Najib trims ministerial entertainment allowances...

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will reduce the entertainment allowance of ministers, deputy ministers and top government officers by 10 percent.

According to Bernama, Najib said this policy is among 11 new measures that are to be introduced to reduce public sector expenditure.

The new policy will be implemented on Jan 1, 2014.

Other measures include:
  • Limiting civil servants below the grade of Jusa C to economy class on domestic flights;

  • Reducing electricity cost for all government premises by five percent;

  • Freezing fresh applications for renovation of government offices;

  • Tightening the appointment procedure for government consultants;

  • Cutting down on the use of event management companies and the giving of door gifts and souvenirs;

  • Cutting down on food and beverages, buntings and banners at government functions; and

  • Utilising the 1Malaysia Training Centre (1MTC) for training sessions and seminars.
These austerity measures were announced just a day before tomorrow's scheduled demonstration at Dataran Merdeka against government policies that have led to a recent rise in prices of essential goods.

Najib's Facebook page has also been recently inundated with messages condemning his government for failing to keep a lid on inflation and its expenditures.

Following Pak Lah's playbook?

It is believed that this is Najib's first ever austerity drive, but it appears reminiscent of measures announced by his predecessor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in June 2008.

In fact, many of these measures such as trimming ministerial entertainment allowances, freezing of renovation work for government buildings, limiting travel perks for civil servants and limiting government functions to government facilities were announced by Abdullah before.

These measures - intended to reduce government expenditure by RM2 billion - were introduced after the Abdullah administration raised fuel prices shortly after the 12th general election.

Abdullah's austerity drive did not do much to save his career. He was ousted in a complicated succession plan and replaced by Najib.

As for Najib, he had raised fuel and sugar prices immediately after the 13th general election, which has led to a spiraling inflationary effect.

Next year, the costs of more essential goods and services - among others, highway toll charges, electricity and public transport fares - are scheduled to go up.

Currently, several civil society groups and opposition parties are planning a drawn-out campaign against the government's subsidy removal policies, culminating in the protest against the goods and services tax (GST), scheduled for May 1.

However, the government's response is that its opponents are moving to hold a Arab Spring-type of demonstration tomorrow, which is aimed at creating chaos to topple BN in Putrajaya.

However, critics have pointed out that there has been no concrete proof of this and have accused the federal government of trying to create a diversion from public anger over the rising cost of living.-malaysiakini

Rafizi anjur pertandingan emel palsu, hadiah RM1,000

Najib perlu jelas kondo RM110 juta milik anak tirinya...

Police barking up wrong tree, says Rafizi...

The police are barking up the wrong tree for refusing to cross him out as a bomb threat, PKR’s Rafizi Ramli said today.

As a counter-measure for what he yesterday dubbed as “a bad play”, the PKR director of strategy will not only pay for a fake email contest but also today made a police report against four pro-Umno blogsites for first publishing a malicious email.

The email, that Rafizi said was circulated among PKR leaders, talked of a bomb threat on New Year’s Eve and was taken seriously by the police, who hauled Rafizi up for questioning on the matter yesterday.

“I am capable of many things but certainly not bombs, which have escaped my skills,” Rafizi, the MP for Pandan, said.

“I am still officially under suspicion of planting bombs... the police have refused to rule me out as a suspect.”

Rafizi said he lodged a police report against the pro-Umno bloggers, The Unspinners, The Flying Kick, bidaman.blogspot.com, and badurakyat.blogspot.com to give them some real work.

These pro-Umno websites first published the alleged ‘bomb threat’ email, he said.

Also, Rafizi gave more details about a contest to hand out RM1,000 (from his own pocket) for the best fake email to be sent to the prime minister, home minister and inspector-general of police (IGP).

'Extremely dangerous to fabricate email'

He said this was meant to tell the police that if they try to fool the public, the public can also do the same.

Rafizi then went on to point out that it is an "extremely dangerous" matter for anybody to fabricate email that is intended to mislead the people and cause havoc.

