- mk
Kenyataan penuh Zahid Hamidi berkenaan surat tentang Paul Phua(Zahid Hamidi’s full statement on Paul Phua letter)
Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s full statement on Paul Phua letter.
EXPLANATION ON THE LETTER TO THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION (FBI) UNITED STATES
The following is regarding the issue of my letter to the deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) United States dated Dec 18 2014, in which I explained the status of a Malaysian called Paul Wei Sheng Phua or Paul Phua, who was accused of being involved in illegal gambling in the United States and who is being tried in that country’s court.
As the Minister of Home Affairs who is responsible in matters of national security, I explained the status of Paul Phua and the “14K Triad” underworld gang, as was mentioned by the Inspector General of Police:
- The “14K Triad” underworld gang does not exist in Malaysia;
- Paul Phua is not a member of the “14K Triad” underworld gang in Malaysia
On the dispute over the contents of my letter regarding Paul Phua’s alleged assistance to the government in security matters, this matter cannot be revealed as the issue of security is highly confidential and cannot be easily announced to the public. Also, official government information is protected under the Official Secrets Act 1972.
So, by using my discretion, I issued a letter to explain the status of Paul Phua to the FBI. It is not a letter of support asking them to refrain from pressing charges against Paul Phua as reported in pro-opposition portals.
I have said repeatedly that I will definitely combat all elements of gangsterism, gambling, and drugs in our country.
Once again, I would like to stress that I will never compromise with unhealthy activities and this episode has strengthened my resolve to continue combating and destroying these criminal activities.
The government will definitely not support any actions of individuals, including Paul Phua, who are closely linked to any criminal organisations, if any
PUTRAJAYA: Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today stated that his letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was not a support letter to not charge Malaysian Paul Phua who was facing legal action in the United States.
Zahid also tells us that "On the dispute over the contents of my letter regarding Paul Phua’s alleged assistance to the government in security matters, this matter cannot be revealed as the issue of security is highly confidential and cannot be easily announced to the public. Also, official government information is protected under the Official Secrets Act 1972".
What's the big secret, Kit Siang asks cabinet...
DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has urged the cabinet
to come clean on behalf of Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, over what
national security projects the government has with alleged kingpin Paul
Phua.
This comes after Zahid refused to divulge any information on the matter, claiming that it is a "big secret" and citing the Official Secrets Act 1972.
"The cabinet - on Wednesday - should uphold the principles of good governance and accountability and declassify information on the 'national security projects' involving alleged gambling kingpin Paul Phua, which the police knew nothing about.
"The cabinet should let Malaysians know whether there had been such “national security projects” involving Phua in the past, how many of them and why the Police knew nothing about it," Lim (left) said in a statement today.
Zahid became embroiled in controversy after his letter dated Dec 18 last year to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was made public, in which he contradicted the Malaysian police by saying that Phua was not a 14K triad member.
In the letter, he also claimed that Phua had assisted the Malaysian government on "national security" projects.
Lim, who is also Gelang Patah MP, stressed that the government should uphold the principles of accountability and transparency by declassifying the supposed national security projects involving an alleged gambling kingpin.
"If Zahid is not prepared to honestly and publicly admit and apologise for his infamous letter to the FBI vouching for the character of an alleged gambling kingpin, the cabinet - at its meeting on Wednedsay - must revisit the issue, and take a stand which is in accord with national interests," he noted.
Lim added that the public wants to know if the so-called national security projects took place under Zahid's tenure as home minister or under his predecessor, Hishammuddin Hussein.- mk
Anwar sedia bantu SPRM siasat Daim...
Ketua pembangkang itu bagaimanapun mengharapkan Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM) bersikap profesional ketika menjalankan tugasan itu.
"Jika mereka tanyakan saya, saya akan bekerjasama, tiada masalah. Itu tanggungjawab saya membantu siasatan. Tapi mereka perlu bersikap profesional," katanya selepas dialog bersama belia Selangor, di Petaling Jaya hari ini.
Beliau berkata mempunyai "bukti" penyalahgunaan kuasa Daim namun berkata ianya disembunyikan.
- tmi
Anwar: I'll give proof about Daim to MACC...
Daim's alleged business interests has once again come under scrutiny - with even government-friendly media carrying reports about him - following Daim’s recent criticisms of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's policies.
Anwar added that he would be willing to cooperate if the MACC decides to probe Daim. However, he cautioned that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) must carry out its duties professionally.
"If they call me, of course I will cooperate. In fact, I have solid evidence," he stressed.
Anwar (left) has previously claimed to possess information about Daim's wealth.
He said he had "proof" of Daim's alleged abuse of powers but it was shelved. However, he did not elaborate on the statement, although he said MACC should not focus its investigations solely on Daim's banking business.
Opposition politicians had previously urged anti-graft authorities to investigate Daim, with PKR's Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin in November last year highlighting the lack of police action against the former finance minister despite a police report lodged in 1999.
Anwar had lodged that report 15 years ago, accusing Daim of amassing billions of ringgit in African and Eastern Europe banks through proxies.
Daim himself had welcomed a MACC investigation after acknowledging the mainstream media had been used to attack him.
In a statement to state news agency Bernama, Daim had said he was confident the MACC would be able to carry out the probe.
"I stand ready to support and cooperate with MACC in its investigation," he said in the statement.
It was reported previously that Daim had confirmed owning a bank in Tanzania, but denied any abuse of power.
Daim was quoted by the news report as saying that he had been investigated on the matter twice in 1999, and they found nothing.
"We hope the investigation is thorough and does not spare anyone," Anwar said of possible probes.
Pro-Umno bloggers recently reported that Daim had been attacked by cybertroopers aligned to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for criticising Putrajaya's handling of the economy.
Daim, along with former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, have emerged as strong critics of Najib's administration over his handling of the economy and national politics.
In what is seen as a psychological war, Najib's supporters in the press and online portals have been attacking Daim with critical articles.
But veteran journalist Datuk A. Kadir Jasin warned a few days ago that the Umno-controlled media group, Media Prima Bhd, should stop sniping at Daim as it could backfire on Najib.
Najib was more vulnerable to personal attacks than Daim and other critics, Kadir, the retired editor of the New Straits Times Press group, said in his blog.
"The cheap shots about Mohd Najib's critics might smear their image but these people are not the PM and they don't have political positions," said Kadir, referring to the PM by his full name.
"But the juicier stories about Mohd Najib, if there is, can topple him," Kadir said.- mk/tmi
