- malaysiakini

DAP: In-fighting Anwar's real enemy in Kajang...

In-fighting in PKR, which continues to rage on despite the controversial ‘Kajang Move’, seems to be irking its Pakatan Rakyat partner DAP.

In a statement today, DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang (left) sent a clear message to its ally to get its house in order so as not to shame to coalition in the March 23 Kajang by-election.

“(A) house divided cannot stand - Anwar's real enemies in the Kajang by-election are not independents, MCA or even Umno but Pakatan Rakyat/PKR feuds and infighting,” he said, referring to PKR's candidate Anwar Ibrahim.

“In the Kajang by-election, we can only suffer defeats and setbacks of our own making.”

“At stake in the Kajang by-election is not just Anwar’s personal political future, but the future of Pakatan Rakyat, three million Selangorians and 30 million Malaysians,” he warned.

"We must never forget what Abraham Lincoln said: A house divided against itself cannot stand," he said.

According to Lim, winning Kajang by a slimmer majority than incumbent Lee Chin Cheh's majority of close to 7,000 will affect more than just the political career of  Anwar, who is also PKR de facto leader.

Instead, he said, it will have ramifications upon three million residents of Selangor and 30 million Malaysians as it causes backlash on Pakatan.

“It is imperative that all the three Pakatan parties of PKR, PAS and DAP take immediate measures to close ranks, put aside our differences, ensure that we do not shoot ourselves in the foot and deny our children and children’s children the one chance in more than half-a-century for political change in Putrajaya,” he said.

Lim's statement comes hours before Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim is due to announce his intention to challenge Selangor deputy president Azmin Ali  in the party polls in April.

The Kajang Move - which saw the resignation a PKR assemblyperson to pave the way for a by-election - is among others seen as a way for Anwar to enter state assembly, take over as MB and quell the feud between Khalid and Azmin factions.

Lim warned that in the by-election, Pakatan could only suffer defeat and setbacks through its own making.

Lim's warning comes as PKR continued to snipe at Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim over the water MoU he had signed with Putrajaya.

Selangor PAS had also complained publicly about Anwar’s purported plan to take over the Selangor government should he win the by-election.

Adding to the uncertainty is Khalid’s repeated insistence that there was not going to be a change to the state leadership, and talk that the Menteri Besar was planning to mount a challenge for the PKR deputy president’s post.

Lim said against this scenario it was likely that the pact could be defeated at the ballot.

He said Anwar’s real enemies in the Kajang by-election were not the independent candidates, MCA or even UMNO, but PR/PKR internal feuds and in-fighting.

“Let us face up to the harsh reality that a defeat in the Kajang by-election – in failing to achieve a resounding and historic victory – cannot be ruled out,” the Gelang Patah MP said.

Lim said the Kajang by-election promises to be the “by-election of the century” in Malaysia, deciding not only on who will be the elected representative of the Selangor state assembly seat of Kajang, the political leadership in Selangor, but most important of all, the political configuration of the federal centre of power in Putrajaya in the immediate future.

“All the three Pakatan Rakyat parties of PKR, PAS and DAP must be fully united and inspired by the common goal of creating a new Malaysia where all her citizenry, regardless of race, religion or region, are united with one common vision for an united, harmonious, free, democratic, just, competitive, progressive and prosperous Malaysia."

Lim said for this reason, the three Pakatan Rakyat parties must not only ensure Anwar wins in the Kajang by-election on March 23, but wins with a resounding and thunderous majority which will immediately send out a message to all nooks and corners of Malaysia that Putrajaya awaits change in the 14th general election.

“Just a simple victory in Kajang is a defeat,” he said.

The Kajang seat fell vacant after its incumbent, Lee Chin Cheh from PKR, resigned on January 27.

The EC has fixed March 11 for nomination and polling on March 23.

Barisan Nasional has named MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun as its candidate, while PKR has announced that it will be fielding its adviser, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also Opposition Leader.

The state seat comprises 38,965 registered voters. At the last general election in May, 2013, the seat saw a voter turnout of 87.9% with 541 spoilt votes. It has 48% Malay voters, Chinese 41%, Indian 10% and others 1%.

In the 2013 general election, PKR’s Lee garnered 19,571 votes followed by Lee Ban Seng (Barisan Nasional-MCA) with 12,747 votes and Mohamad Ismail (Berjasa) 1,014 votes. The three independent candidates who contested the seat were Mohd Iwan Jefrey Abdul Majib (249 votes), Ong Yan Foo (85 votes) and Mohd Khalid Kassim (83 votes).

Lee won the seat with a comfortable 6,824 vote majority. Except for the MCA candidate, all other aspirants lost their deposits in the polls. - tmi/malaysiakini

Khalid to challenge Azmin in PKR polls...

It appears that the fissures in PKR are widening, with Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim set to challenge Azmin Ali for the party deputy president post.

Abdul Khalid confirmed his candidacy at a dinner with PKR grassroots leaders tonight but said he will only make a formal announcement after the Kajang by-election.

Abdul Khalid, who is Kajang by-election director, urged his supporters not to campaign for him yet until the Kajang contest was over.

“I have a request, although I am going to announce my intention, but make sure the party affair will not go beyond the Kajang by-election.

“I won’t show that I prioritise myself more than the party as our party struggle is always our common struggle.

“After that, I will offer myself to contest deputy president post in the party election,” Khalid said at his official residence as some 250 supporters, mostly comprising of Selangor PKR grassroots leaders, cheered.

Notably though, there were no top PKR leaders present at the dinner tonight except for some familiar party faces.

Among those present former PKR vice-president candidate Mustafa Kamil Ayub, former Malaysian Trades Union Congress president Syed Shahir Syed Mohamud and constitutional lawyer Abdul Aziz Bari.

Earlier today, Khalid's office had confirmed rumours of Khalid’s candidacy after a dinner invitation to declare his intent was circulated among party members.

"Yes, it's true. The MB will offer himself to contest the deputy president's post," Khalid's political secretary Azman Abidin told Malaysiakini.

The official invitation for tonight's event 'Majlis Kasih Bertaut' did not mention anything about Khalid's impending announcement.

However, there was an "unofficial invitation" circulating among party leaders, which states that the menteri besar will reveal that he is prepared to do battle for the number two slot.

It is an open secret that Khalid and Azmin, the latter considered PKR supremo Anwar Ibrahim's blue-eyed boy, have always been at loggerheads.

Azmin could not be reached, although his aide has informed Malaysiakini that the Gombak MP has no comment.

Asked whether Azmin (right) will defend his post, his aide said: "We will announce it later."

During an interview with Malaysiakini after he had announced Anwar's candidacy for the Kajang by-election, Khalid had remarked that he plans to invest more time on "politicking".

Contesting the post indicates that Khalid is not going anywhere, despite the Kajang by-election being widely viewed as a means to pave the way for Anwar to enter the state assembly and oust Khalid as MB.

Interestingly, Khalid is PKR's election director for the Kajang by-election, which will take place on March 23.- malaysiakini