But in the case of the email for which he was being hauled up for, he charged the police with acting with bias for not checking the veracity of the email before hauling him up.

"It doesn't take a genius to figure out which email is genuine and which is a threat," Rafizi said. "It is not about public safety but they were creating the perception of a bomb plot."

At the Dang Wangi district police headquarters yesterday, he said, PKR lawyer and MP N Surendran pressed the police to state whether he was being called up as a witness or as a suspect, but the investigators refused to rule on that.

He admitted that his police reports against the four pro-Umno blogs was his test to see if the police would now do their leg work without "double standards". And as a MP, he would also kick up a fuss in Parliament on shoddy police work.

"You mark my words, I can be quite crazy," Rafizi said.

"Until and unless these four bloggers are called up for questioning and actions are taken against them and they are charged in court... I will spend every hour during the Question Time in Parliament after this matter."

Elaborating on his "fake email" contest, Rafizi said it would last for a week from today until Jan 6.2014.

The winning email, which will be judged on humour and its grounding in current affairs, will be announced on Jan 10.

The email, he added, should be addressed to: najib@pmo.gov.my;
ahmadzahid@moha.gov.my and abkhalid@rmp.gov.my, with CCs to pertandinganemail@gmail.com

The emails sent will also be published at http://emailpalsu.blogspot.com - malaysiakini

Disclose funds and clear your name, Rosmah's son told...

For sake of public interest, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's stepson should disclose the angel financiers behind his rise in Hollywood and how he is able to afford a RM110 million New York penthouse, PKR says.

Doing his own calculation based on his similar working experience, Rafizi Ramli said it was illogical for Rosmah Mansur's son Riza Shahriz Abdul Aziz to afford a RM110 million penthouse in New York, and more so, bankroll a major Hollywood movie.

"Therefore, we want to know who his very generous investors are," Rafizi, who is PKR’s director strategy and the MP for Pandan, told reporters at the party headquarters in Tropicana, Petaling Jaya, today.

"Knowing where the money comes from can (help clear) the public suspicion that the money comes from the family."

Rafizi noted that based on the news article filed by Sarawak Report, even the manner in which Riza's company, Red Granite, financed the Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ as "unconventional".

It was a concern to many Malaysians as people cannot otherwise comprehend how the families of public officials could live beyond their means, while they struggle with price hikes of basic goods.

The 36-year-old son of Rosmah from her earlier marriage is reported to have bought the seven-bedroom property on Nov 19 last year at 63rd Street in Park Laurel, New York

“His age is about the same as mine. I, too, have a condo but a cheaper condo,” Rafizi said, to laughter in the room.

'Savings may amount to RM150,000 a year'

Giving the standard estimate that an investment banker may earn up to £100,000 a year, Rafizi said that after taxes and expenses, Riza’s savings may amount to a maximum of RM150,000 a year, even if he was a prudent saver.

Over eight years, he may have saved up a million ringgit, Rafizi said. The cost of the New York penthouse is therefore 100 times over.

Riza, according to Sarawak Report, began a banking career after graduating from the London School of Economics in 2000.

The report said Riza had worked with consultancy firm KPMG until 2002 and later at HSBC London until the financial crash of 2008.

“Riza claims they have backing of very supportive financiers from the Middle East and Asia. If they have nothing to hide, then they should really disclose who these financiers are,” he said.- malaysiakini

Ada atau tak ada bom, molotov cocktail dan rocket launcher, protes rakyat is on...

PDRM Atau Sesiapa Jangan Alih Isu Kenaikan Kos Sara Hidup, Protes Rakyat Ambang Tahun Baru Diteruskan!

SAMM menjelaskan dengan tegas beberapa perkara adalah seperti berikut;

Sekian,

Che'GuBard
Pengasas
Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM)

Police become 'wedge' against the people, again...

I have just submitted my responses to the Malaysiakini’s ‘newsmakers of the year’ poll and note the absence of the police on the list.

