Bukit Antarabangsa landslide - 4 dead & thousands asked to evacuate.......

Search and rescue teams are trying to locate four people believed trapped in the rubble of two of 14 bungalows buried by a massive landslide in Bukit Antarabangsa early today.

Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said late this evening that the four were from bungalows 15 and 16 in Taman Bukit Mewah, one of the two housing estates affected by the landslide. The other is Taman Bukit Utama.

He said the fate of the four people was unknown as the landslide had shifted the two bungalows from their original sites.

Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said late this evening that the four were from bungalows 15 and 16 in Taman Bukit Mewah, one of the two housing estates affected by the landslide. The other is Taman Bukit Utama. He said the fate of the four people was unknown as the landslide had shifted the two bungalows from their original sites.

Khalid said the teams were using an excavator to move the rubble but the teams would ensure that the trapped people were unhurt in the search and rescue operation. Three people were killed in the landslide which occurred at about 4am when most of the residents were asleep.

Khalid said the search and rescue operation would go on round the clock unless it rained heavily and the ground conditions prove too dangerous for the search and rescue personnel. He said 14 SAR teams were involved and they were carving out two alternative routes to enable desperate residents on Bukit Antarabangsa to leave the area as the main road has been cut off.

Between 3,000 and 5,000 residents, mainly living in apartments in the vicinity of the landslide area, have been asked to evacuate for their safety as the ground was unstable. Helicopters were used earlier to evacuate the infirm and elderly.

"Residents instructed to leave the area will be accommodated at Sekolah Kebangsaan Hulu Klang. They will be allowed to return to their homes after the Public Works Institute of Malaysia (Ikram) confirms that the area is safe," he said.

Khalid said the ground was still unstable and earth movements were detected when any digging was done. The landslide area covers four hectares.

The sultan of Selangor, prime minister and deputy prime minister and the Selangor mentri besar visited the site to see the situation on the ground earlier in the day. Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi instructed that construction atop Bukit Antarabangsa be stopped immediately. Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who was accompanied by wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, announced that all hillslope development in Selangor is prohibited.

Kuala Lumpur Hospital Public Relations Officer Zaiton Abu Bakar said 14 people had been given outpatient treatment at the hospital for injuries sustained during the landslide. The injured were administered first aid at the Addinniah surau at Bukit Antarabangsa before being sent to the nearest hospitals in ambulances, at least 12 of which were seen at the scene.

Eight of the 14 affected bungalows were in Taman Bukit Utama and the other six in Taman Bukit Mewah, according to a spokesman of the Fire and Rescue Unit at the scene. One of the affected bungalows is owned by Datuk Mohamed Thajudeen Abdul Wahab, the principal private secretary to the prime minister. Mohamed Thajudeen and his family are safe. They had spent the night at Mohamed Thajudeen's mother's home in the city.

According to the Fire & Rescue Unit, the landslide was caused by underground water movement. A search and rescue operation has been mounted involving personnel from the military, Civil Defence Department, Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue (Smart) team, Fire & Rescue Unit and Ampang Jaya Municipal Council.

Bukit Antarabangsa State Assemblyman Azmin Ali said at the scene that earth movement continued to take place and that electricity supply to several housing estates in Bukit Antarabangsa was disrupted. Power was restored to some areas tonight.

KT by-election - nomination on Jan.06,09 & polling on Jan.17, 09......

Nominations for the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election will be held on Jan 6 next year and polling on Jan 17, in the event of a contest.

Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar, in announcing this after the EC meeting today, said the respective writs and notices would be issued on Sunday and Dec 21.

He said the dates were fixed after taking into account various factors, including the weather forecast from the Meteorological Department which said that Terengganu would be experiencing certain weather conditions in the near term.

"The EC has 60 days to hold the by-election, so there is no reason to rush it after taking into account the weather and year-end factors and the manpower needs because 70% of the election worker comprise teachers who are having their year-end school holidays.

"Jan 17 is the most suitable date because it gives all parties concerned ample opportunity to prepare, especially the contesting parties in the selection of their candidates," he told reporters at the EC office here.

The Kuala Terengganu seat fell vacant following the death of the incumbent, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Razali Ismail, while playing badminton at Institute Aminuddin Baki in Genting Highlands last Friday.

Wan Ahmad said the electoral roll which was verified yesterday and gazetted today would be used for the by-election. The electoral roll contained 80,229 registered voters, comprising 79,194 ordinary voters and 1,035 postal voters.

He said there would be 36 polling centres, 143 polling streams and 877 workers.

