Usaha perbincangan UMNO/BN-PR gagal...

Bagaimanapun, kata The Edge Review, rundingan berpanjangan Najib ini tidaklah sia-sia.

Perdana menteri sentiasa saja meniupkan berita perbincangan setiap kali berlakunya krisis kepimpinan, termasuk ketika kemungkinan kepimpinan beliau tercabar misalnya menjelang pembentangan Bajet 2014 Oktober lalu.

Unity talks fail, Najib faces possible revolt, says report...

The ongoing unity government talks between Umno and the opposition coalition have failed after eight months of negotiations, leaving Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak (pic) vulnerable to challenges from his opponents within his own ruling party, said The Edge Review.

The online newsweekly said in the article “When talk fails” that Najib failed last week to get Umno’s top policy-making body to sanction the planned unity government with the opposition coalition headed by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“The talks… have been cunningly used by Najib to fend off challenges from his opponents within his own ruling party, the United Malays National Organisation (Umno),” the report said.

“The talks are going nowhere and the general feeling in the opposition is that Umno hasn’t been sincere,” a close confidant of Anwar, who was involved in the secret unity government negotiations, reportedly told the newsweekly.

Najib had used the excuse of talks to form a unity government following the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional’s (BN) poor showing at the general election last year.

Malaysians showed up in record numbers to hand the popular vote to the Pakatan Rakyat (PR), sending a signal that the public was fed up with the way BN handled the country’s affairs.

Issues that bug Malaysians are the widespread corruption within the public sector, from low-ranking officers to politicians.

The unity government talks, led by Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on the government’s side, had approached top opposition leaders that included leaders from PAS.

However, certain parties within Umno were not pleased with the news and had stepped up attacks against Najib, reported the newsweekly.

It also noted that the intensifying criticisms hurled at the prime minister had largely gone undefended by his cabinet ministers.

“There is little doubt he is at his weakest politically and much of the crisis he is facing is his own doing,” a senior businessman close to Najib reportedly told The Edge Review.

By pandering to both the opposition coalition and party hardliners within Umno, the newsweekly called Najib’s decision a “high-risk strategy to deal with the crisis” in leadership.

But after eight months of going back and forth, the opposition had finally gotten tired of Najib’s talks for a unity government.

“On hindsight, it was a mistake. Anwar’s side walked into the talks confident that in a unity government they could drive the reform agenda,” the newsweekly quoted an opposition politician as saying.

Najib’s prolonged talks were not in vain though, noted The Edge Review. The prime minister had revived news of the talks whenever his leadership landed in crisis, including the time when his Umno presidency could be challenged and also just before the unveiling of Budget 2014 last October.

The newsweekly, however, said that Najib’s tactics were not going to work anymore. Noting the lack of support for Najib from his own government and the growing dislike among the public towards his leadership, The Edge Review said that the reversal of promises made by BN pre-election and poor management have caused Najib to lose the advantage.

The article also quoted Ibrahim Suffian, director of opinion research outfit Merdeka Center, as saying: “At the moment he seems paralysed by inaction over a whole slew of issues. He ought to take heart that he did win the general election and the party leadership. He needs to fulfil that mandate.”

The Edge Review quoted Ibrahim as proposing that Najib consider taking the lead to explain to Malaysians the country’s financial situation and solutions needed to fix the economy. He said Najib should also lead by example by cutting salaries of those in cabinet, including his own.

Above all, the newsweekly said that Najib needed to bring back his own agenda of moderation.

“He needs to show courage to contest these forces even if it is headed by a former PM. He needs to show leadership and not just be seen just as another politician,’ The Edge Review said.