That they have kept themselves out of the news to be considered newsmakers must now end with the glaring Malaysiakini front page report 'Dec 31 rally organisers to bring grenades, claim cops'.

If, according to the report, there is police intelligence of protestors "bringing various weapons, including grenades and gas masks to stir up a commotion", why don't the police act and simply arrest those people and show proof of the grenades?

You don't need to be a genius to figure the police are once more being unfairly used as a wedge against the people and that they had gotten carried away with the 'fairy tale' as DAP's Lim Kit Siang (right) has stated in the report 'Plan to topple gov't a fairy tale, says Kit Siang'.

Why would anyone in his right mind bring grenades to a peaceful protest against price hikes? If anyone causes trouble, it would more likely be the agents provocateur, those professional thugs that have hijacked democratic and otherwise peaceful events in the past.

And if anyone wants to bring gas masks to a peaceful demonstration they are being prepared because the police have a track record of using tear gas on peaceful demonstrators from the Bersih experience.

Surely bringing a gas mask to a demonstration is not a crime but using tear gas on peaceful demonstrators and making false allegations must be. The police often advise the public not to spread wild rumours but appear not to heed its own advice.

The police should be helping the organisers because they and their households too are consumers and can't be happy with the many price rises that affect many households and battlers. They should facilitate not hinder the planned event and others like it.

If Malaysian consumers don't have a common platform like a peaceful demonstration to voice their anger and unhappiness in a peaceful manner then how else can they protest?

How will anyone know they are not alone in their hardship?

And if citizens can't protest collectively in a democracy then they must live in a dictatorship and Malaysia should re-write its constitution.

Deeming Malays 'lazy' adding salt to injury

The police do their public image no good by being used in any way to unfairly stymie a very important democratic event by the people and for the people. Otherwise, the government will then say that silence means the people accept the price hikes.

The government should not be unfairly harassing or obstructing the people and the court has the good sense to deny the remand of those involved because they are decent Malaysians who are doing the right thing for everyone's benefit.

In fact Ralph Nader was an American consumer advocate and activist who in the 70's spearheaded civil protests by consumers against companies and government and those that exploited consumers.

As a result consumers today are now aware of their political clout and should boycott those that unfairly benefit from government price hikes.

When a government spends more and more and  expects the public to pay for their high maintenance with new taxes and price hikes, it is not unreasonable for people to want a cheaper government.

Why should you pay for the high cost of keeping a Rolls Royce to deliver your services when even a humble Proton can do the job?

A cheaper government will get my vote.

The advice given in 'Muslim group - Don't fight price hikes - work harder' is as ridiculous as they come.

The advice targeted at Malays that they should not stay at home and plant serai and go out and sell fried bananas and mineral water is adding insult to injury.

I would be very offended if I were a Malay for being typecast as lazy and time-wasting at work and being asked to be a street-side hawker. This is what impoverished people do in third-world countries and not the rich country the government promised.

Those consumer groups forgot to ask parents to send their kids out in the streets to hawk cigarettes to motorists at traffic lights.

I know of a Chinese company where 99 percent of its almost 100-odd office staff are Malays and they have their heads down at their desks and work hard until they leave at 5pm or later. They do not have two hours to spare to plant serai. Not every Malay worker marks time at work.

For consumer groups to make facetious statements and typecast the Malays instead of joining the chorus of protests against the unreasonable price hikes (in such a short span of time) are reasons why consumers are better off with those who represent them and not against them.

Corruption and waste are twin enemies

The strategy of using pseudo-groups by the government to be their public apologists is indeed a clever one but will fail because you can be too clever for your own good and Malaysians often see through the charade.

We see demonstrations against rising costs of living in many countries because governments have failed to exercise financial prudence.

Corruption and waste are the twin enemies of the people who have to bear the reckless costs of administering a country and woe to the country that fails to stop its corrupt and wasteful leaders.

There comes a time when it is not only right to protest but necessary. Not all who protest are unable to absorb the rises but feel it wrong that the poor should be further burdened.

