Landslide: 16 dead, nine survivors...

The death toll at the Al-Taqwa orphanage in Hulu Langat, Selangor has reached 16, with nine survivors.

The victims were inside a tent in the orphanage compound when the landslide struck at 2.30pm yesterday.

Of the nine survivors, two are currently in intensive care while one is undergoing surgery.
Six others have been moved to a normal ward, said a customer service officer at the Ampang Hospital, reported Bernama in a 10.49am dispatch.

The officer said the six patients had been placed in a disaster ward set up following the tragedy. Reporters were not allowed to meet them.

"The priority of the hospital is to administer treatment to the patients. We have to ensure that they remain calm," said the officer.

Following the incident, rescuers toiled for about 15 hours from 2.45pm onwards.

The 25 people were trapped in the rubble when earth from a slope crashed into their tent where they were doing a nasyid rehearsal before their performance for a National Film Development Board entourage's visit at 5pm.

Meanwhile, relatives and friends were seen crowding the Forensic Department of the Kuala Lumpur Hospital where the 16 bodies had been brought for the post mortem.

Some among them shed tears as they watched the morning news over television on the incident.
