Zaid - Najib crazy of 2/3 majority.......

Pakatan Rakyat coordinator Zaid Ibrahim has urged Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to stop 'poaching' PKR MPs, urging him to respect the democratic process instead.

"Why is he crazy for a two-thirds majority in Parliament? Currently, Barisan Nasional has enough seats to pass any law easily," said Zaid (left) at a hastily arranged press conference at his home today.

"Do you think England is strong because they have a two-thirds (majority)? No! England never had a two-thirds majority."

PKR has been rocked by three defections in as many weeks, prompting questions over the fate of the party and its leadership, particularly that of de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim. Assuming that the three defectors vote in line with BN in the Dewan Rakyat, the coalition only needs seven more supporters to regain its coveted two-thirds majority in Parliament.

Zaid said BN should challenge Pakatan Rakyat on a level playing field to debate policies rather than go fishing for the latter's elected representatives. He also said the Prime Minister should focus his attention on resolving the many problems facing the coutry. Zaid urged the Prime Minister to follow the footsteps of his predecessor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, as he did not entice defectors even though PAS only had a one-seat majority in Kelantan.

"We (Umno) could have easily grabbed Kelantan but Pak Lah did not encourage this, as it is immoral," said Zaid, who was Kota Bharu Umno division chief in the early 2000s.

Zaid also pointed to former premier Abdul Razak, Najib's father, who worked towards lifting the suspension of Parliament soon after the May 13, 1969 incident even though he could have run the country without it.

"These are the principles that should be practiced by Najib, he should forget going crazy over having a two-thirds majority and work towards the (betterment of the) country's democracy," he added.

The former de facto law minister claimed that there was money and other incentives involved in the recent defection of PKR MPs.

"The act of showing suitcases full of money to attract members should not be practiced," he added.

However, he refused to cite the source of this accusation for 'ethical reasons'. PKR lost pole position on the Dewan Rakyat opposition bench after Zahrain Hashim (Bayan Baru), Tan Tee Beng (Nibong Tebal) and Mohsin Fadzli Samsuri (Bagan Serai) quit the party and declared themselves independent.