The meeting also agreed to set up two election campaign enforcement teams to monitor the campaigning, each headed by an enforcement officer and would comprise representatives of the candidates, the local authorities and police officers with the rank of inspector and above.

Covering an area of 60,528.1ha, the Kuala Terengganu constituency is one of eight parliamentary constituencies in Terengganu and is regarded as important because it houses the state and federal administrative centres and is the seat of the state capital, Kuala Terengganu, which gained city status on Jan 1 this year.

The rapid development of the place is reflected in the construction of structures like the Sultan Mahmud International Airport, Gong Badak Sports Complex and the Universiti Darul Iman (UDM)and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT)campuses.

The staging of the annual Monsoon Cup yachting race in Pulau Duyong since 2005 had helped put Kuala Terengganu on the world sporting and tourism map while the Islamic Civilisation Park is fast becoming a tourist attraction.

Razali won the seat from PAS in the 2004 general election, polling 30,994 votes against 20,061 votes by Dr Syed Azman Syed Nawawi of PAS for a 1933-vote majority.

He retained the seat with a 628-vote majority in the March 8 general election, polling 32,562 votes against PAS vice-president Mohamad Sabu (31,934). An independent candidate, Maimun Yusof, 89, polled 685 votes and lost her deposit.

The constituency has 80,325 voters -- 87.4 per cent Malays, Chinese (11.6 per cent), India (0.7 per cent) and others (0.3 per cent) -- and four state constituencies comprising Wakaf Mempelam, Ladang , Batu Buruk which is held by PAS and Bandar.

Klip video Lingam: Sandiwara Nazri, Jabatan Peguam Negara, BPR & Polis.........

Jabatan Peguam Negara telah mengarahkan Badan Pencegah Rasuah (BPR) dan polis menjalankan siasatan terhadap hasil laporan Suruhanjaya Diraja mengenai klip video V.K Lingam, kata Menteri di Jabatan Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz.Nazri berkata BPR sudah menjalankan siasatan lanjut terhadap beberapa individu seperti disyorkan suruhanjaya itu daripada aspek kesalahan rasuah dan penyalahgunaan kuasa.

"Siasatan BPR tertumpu kepada dua perkara iaitu percutian Tun Eusoff Chin (bekas Ketua Hakim Negara ketika itu) di New Zealand bersama V.K Lingam (peguam)dan perkara berhubung pelantikan hakim.

"Siasatan mengenai percutian itu sudah selesai dan kertas siasatan sudah dihantar ke Jabatan Peguam Negara untuk kajian dan keputusan," katanya dalam jawapan bertulis kepada Wee Choo Keong (PKR-Wangsa Maju).

Wee ingin tahu sehingga 17 Ogos lalu, apakah tindakan yang sudah diambil oleh Pejabat Peguam Negara dan BPR terhadap cadangan Suruhanjaya Siasatan Diraja mengenai klip video V.K Lingam. Beliau berkata BPR telah selesai menjalankan siasatan berhubung pelantikan hakim dan kertas siasatan itu sedang diteliti oleh Peguam Kanan Persekutuan BPR.

Nampaknya masih tindakan terhadap mereka yang terlibat dalam isu klip video Lingam yang mendedahkan bagaimana seorang peguam boleh menentukan perlantikan seseorang hakim yang begitu hangat diperkatakan pada tahun lalu. Apakah dengan secara diam-diam isu klip video ini hendak ditutup begitu saja? Mungkin kerana mereka yang terlibat adalah orang-orang kenamaan dari UMNO diantaranya Dr.Mahathir Mohamad,Tengku Adnan serta beberapa orang kroni yang berjaya mempengaruhi sistem perundangan kita. Bacalah komen berikut........

Maka video Corect, Correct, Correct ini akan terus disiasat. Tapi pelakon utamanya iaitu Mantan PM Mahathir langsung tidak disiasat atau didakwa. Bukankah semua kerja hina ini ada kaitan dengan beliau?. Bahkan namanya juga banyak kali disebut. Termasuk juga Tengku Adnan yang kini menjadi orang kanan UMNO.

Rakyat sudah boleh melihat bahawa Jabatan Peguam Negara dan BPR sebenarnya sedang mengatur strategi untuk menggagalkan kes ini. Sebab itulah mereka "persetankan" segala maklumat yang diterima. Jika berani, terus panggil semua yang disebut dan nama-nama yang telah didedahkan sebelum ini. Apa tunggu lagi?.

