Bagaimana, Pengarah Profesor Datuk Dr Mohamad Redzuan Othman berkata, arahan untuk membatalkan seminar ini tidak boleh diterima oleh pihaknya sebagai penganjur.
Oleh itu, forum yang disertai oleh pemimpin media alternatif iaitu dari Harakahdaily, Malaysiakini dan Sinar Harian diteruskan pagi tadi.
Namun forum yang sepatutnya disertai oleh Naib Presiden PAS, Datuk Husam Musa, Naib Presiden PKR Nurul Izzah Anwar, Timbalan Menteri Pendidikan Tinggi Datuk Saifudin Abdullah dan anggota Parlimen Hulu Selangor, P Kamalanathan dibatalkan.
Mereka digantikan oleh beberapa ahli akademik petang ini.
"Apabila saya maklukan kepada Nurul Izzah, dia bertanya bolehkah beliau datang, saya kata dia bebas untuk datang," kata Prof Ridhuan ketika memberikan ucapan pembukaan di Dewan Kuliah B, Fakulti Sastera hari ini.
Sejak semalam pelbagai maklumat tersebar kononnya program perbincangan ilmiah ini dibatalkan.
Ridhuan berkata, sebaik saja balik dari luar negara, pelbagai pesanan diterima beliau agar seminar pilihan raya ini dibatalkan termasuk dari Pejabat Perdana Menteri dan Kementerian Pendidikan Tinggi.
Secara berseloroh Ridhuan berkata, sebelum ini nama Profesor Aziz Bari dari Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) menjadi sasaran di samping Ketua Ekonomis Bank Islam, Azrul Azwar Ahmad Tajudin.
"Ada orang kata, selepas mereka, saya pula menjadi sasaran sekarang," katanya.
Sehubungan itu, beliau kata, seminar sebegini hanya boleh diikuti di Universiti Malaya sahaja sekarang ini.-harakahdaily
Don decries gov't pressure on UM forum...
The Universiti Malaya Centre for Democracy and Elections (Umcedel) today pressed on with its forum on election, albeit some amendments, after being pressured by the government to abort it.
Umcedel director Mohammad Redzuan Othman(pic,above) told the audience at the forum today that the instruction had come from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and the Higher Education Ministry.
"When I returned from London two weeks ago, I received a text message asking that it be cancelled.
"I was told this was an instruction from PMO and the Higher Education Ministry... no reason was given," he told the lecture hall in UM, Kuala Lumpur this morning.
Mohammad Redzuan, who is also UM Arts and Social Science faculty dean, said he then consulted the university's vice chancellor who was supportive and asked that he decide on the matter.
"After talking over with my colleagues, we decided we will discuss in an academic way," he said.
Opposition politicians
The bone of contention was the second session of forum which was supposed to feature opposition politicians namely PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar and PAS vice president Husam Musa as well as BN's Deputy Higher Education Minister Saifuddin Abdullah and Hulu Selangor MP P Kamalanathan.
The title of the forum was entitled: 'GE13: BN or PR will triumph?'
As a result, Mohammad Redzuan said the session was scrapped and replaced with a new session comprising of academics.
Other than this, the event also had a presentation by Mohammad Redzuan and an earlier forum featuring media personalities.
The first session entitled ‘The hopes of BN and PR' featured Harakah Daily editor-in chief Zulkifli Sulong, Sinar Harian executive editorial advisor Abdul Jalil Ali and Malaysiakini chief editor Fathi Aris Omar.However, Mohammad Redzuan said Nurul Izzah (left) will still turn up at the forum later today, but in the audience.
"When I called her and informed her not to come, she asked if she could still come as part of the audience. I said I cannot stop her, she is the MP of Lembah Pantai.
"So for those who want to see Nurul Izzah, stay back for the afternoon session," he said.-malaysiakini
