Injured student leader challenges police to show full video recording...
The student leader injured in the demonstration outside Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim is challenging the police to release the full video recordings of the incident. Gerakan Menuntut Kebebasan Akademik (Bebas) chairperson Muhammad Safwan Anang insisted that the four video clips on the fracas released by police only showed what transpired prior to the scuffle between police and students, during which he was seriously injured.
"We condemn the police for doing so. Why didn't they upload the true picture of what happened during the scuffle?
"That means that the police, in denying the scuffle, are hiding part of the evidence," Safwan said of last Sunday's pre-dawn incident outside the UPSI campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak.
Still being moved around in a wheelchair, Safwan was speaking to reporters after lodging a report at Dang Wangi police station this afternoon.
In his report, he accuses police of brutality during the scuffle, and also complained about the smashing of his car windshield by persons unknown the following morning.
He maintained his claim that police officers punched him on his left cheek and kneed him on his right chest when they arrested him, after which he suffered breathing difficulties and lost consciousness.
Some 70 students from universities around country had gathered in support of academic freedom and for Adam Adli Abdul Halim - the student facing disciplinary proceedings for lowering a flag depicting Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak at the Umno headquarters.
A total of 17 students were arrested that night.
Police have consistently denied that violence was used to disperse the students and maintain that the injuries they suffered were self-inflicted. The police force has also released its video clips of the incident on its new YouTube page to support the claims.
The videos clips begin by asking, "To all Malaysians, do you want would-be leaders behaving like this?" The clips show the students taking part in the protest, a police officer asking them to disperse and their refusal to do so.
Safwan's counsel Ahmad Zamri Asa'an Khuzaimi (left) said he has evidence the refute the police statement on the incident in the form of video clips and a medical report on Safwan.
"The medical report confirms that his injuries are real. This refutes allegations that the injuries are self-inflicted, which is very ridiculous," Ahmad Zamri said.