You cannot read about the wealth of some politicians and the high life they live, and the astronomical costs of running the government without asking why PM Najib Abdul Razak has not shown any attempt at making government more efficient and accountable so the rises, their degree and range, may be reduced, or even avoided?

The opportunistic Dr Mahathir Mohamad suggested the government should cut costs but didn't suggest if running Putrajaya and allowing toll companies to get away with hefty profits and unreasonable increases is taking a toll on the people.

Price rises are everywhere but in Malaysia I suspect it is related to the high costs of running government including the incidental cost of corruption and waste.

You can't blame wages as in Australia because Malaysian wages are relatively low and foreign workers survive on subsistence wages that are further skimmed by those that obtain permits for them to work.

If it costs less to run the government I am sure prices will not rise as much or as fast and as extensively when there is double-dipping from a goods and services tax (GST), the mother of all price hikes and taxes.

If people don't protest then a fool and his money is quickly parted.- Steve Ho,Malaysiakini

Polis siasat Rafizi isu emel 'letupan'...

Chaos allegations a 'bad play' says Rafizi...

PKR strategies director Rafizi Ramli, who was questioned by the police over an email calling for chaos at the price hikes rally on December 31, calls it a "bad play".

Speaking to reporters at the police station this morning, he said he was shocked to receive a call from the police over alleged bombs planned for the rally.

"This matter isn't just a bad play (permainan buruk), but it sets a bad precedent.

"After this, if someone gets an email concerning (Prime Minister Najib Razak's wife) Rosmah Mansor, are they going question her?" he quipped.

Rafizi said what the police should do is investigate the blogger and Utusan Malaysia who are the ones spreading the purportedly fake email, before questioning the ones implicated without proof.

The Pandan MP also denied any knowledge of explosives.

"The only bomb that I know is kuih bom," he joked.

Earlier, Rafizi reported that he has been summoned to appear at Dang Wangi police station at 11.30am.

"I suspect the PDRM has called me in to give my statement in relation to the slander that the Umno blogs had started, that I am involved in planning to plant bombs in certain locations on December 31," he said in an email last night.

Police crime investigation director Hadi Ho Abdullah later issued a statement confirming that Rafizi is being questioned over an email allegedly sent to him from Abdul Rahim Ghouse, a close associate of PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Abdul Rahim was reported denying he had sent the offending email.

Hadi Ho: 1,151 police reports lodged

"PDRM views as serious the circulation of an email said to be sent by Rahim Ghouse to Rafizi Ramli concerning plans to detonate bombs at several strategic locations during New Year's Eve," said Hadi Ho.

He claimed the police have received 1,151 police reports nationwide objecting to the organising of the anti-hike rally "that threatens public order".

The said email was circulated on the Internet and reportedly published in full in Umno-owned daily Utusan's weekend edition Mingguan today.

The determination of civil society groups to hold a rally on New Year's Eve to protest a deluge of price hikes has provoked allegations of plans to topple the government.

Rafizi, who arrived at the Dangi Wangi district police headquarters with lawyers N Surendran and Latheefa Koya, was questioned for some 40 minutes.

Later, Rafizi told reporters he will be lodging a police report against Utusan and pro-Umno bloggers Papagomo and The Unspinners for circulating the email.

Rafizi also questioned police’s haste in arresting youths for voicing dissent on social media but is slow in hauling up the bloggers who circulated the bomb claim.

He further denied having any part in the email.

"I am not involved in this email and I didn't go through them," he said.

The determination of civil society groups to hold a rally on New Year's Eve to protest a deluge of price hikes has provoked allegations of plans to topple the government.

Yesterday Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Amar Singh Ishar Singh alleged that the protestors plan to use various weapons, including grenades, to spark unrest.

Such allegations are reminiscent of allegations of unrest and the use of weapons in 2011 during the massive Bersih 2.0 rally for clean and fair elections, when the police claimed to have found parangs and Molotov cocktails but those responsible have never been identified.

