PKR - Police have political motives in sex video probe...

PKR accused the police of having political motives in their investigation into the sex video which allegedly featured Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Berita Harian reported yesterday that a South Korean broadcasting agency was engaged by the Malaysian police to determine the identity of the man in the sex video. The Umno-owned daily had quoted federal police sources as saying that “visual analysis and video technical results” had matched Anwar with the man in the video.

Why are the police doing this when they have previously stated that the purpose of investigation is to find out the people responsible for screening the video? They are assuming the person in the video is Anwar. Why is that? Why not widen your search? Clear politically-charged motives on the part of the police,” PKR vice-president Chua Tian Chang told The Malaysian Insider.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution (picture) argued that the findings of the South Korean firm was based on information given by the police alone and hence was not credible.

“It should also be noted that the South Korean firm was engaged by and fed with information by the Polis DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM), whose leadership and their political masters have had a longstanding political agenda to smear the reputation of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and end his political struggle for reform,” said Saifuddin in a statement today.

Anwar has maintained that he is not the man in the video.

Saifuddin accused Berita Harian of “sensationalising” the matter with its news report yesterday. The PKR leader charged that the credibility of the police had been further “shattered” with the revelations made by former KL CID chief Datuk Mat Zain Ibrahim.

In an open letter to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar last week, Mat Zain said he had investigated the first sex video scandal 12 years ago and suspected it was linked to the latest video. He called for an investigation to uncover any similarities between the two cases, alleging there could be a possibility that the trio behind the latest scandal had played a role in the first video.

Are the trio involved or played any role in the production or distribution of Sex Video I in 1999, seeing as they have been identified as having a relationship with Anwar?

"More so (former Malacca Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul) Rahim (Thamby Chik) who is believed to have cause for revenge as Anwar had accused the former Umno Youth chief of corruption just three months before Sex Video I was made public on November 24 and 25, 1999,” Mat Zain wrote in the letter.

He was referring to the “Datuk T” trio behind the latest video, namely Rahim, Perkasa treasurer-general Datuk Shuib Lazim and businessman Datuk Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, who took responsibility for the 21-minute recording, stating that their aim was to “show that a man who wants to be prime minister is not qualified.”

The mysterious “Datuk T” had first screened the video purportedly showing the opposition leader having sex with a Chinese prostitute on March 21.

“Regarding the four police reports made by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim between July 9, 1999 and August 20, 1999 on the abuse of power and the obstruction of legal procedures by a retinue of major public figures including Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail... why has there been no further action on these police reports?” asked Saifuddin.

Meanwhile, Malaysiakini reports PAS will only weigh opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's position in Pakatan Rakyat after the police have completed their investigations into the Carcosa sex video, says its secretary-general Mustafa Ali. He said it was premature for PAS to weigh the matter as speculation on the sex video is still rife.

"PAS will not be drawn into making a decision now as it is premature. Let us wait until the police investigation is complete or the court has decided. It is not worthwhile for us to jump to conclusions," he said, adding that it was also premature to say if the person in the video is opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

“What if it is not... If it is proven to be Anwar we will state our stand,” he said.

Asked whether PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang or its spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat would compel Anwar to swear on the Quran as suggested by former Perlis mufti Dr Asri Zainul Abidin to clear himself, Mustafa questioned such a necessity. "In Islam, there are certain provisions on when this can be done. We have to first look at the witnesses, the trio Datuk T.

"If we look at their characters, can they actually be classified as being proper witnesses (in accordance with Islam)?" he joked, adding that he did not want to make any allegations but let the people judge their characters.

In Islam, in such cases four credible witnesses have to be produced to verify the claims.

Mustafa said Muslims have to understand the strict conditions under which such swearing on the Quran should take place, and not fool around with the religion as they like.

“There are certain conditions which have to be met. Please be serious over such matters as it concerns the sanctity of Islam,” he warned.

Mustafa also pointed out that under the country's laws it is the Datuk T trio who could be charged with showing such obscene material.

“Under our laws the three could be charged and sentenced. As to the person in the video it involves a morality issue if the person is said to be Anwar. The person did not violate any laws but possibly syariah law (if he is a Muslim ie having extramarital sex).”

“If the government decides to charge the person according to Syariah law, we will state our stand,” he said. The sex-tape was shown to several journalists on March 21 at the Carcosa Seri Negara hotel.
