"Mereka (seorang demi seorang) cakap bukan saya bukan saya.

Universiti Malaya today suspended student union president Fahmi Zainol for two semesters and slapped him with a fine of RM600.

He was charged for among others organising a gathering on campus featuing Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, without the university's permission on Oct 27.

Fahmi is among two of the eight students faced to the discplinary hearing today who was suspended.

Student Safwan Shamsudin was suspened for a semester with immediate effect, fined and given a warning, Fahmi said on Facebook.

Four others were let off with a warning and fined RM150 each.

Khairol Najib is the only one among the activists dubbed the UM8 to escape with only a warning.

Abraham Au was found not guilty.

Appealing suspension

Fahmi, a final semester undergraduate, said he will appeal the decision.

He will take the matter to court if the appeal is rejected, he said.

He earlier faced a panel of three led by Professor Zanariah Abdullah, who questioned him from 9.20am to 12.15pm.

He said that the panel were shown several newspaper clippings on the rally as well as pictures of the incident.

However, the security guards who were called as witnesses denied they had taken those pictures.

On Oct 27 about 2,000 students and supporters stormed into UM's main campus to attend the talk by Anwar.

UM had cancelled classes, locked the gates and turned off the lights, citing power maintenance.

Fahmi and other activists have also been hackled, arrested, evicted and made to take urine tests in their roadshow to various campuses nationwide.

The roadshow was to campaign for student autonomy on campus.

Fahmi was also issued a showcause letter from the Public Service Department, who threatened to make him pay back the PSD scholarhsip awarded to him. - mk

Stop the poppycock, 'old man' Dr M told...

Their political enmity is legendary, one that has spanned over decades and shows little signs of abating.

In the latest instalment, Lim Kit Siang is seeing red over Dr Mahathir Mohamad's remark that the people dread the possibility of him helming the government.

However, the 73-year-old veteran opposition leader forgave the 89-year-old former prime minister, whom he described as someone advanced in age.

"I forgive him for all his transgressions as we must take into account he is a nonagenarian. But he should stop being a merchant of hate and fear," Lim tweeted.

Initially, Lim said he thought Mahathir was warning that Anwar Ibrahim and himself would be arrested.

"But he completely went off tangent. Getting senile?" he asked.

In an exclusive interview with Sinar Harian published yesterday, Mahathir said the people supported BN because they feared Anwar and Lim leading the nation.

"If they get Anwar (as prime minister), they would see Kit Siang becoming deputy prime minister and then home minister and people would get arrested. That is what they reject," he had said.

'Mahathir has a very fertile imagination'

Apart from pondering if Mahathir was suffering from dementia, Lim also said the former prime minister possessed a "very fertile imagination" and dismissed his latest remarks as "quite a yarn".

"What did he say when I contested in Gelang Patah in GE13? What did he warn if I win? Now, new spin," he added.

During the last general election, Mahathir had campaigned for BN against Lim at the Gelang Patah parliamentary constituency in Johor.

He had asked voters to ensure that the seat would be Lim's "burial ground" but the latter emerged victorious after defeating former Johor menteri besar Abdul Ghani Othman.

Instead of "spouting poppycock", Lim said, Mahathir should reveal who are those capable of replacing Najib Abdul Razak as prime minister.

In the same interview with Sinar Harian, Mahathir had said that there were many candidates qualified to replace Najib.- mk

cheers.