The rally, called by several NGOs, is a response to a growing number of price hikes following the slashing of sugar and fuel subsidies, and revisions of various taxes.

Affected have been petrol and sugar, and in 2014, electricity, transport fares and Kuala Lumpur's assessment rates among others, which is expected to have inflationary effects.

Meanwhile, Jingga 13 has called on KL deputy police chief Amar Singh Ishar Singh to withdraw the claim that the NGO is allegedly involved in a plot to cause unrest during an anti-price hike protest on New Year’s eve at Dataran Merdeka, or face legal action.

Jingga 13 deputy coordinator Amizudin Ahmat said such allegation was malicious, defamatory and nonsensical, aimed at diverting attention from the real issue, which is rising costs.

“Jingga 13 has never, at any time, released any statement or instruction to anyone, through whatever instrument, planning to cause any unrest, what more involving the use of weapons of bombs with the intention of toppling the government,” he said after lodging a police report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters today.

He was referring to a statement by Amar Singh yesterday alleging that protestors from four NGOs plan to use various weapons, including grenades, to spark unrest.

The four NGOs named were - Jingga 13, Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup (Turun), Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) and Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM).

Amizudin today further demanded that police produce evidence to back this claim.

He added that the organisation was also mooting filing a defamation suit against Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia and TV3 should Amar Singh not retract his claim.

“Jingga 13 stresses that these malicious accusations against us is slander intended to spoil our reputation and intimidate the rakyat with claims of chaos, weapons and hand grenades,” he said.

Meanwhile, SAMM has stated it will send a letter of demand to Amar on Monday.

Turun chief Azan Safar (left), who is the main mover of the anti-price hike protest on December 31, has accused the government of attempting to divert attention from bread and butter issues.

Azan has insisted that the protest is solely aimed at putting pressure on the government for increasing prices of electricity, sugar, fuel and other essential items.- malaysiakini

Email to Rafizi fake, says alleged sender...

Abdul Rahim Ghouse, the man who purportedly sent an email to PKR strategies director Rafizi Ramli over plans to set off "small explosions" on New Year's Eve, has denied being the author of the email.

"I deny it as that letter did not originate from me. Someone wrote that letter in my name.

"They (the original authors) have their own agenda, but they are trying to involve me instead," he was quoted as saying in a Mingguan Malaysia report today.

Abdul Rahim is described as an ally of Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.

He was referring to a copy of an email circulated among pro-Umno bloggers of an "Ops Turun" and a warning for "our guys" to avoid five locations in Kuala Lumpur where there would be "small explosions".

"There will be several minor expl. (explosion) similar to the previous event when Anwar dismissed form the sodomy charge. Please remind our guys on the code we use.

"When the time comes, they will act per discussed in our previous meeting. Take advantage on the big crowd during the New Year eve," the email titled 'C for Chaos' read.

The email added that social media teams will record the event and upload them on Youtube to blame the incidents on the government.

"If any of your team members get arrested before the main event, do not screw up. They will be compensated for that. Kudos to Azan Safar for this," it said.

Price hike rally ruffling feathers

The image of the email showed the sender as Ghouse and the recipient Rafizi, with a carbon copy to Tindak Malaysia chief Wong Piang Yow.

The bloggers claimed that copies of the email were being circulated on Facebook.

Azan is the leader of NGO Turun, which is organising an anti-price hike protest at Dataran Merdeka on New Year's Eve.

Police arrested Azan on Dec 23 for allegedly for attempting to carry out activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy, but was forced to release him after failing to obtain a remand.

Azan had stressed that the rally is solely to pressure the government over its recent hikes on fuel, electricity, sugar and other essentials.

Rafizi was today questioned at Dang Wangi police station over the alleged email.

The Pandan MP slammed the authorities for questioning the victim of the alleged scam instead of probing those circulating the email.

"After this, if someone gets an email concerning (Prime Minister Najib Razak's wife) Rosmah Mansor, are they going question her (Rosmah)?" he joked to the media at the station today.- malaysiakini
