Menara Umno's 'tilting' sign stirs panic in Penang...
Last June, the lightning arrestor that fell from the 21-storey Menara Umno in Penang killed two persons during a freak storm.
One of the victims, hawker Lim Chin Aik, 44, who was passing by Jalan Macalister that fateful day on June 13 and whose body was never found, was caught under the massive structure as it crashed down to the road.
Yesterday, photos of Menara Umno's roof top signage that appears to be tilting 15 degrees made its rounds on the social media, causing slight panic among Penangites on the island.
Facebook users are warning others to keep away from Jalan Macalister where the building is situated as the structure appears to be in danger of collapsing.
However, the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) building director Yew Tung Seang denied that the possibility.
Asked today, Yew said his department has immediately sent its officers to check on the building.
"We went to check as soon as we heard the rumours and concerns of the people, especially after photos were seen circulating on Facebook," Yew told Malaysiakini.
"We are not taking any chances, MPPP sent our officers to the site yesterday afternoon for further investigation," he added.
Yew said the MPPP found the roof top framed structure intact and there is no sign of tilting.
He added that the photo which has gone viral was taken from an angle which showed as if the structure is slanted but it was designed that way on purpose.
"That angle will give a misleading visual effect if looked from a particular angle," Yew said.
He urged the public to check or lodge complaints with the MPPP first before circulating such photos on the social media, causing panic.
"We would immediately act when we receive such complaints, we will check the building and if there were dangers, we would immediately inform and caution the public," he added.
Menara Umno is also home to Penang Umno which often holds its party meetings on the sixth floor.
In May, the body of 21 year old law student Tieu Hooi Theng was found on the ground floor of Menara Umno.
She was believed to have fallen from the top of the building which also houses a college, and the victim was reportedly about to sit for her exam the day she was found dead.- mk
