire to have that bridge but have been keeping it closely to their chest. The S'pore boyz (continuation of fourth floor)at Putra Jaya was responsible for advising Najib on this proposal.
If they want sand in exchange, well why not. We can sell them at our price and only for the purpose of using it to build the bridge.
Just wondering what's going to happen to the new CIQ and causeway? Najib should have driven to S'pore through the causeway and see for himself the inconvenience of the winding road instead of using the Second Link during his recent visit to S'pore.