Jika kes melibatkan pemimpin pembangkang, berlari puak-puak Jabatan Peguam Negera, Polis dan BPR melakukan siasatan dan menangkap pemimpin pembangkang macam "penjenayah". Tapi bila terkena atas batang hidung sendiri, bukan main lagi ditangguh-tangguh, samalah juga dengan menteri bertanggungjawab iaitu Nazri Aziz.

Kalau dah dasar kaki penipu di Parlimen, maka satu dunia akan ditipu. Tapi rakyat melihat dan harus sedar semua ini. Lama kelamaan, jika kes ini terus diperap begitu sahaja, suspek yang tertuduh terutamanya Mahathir akan terlepas dari hukumannya, tambahan pula jika TPM Najib Razak mengambil alih tampuk pemerintahan negara tidak lama lagi.

Inilah trick yang sedang mereka mainkan sebenarnya. Semua ini bagi mengelirukan rakyat dan akhirnya semua yang tertuduh pasti akan terlepas daripada sebarang hukuman.

The lesson we learned from Zaid's sacking..........

The sacking of former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim from Umno should serve as a lesson for other leaders in the party, Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said today.

He said party members and leaders should understand the party’s struggle and not resort to actions deemed to be extreme.

“If the council did not act, it would be seen as being toothless because the demeanour (of Zaid) was actionable,” he said when asked to comment on Zaid’s sacking from Umno.

Zaid was sacked from Umno yesterday for several actions which went contrary to the party principles, including attending opposition meetings and having talks with opposition leaders.

In Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said Zaid’s actions of late did not reflect the qualities of an Umno leader genuinely championing the party’s cause.

“I feel there is no place in Umno for anyone who plays the double-crossing game. Our struggle must be clear even if we have differing views on any issue,” he said.

Rais Yatim has answered your grouse as to why Zaid Ibrahim was sacked from UMNO. To put it bluntly, as an UMNO member you must always keep your mouth shut though you may think what the leaders are doing is wrong.

The UMNO leaders are alway right, even though they might stashed away millions of ringgit,like what the minister "who speak no Inglish" did, not too long ago. They are always immune to our laws. To UMNO attending opposition meetings is "haram" and practising corruption is "halal"

In UMNO you must always follow the leaders blindly. In other words you are a "YES" man or a "lembu pawah" that can be pulled along by the nose as the master wishes. No wonder intellects like Rais and a few others, once in UMNO becomes "dungus".

Yet UMNO's president wants UMNO members and the rakyat to work with him and speak the truth.......

Zaid Ibrahim booted out................

Former de facto Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim was sacked from Umno late last night for breaking the party's code of ethics.

Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi who chaired the party supreme council meeting that lasted more than three hours said Zaid's attendance at opposition events was inappropriate.

"It is against the party's code of ethics," said Abdullah when asked to elaborate on Zaid's sacking.

The former Kota Bahru MP had attended a DAP victory dinner in Penang and PKR’s annual national congress last weekend.

When asked whether Zaid wanted to be sacked from the party by attending the events, Abdullah said it was just a perception.

"Let it be interpreted that way, but most importantly Umno has to be consistent. We cannot have double standards," said Abdullah adding that the decision cannot be appealed.

When met at the PKR congress, Zaid had told reporters that he did not expect to be sacked from the party.

Zaid had resigned from Abdullah’s Cabinet in protest against the use of the Internal Security Act (ISA) recently.

He had been appointed minister earlier this year and was tasked with bringing about reforms to the judiciary.

Since his resignation Pakatan Rakyat partides have been actively courting him to join them.

Mukhriz wants vernacular schools abolished............

Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said today the government should put an end to vernacular schools so that Chinese and Tamil schools can be streamlined into one "Malaysian education system," in remarks which are sure to spark controversy and stir up debate over race relations.

"We are one nation but we have so many systems. There is a need to induce unity," he told reporters today.

In a press conference in Parliament, the Jerlun MP said that all schools should teach subjects in Bahasa Malaysia except for language subjects which should be thought in their own languages.Additionally, it should be compulsory for Chinese and Indians to learn their mother tongue while other races including Malays can take up these languages optionally, he said.

He said the proposal to have only national schools could help address the problem of non-Malays misunderstanding the concept of "Ketuanan Melayu," or Malay Supremacy, which has become a source of tension between Malays and non-Malays. Mukhriz argued that such misunderstandings were a result of a lack of national unity, which he blamed on the existence of vernacular shools.

The son of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, who is running for the post of Umno Youth chief in the March party polls, was speaking to reporters on the roiling debate over the concept of Ketuanan Melayu and asked component leaders not to exaggerate the meaning of the phrase.

