Peliknya para pemimpin UMNO kata surat beliau keluar UMNO belum lagi diterima tapi mengapa nak hantar surat tarik balik pula?

Ahmad: Najib said sorry, and so did I...

The two-day Terengganu rebellion is over - former menteri besar Ahmad Said has withdrawn his resignation from Umno after Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak apologised to him.

Ahmad said that he, too, reciprocated by saying sorry.

"He apologised to me for the misunderstanding and I also apologised for my actions," Ahmad told a press conference at his residence in Kemaman this evening.

In particular, he said that he forgave Najib for the misunderstanding related to his daughter's wedding "because he had requested to only resign after the event was over".

"Najib thought the wedding was over on the 10th of this month, but actually there is another reception on the 17th and one more on the 31st in Kuala Lumpur," he said.

Ahmad said his daughter's wedding was a matter of his honour and he resigned from Umno because of Najib's refusal to respect his request.

"Now that we have apologised to each other, I have made the decision to retract my resignation and (Ajil assemblyperson) Ghazali Taib (right) will also do the same."

However, Ghazali was not present at the press conference.

'PM may have misheard'

Ahmad, who spoke to Najib earlier today, said the prime minister may have misheard about the details of his daughter's wedding when he was earlier asked to resign.

Ahmad said it was the Terengganu sultan which had fixed his daughter's wedding on the 10th and subsequent functions were fixed accordingly.

"I am a person who has a sensitive spirit, I don't like people to be rough with me," he said, adding that his daughter had been traumatised over the experience.

The wedding, which almost brought down the Terengganu government, will go on as planned on May 17, said Ahmad.

Tents were visible in the compound of Ahmad’s three-storey bungalow in preparation for the thanksgiving wedding reception.

Despite the controversy, Ahmad was all smiles during the brief six-minute press conference and willingly took further questions as reporters swarmed him as he was leaving.

Ahmad's aide also presented to reporters Ahmad's resignation withdrawal letter dated today and addressed to the Umno secretary-general.

"I gladly retract my declaration of quitting Umno and maintain all positions in Umno and as Umno's Kijal state assemblyperson," the letter read.

Resignation triggered crisis

Ahmad had on late Monday night announced he was quitting Umno, hours after being replaced as menteri besar by Seberang Takir  assemblyperson Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman.

Ajil state assemblyperson Ghazali Taib and Bukit Besi state assemblyperson Roslee Daud (left) had followed suit hours later, triggering a crisis in the state.

The resignations saw BN lose its majority in the state assembly with only 14 BN representatives to Pakatan Rakyat's 15 representatives, on top of the three Umno-turned-independent assemblypersons.

The move prompted a mad rush to salvage the BN government in Terengganu with all the state's BN assemblypersons summoned to Putrajaya for a meeting with the prime minister this afternoon.

Following the meeting, Razif declared the crisis averted and Ahmad's declaration of a truce followed hours later.- mk

Maknanya kebanyakan pemimpin kita hanya ‘bertuhankan’ wang ringgit.

Bak kata orang putih,’there is no smoke without fire’.

-harakahdaily

Ahmad Said tak hadir pertemuan dengan Najib...

Mat Said returning to UMNO's embrace...

A two-day rebellion appears to have been brought to an end with ringleader former Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Said expected to retract his resignation from Umno today.

Newly-appointed MB Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman announced this after a meeting with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in Putrajaya today.

Ahmad Razif also said that Ajil assemblyperson Ghazali Taib, who quit Umno alongside Ahmad, is also returning to the party's fold.

"The (state legislative assembly) speaker said that he has not received any letter stating that they have returned (to Umno but) we are confident that given a little time, the number of BN assemblypersons (in the state) will go back to 17.

"We were informed that the are communications between the prime minister and Ahmad and it is positive.

"I have worked with Ahmad for six years and God-willing he will return to us," Razif said after heading a delegation to meet the PM today.

