Law professor Abdul Aziz Bari, whose suspension by Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) was lifted yesterday, says thing are far from over. In fact, he adds, the situation has worsened."They (the university) expect me to work and do things as usual, but I remain a suspect as the police continue to harass me," he told Malaysiakini.
Aziz said while the investigation by UIA has not concluded, his suspension was lifted "to appease the public".
"What would come after this? Disciplinary action from UIA?"
Or, he added, would the police recommend that he be prosecuted under the Sedition Act?
The constitutional law expert said he had to continue working despite being troubled by these uncertainties.
Mindful of this, Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM), which planned to voice the students' protest on the actions against Aziz to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak during his scheduled visit to the university later today, said its protest would go on.
In a press statement this morning, the students' coalition said it wanted to create awareness that academic freedom was being stifled in the country, and that this extended beyond Aziz's case."Besides, the protest also is to urge the UIA administration to stop its investigation (against Aziz), even though the suspension has been lifted."
The student activists are expected to gather at the entrance to UIA at 7pm today.
And, according to an update from national news agency Bernama, Najib's speech will be read by Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, a signal that the premier may skip the visit to avoid the protesting students.
