Pasai apa Menteri Pengakutan tak kena tangkap...

MP mahu Liow ditahan bawah Ops Warta...

- mk

MP wants minister Liow nabbed under Ops Warta...

With some 836 people arrested to date for not settling their summonses, a minister who has done the same should not be spared, said Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng.

Lim in a press conference today made public the summons record of Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai, which showed he had two outstanding summonses for speeding issued under the automated enforcement system (AES).

Liow’s vehicle also had another summons for having tinted his windows too dark. Two of the summonses were from 2013 while the third was from 2014.

"Why didn't he pay the fines? Should the people follow the minister as an example?

"The police should immediately bring him to court for the unpaid traffic summons or call off the ongoing Ops Warta," Lim (photo) declared.

Liow did not respond to Malaysiakini's request for comment. - mk

Pulau Pinang Tidak Ada Tempat Untuk Pelarian Rohingya...

— Siakapkeli.my

Rohingya and Bangladeshi refugees on Pulau Jerjak...

Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng said that the Rohingya and Bangladeshi refugees should be housed on federal instead of state land, insisting that Penang has “limited space”.

Lim told The Star that there are already 50,000 Rohingya Myanmar in Penang already.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had previously suggested Penang as a suitable location for the 7,000 refugees, who were rescued after Putrajaya relented to public pressure—due to it being located in the north, making their eventual departure after a year easier.

“Maybe the IGP knows something we don’t. Maybe he is thinking of Pulau Jerejak. We are struggling to figure out where in Penang he has in mind.

“Our state is too densely populated to be suitable,” Lim was quoted as saying.

However, Lim also added that he had heard nothing from the National Security Council on any plans to house the refugees.

Proving a point

Putrajaya subsequently went on the offensive, with home minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi pestering Penang to take in the refugees if the opposition-run state is the “champion of human rights it claims to be”.

“We want to see the sincerity of the Penang government, led by DAP that are partners with PKR and PAS, that claims to champion human rights and is always asking the Government to adopt humanitarian policies,” Zahid said.

The home minister also said that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), as well as NGOs, to help to bear the cost of caring for the refugees.

“We want to tell the international community, especially UNHCR and IOM, that what we have done is something good. And we hope they do not just give out UNHCR cards and in the end, place the responsibility on Malaysia.

“We hope they will help us bear the cost of feeding them. It cost RM6.50 to feed one migrant per day. That is a large expenditure,” he said.

Richard Towle of UNHCR had hitherto tried to alleviate Putrajaya’s fears of being overwhelmed by a refugee crisis, insisting that only half of the 7,000 rescued need shelter.

This is because approximately half of the rescued people are political refugees, while the other half are Bangladeshi economic migrants.

“We are not talking about a tidal wave of people that is going to swamp the resources of any particular country in the region.

“It is not a volume of people that will fundamentally alter the demographics of the country like we’ve seen from Syria into Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey today,” Towle said. - rakyattimes
