2 million Muslims stone 'devil' at hajj, feast begins...

Two million Muslims ritually stoned the devil Saturday in the last major ritual of this year's hajj in Saudi Arabia, while fellow believers around the world celebrated Eid al-Adha, the feast of sacrifice.

The stoning took place in Mina, about five kilometres (three miles) east of the Grand Mosque in the holy city of Mecca.

Pilgrims had moved to Mina overnight Friday on foot, motorbikes, and buses from Mount Arafat after the hajj reached its zenith with a day of prayer, as well as tears by pilgrims moved by the sanctity of the spot where Prophet Mohammed is believed to have given his final sermon 14 centuries ago.

In the stoning ritual, pilgrims throw pebbles, which they collected at Muzdalifah on the way to Mina, at walls to emulate Abraham who is said to have stoned the devil at three locations when he tried to dissuade Abraham from God's order to sacrifice his son.

In conjunction with the stoning, pilgrims offer sacrifices by slaughtering a sheep, whose meat goes to the needy.

Nowadays pilgrims do not carry out this rite themselves, but pay agencies which distribute the meat to Muslims in many countries.

A total of about 1.5 billion Muslims around the world were celebrating Eid al-Adha with sacrifices of sheep, goats and other animals.

Like the stoning, this derives from the story of Abraham who was prepared to fulfil God's command to sacrifice his own son.

This year's hajj attracted just over two million believers including almost 1.4 million from abroad, according to statistics published by the official Saudi Press Agency.

The balance of almost 700,000 came from within the kingdom.

These numbers are roughly the same as last year.

The hajj has drawn a cross-section of humanity, everyone from presidents -- Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir was among them -- to commoners including a wounded Syrian rebel war veteran, as well as rich and poor pilgrims alike.

The hajj, which officially ends on Tuesday, is the world's largest Muslim gathering.

It is one of the five pillars of Islam that every capable Muslim must perform at least once, the high-point of his or her spiritual life. – AFP

PM risks being booted out, like Pak Lah....

The prime minister has to keep BN’s election promise not to increase the price of fuel, or risk suffering the same fate as former leaders.

Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) today reminded the Najib administration how former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was removed from office after he failed to deliver on his promises.

Its vice president Koh Swe Yong said Abdullah (right) disregarded the rakyat’s hardship, implemented neo-liberal economic policies, reduced subsidies, and raised the price of fuel drastically until the price of goods soared.

“He did all these until he was thrown out by the people in the 2008 general election,” Koh said.

He added that BN’s landslide victory in the 2004 general election – winning 198 out of the 220 parliamentary seats – rode on the trust given by the rakyat to Pak Lah for his reform agenda.

“However, after the general election, he did not bring about the promised changes,” Koh said in a statement today.

Favouring the rich

Reminding the BN government that it had promised in the last general election that it will not push up  the price of fuel should it return to power, Koh questioned the government’s decision in excluding RON 97 from the price hike.

“RON 97, as we know, is used by the rich who own big cars while RON 95 is used by the middle-income earners,” he said.

The price of RON 95 and diesel went up by 20 sen on Oct 2. They are now priced at RM2.30 and RM2.20 per litre respectively.

Meanwhile, Koh said that for the sake of the country’s future, the government should walk the talk of its ‘people first, performance now’ slogan.

“Stop implementing neo-liberalism economic policies and start practising good governance.

“If they say that winning the Telok Intan and Pengkalan Kubor by-elections showed how policies which burden the rakyat, such as the fuel hike, is accepted by the people, then in the next general election, they will feel the wrath of both the rural and urban voters,” he added. - mk