Deputy MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said last week that he accepted Malay leadership but not Malay supremacy. Saying that the term "ketuanan" was interpreted differently by different communities, Mukhriz said that it was not a term used to denote a relationship of "master and slave," as suggested by Dr Chua.

"I do not feel like a Tuan," he quipped.

He said a single school system would help check racial polarisation.

"Of course pupils should have the option to study their mother tongues. With a single system, Malays will also have the option of studying other languages like Mandarin and Tamil and this will boost unity," he said.

Mukhriz said most countries practiced a single school system and as such it was time to do away with the vernacular school system. The Umno Youth chief candidate said he hoped other Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders would not react negatively to his suggestion.

"If they reject this suggestion, then they should say why they are against it.

"How can they talk about unity and question Malay rights, while they still insist on having a different school system for their race?

"If you want equal rights then you cannot have a different school system. You cannot have your cake and eat it too," he said.

Mukhriz added that if non-Malays continue making statements about Malay supremacy, they should not be surpirsed if the Malays started talking about the economic supremacy of the non-Malays.

"Malays do not feel in any way superior or the master when it comes to the country's economy," he said.

His remarks appear designed to tap the support of the Umno grassroots but is likely to add fuel to the debate on race relations.

And Ong Tee Keat has wasted no time in condemning Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir's suggestion to abolish vernacular schools.

"Mukhriz is just one of the many who are now repeating the same polemics that are a few decades old, simply because of the advent of their party's poll," the Transport Minister said.

"It is saddening because politicians cannot think out of the box," he wrote in a blog posting.

What if Azmin Ali or Hadi Awang or RPK had made remarks on abolishing vernacular schools? The next thing you know,they will be ISAed to Kamunting. Mukhriz is from UMNO and anything from UMNO its OK................

As far as I am concern I dont give a damn about the whole issue, let UMNO fight with its component parties and see them die a slow death. The education system is so polluted with political matters and that everyone wants to be the champion of their own race especially when party election is around the corner.

I am so pissd off with our UPSR,PMR and SPM results. Do these results really reflect student performance or are the results being manipulated to please the political masters? No wonder a great number of our "pak menteri" are sending their children overseas for education. What does it tell you....your guess is as good as mine.........

916 - Anwar refuse to concede defeat...........

Anwar Ibrahim has refused to concede defeat months after missing a deadline to seize power but admitted his plan to sign up defecting lawmakers had been a "headache".

After March general elections that saw the opposition alliance gain stunning victories, Anwar said he would topple the government by Sept 16. But that deadline came and went and the promised mass defections from the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition never materialised.

His momentum stalled in October when Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi agreed to stand down next March, defusing public anger at the government's handling of the economy and failure to introduce promised reforms. But Anwar was defiant at the annual congress of his PKR party, held over the weekend, urging his supporters to continue to campaign against the BN, which has ruled Malaysia for half a century.

"Despite September 16... I am still very confident that we will form the next government," he said to thunderous applause from a crowd of more than 10,000 late Saturday.

"When (will we take over)? Wait. Until then, shake the foundations," he said.

"Take it from me, not as Anwar but a representative of the conscience of this party and struggle, we are with you heart and soul, we will fight, we will struggle, we will never surrender."

Anwar, who needs to win the support of 30 government lawmakers to take control of the 222-seat parliament, said that although he had strong support, he had been blocked from challenging the administration.

"It is not easy to explain why we couldn't form the government as there are some matters that I still cannot talk about," he said.

"We wanted to take over power legally and follow the constitution and we wrote a letter to Abdullah to say so but he refused to meet with us," he added.

"We even sought a no-confidence motion in parliament but we were denied even this."

Let down by potential defectors

The former deputy premier admitted he was let down by MPs sympathetic to his cause who were reluctant to show their hand and others who were intimidated into staying on the government benches.

"When I asked them why, they said they had to because they were suspected of being the ones who would cross over, so sometimes this gives me a headache," he said.

Anwar announced plans to target Sarawak, where many of the reputed defectors hail from, and which is expected to hold state elections some time next year.

"I want all PKR MPs to line up to go down to Sarawak and I want all of them to go without exception," he said. "There is a big change coming there."

Anwar is seizing on public anger with the government in Sarawak and neighbouring Sabah, which are rich in petroleum, gas and timber but relatively undeveloped and impoverished compared to Peninsular Malaysia.

"A lot of people tell me they can't wait for us to take power," he said. "They ask me when I want to take control of (Malaysia) and I want to say yesterday."
