Pelajar bakar patung timbalan VC UM...

Kerana kecewa, pelajar hari ini bertindak membakar patung Timbalan Naib Canselor Universiti Malaya (UM), Rohana Yusof selepas beliau gagal memberi respons terhadap tuntutan mereka supaya tuduhan terhadap "UM8" digugurkan.

Menurut Presiden Persatuan Pelajar Islam (PMI), Khairul Najib, pelajar juga membawa plakad, yang antara lain berbunyi, 'See you in court'.

Angry students torch effigy of UM deputy VC...

Frustrated students today torched an effigy of Universiti Malaya deputy vice-chancellor Rohana Yusof after she failed to respond to their demands to drop the charges against the “UM8".

According to Islamic Students Association (PMI) president Khairul Najib, the students also held placards, which among others read, ‘See you in court’ outside the chancellory building.

He warned that if the varsity did not drop the charges, they would bring the matter to court.

The students had camped in front of the university’s Student Affairs’ Department and later moved to the chancellory building upon learning that Rohana is currently in Johor.

The students also pasted the placards on the windows of the building, but they were removed by security guards later.

On behalf of the adminstration, Mohd Hamdi Abd Shukor, UM deputy VC (Academic and International), had come out and accepted a memorandum from the students, he added.

The students had camped in front of the university’s Student Affairs’ Department and later moved to the chancellory building upon learning that Rohana (left) is currently in Johor.

As such, UM vice-chancellor Mohd Amin Jalaludin will have a meeting with Universiti Malaya Students Association at 8pm tonight to "discuss the matter of UM8", Khairul Najib told Malaysiakini when contacted.

"We hope the tonight's decision will favour the UM8," he said.

– tmi

Insistence on ‘Hudud’ will break Pakatan...

DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC) member Gobind Singh Deo was blunt when he told PAS that its insistence in implementing ‘hudud’ law would jeopardise both the working relations among Pakatan Rakyat partners, as well as the support it enjoyed from the people.

Speaking to reporters at his office in Medan Damansara, Gobind said, “When we set up Pakatan Rakyat, both in 2008 and 2013, ‘hudud’ was not in our agreement.

“As such, for as long as PAS remains in Pakatan Rakyat, they have to subscribe fully to the common policy framework of all the three parties.

“If they persist to push on the implementation of hudud, then we must state clearly our objection to them.”

Responding to statements by PAS MP Mahfuz Omar who told DAP’s Lim Kit Siang to butt out of matters concerning “hudud”, Gobind said, “Both DAP and PKR are duty bound to speak up and remind them (PAS) that they must commit themselves to the earlier agreement.”

Gobind added that DAP had been clear and consistent on the matter of “hudud” all along, citing the talking points at the party’s National Conference yesterday and that the outright rejection of “hudud” was not a personal stand but a collective stand by the party.

“When we went to the polls in 2008 and 2013, we went in as Pakatan Rakyat, and the support that we obtained was largely on the understanding that PAS will not push for the implementation of ‘hudud.’

“PAS insistence of ‘hudud’ is contrary to the spirit of Pakatan, and in that context, will jeopardise Pakatan Rakyat,” said Gobind.

Gobind also clarified that besides fragile working relations between the three parties due to their different ideologies, PR’s support structure would also be in jeopardy should PAS have its way and implement “hudud”.

“It would substantially change the demographics of people and their thinking of Pakatan Rakyat.

The Puchong MP, who is also a practising lawyer, claimed that “hudud” law was unconstitutional, and would present other administrative problems arising from its implementation.

When asked about the alleged strained relations between PAS and DAP, Gobind assured that all three parties were working well in the state government of Selangor and in his Parliamentary district of Puchong.

However, he added, “The only problem that we have expressed many times, is on the national level.

“Pakatan leadership has to hold meetings in which decision makers need to attend.

“Having representatives from the party who cannot make decisions in a meeting would make it unfruitful.- fmt
