The Foreign Ministry revealed in Parliament today that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's trip to Kazakhstan in June cost more than RM1 million.The total figure of RM1,072,213.22, was for the PM and his entourage to attend the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF).
"During the 7th WIEF, five agreements between Malaysia and Kazakhstan were signed," Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said in a written reply to Chua Tian Chang (PKR-Batu).
Najib visited the Central Asian country on June 5 and 6, during which he also met Kazakh government officials.
"The visit resulted in the signing of (another) three agreements between Malaysia and Kazakhstan," the minister added.
However, the visit stirred controversy when PAS parliamentarian Dzulkefly Ahmad alleged that the true purpose of the visit was for Najib's daughter's pre-engagement visit.
He also claimed that officials in Najib's service were harassed to accommodate this. The Foreign Ministry had earlier dismissed these claims as "totally unfounded" .
Najib’s daughter Noorhayana Najwa wasengaged to Daniyar Nazarbayev in a ceremony at Seri Perdana in Putrajaya on Jun 17. Daniyar is the son of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Anifah also revealed that the government spent RM323,268.19 on a separate trip to Turkmenistan on July 11 to 12, where Najib opened a Petronas oil terminal in Kiyanli, Turkmenbashi, and launched the Malaysian embassy in Ashgabat.