The delegation made up of 13 BN assemblypersons and the Terengganu speaker also met with the cabinet.

However, when contacted, Ahmad's aide declined to confirm whether the Kijal assemblyperson will retract his resignation letter.

Ahmad has called for a press conference at his home in the east coast state tonight.

Neither Ahmad or Ghazali were present at the Putrajaya meeting. Also absent was Hulu Besut representative Nawi Mohamad.

If the duo take back their quit letters, BN maintains its two-seat majority, holding 17 seats against Pakatan Rakyat's 15.

Yesterday, Bukit Besi assemblyperson Roslee Daud, the third assemblyperson who announced quitting Umno, was reported to have returned to the fold.- mk

- harakahdaily

Najib admits to missteps in search for MH370...

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has admitted to missteps in the search for MH370, and urged other countries to learn from the incident.

He said the mistakes were made despite Malaysia doing its best in “near impossible circumstances” to pull together a multinational search effort that has since involved 26 countries.

“But we didn't get everything right. In the first few days after the plane disappeared, we were so focused on trying to find the aircraft that we did not prioritise our communications.

“Also, it took air traffic controllers four hours to launch the search-and-rescue operation,” Najib wrote in an opinion piece published in the Wall Street Journal last night.

While pointing out that the search effort got started faster than the six hours it took in the Air France Flight 447 crash in 2009, he said the delays will be investigated.

He urged that the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which had been meeting since Monday on ways to implement global aircraft tracking, to press forward with the agenda.

The UN body’s meeting concluded this morning with a resolution to back the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) initiative to find suitable tracking solutions by September that its members can adopt voluntarily.

In the meantime, ICAO will draft binding international standards to track aircraft even in areas without radar coverage - a process that is likely to take years.

Najib said transponders and Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting Systems (Acars) that can’t be disabled in mid-air should be considered.

In addition, he also backed the European Union’s proposal to increase the battery life of black box pingers from 30 days to 90 days, and to increase the recording time of cockpit voice recorders (CVR) from the current standard of two hours.

“When MH370's black box is finally recovered, the most important portion of the cockpit conversation - the minutes and hours after the plane first vanished - won't be available.

“Given that a standard iPhone can record 24 hours of audio, surely the black box should have sufficient memory to record cockpit conversation for the full duration of any flight,” he said.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has urged for CVRs that can record the last 20 hours of conversation in the cockpit, which pilots’ unions see as an increased intrusion in workplace privacy.

Improvements in emergency locator beacons sought

Najib also urged improvements in emergency locator beacons, noting that they do not work well underwater and last only 24 hours.

“These changes may not have prevented the MH370 or Air France 447 tragedies. But they would make it harder for an aircraft to simply disappear, and easier to find any aircraft that did. Which would help reassure the traveling public and reduce the chances of such a drawn-out disaster reoccurring.

“The global aviation industry must not only learn the lessons of MH370 but implement them. The world learned from Air France but didn’t act. The same mistake must not be made again,” he said.

MH370 took off from KL International Airport on March 8, but then deviated from its original course to Beijing when it was in between Malaysian and Vietnamese airspace.

Its transponder and Acars system were disabled to prevent accurate tracking of its position, but experts believe it crashed somewhere in the South Indian Ocean based on analysis of satellite data.

The tragedy has often been compared the Air France Flight 447 because the two cases shared many parallels, it being the only other modern jetliner to suddenly ‘vanish’.

These include the lack of a distress call, confused initial response by air traffic controllers and rescuers, uncertainties over the location of the crash site due to inadequate tracking, vast, deep and remote oceans at search area site, and a long and expensive underwater search operation.

French investigators of the Air France incident had made several recommendations to improve global aircraft tracking and to make it easier to recover black box data, but only one recommendation was adopted for implementation starting 2018.

The new rules seek black box pingers to last 90 days, and additional pingers attached to the aircraft that can be detected further away compared to the black box pingers so that the crash site can be located quickly.- mk
