Nazri tells MACC's Shukri Abdul to shut up...

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Abdul Aziz has chided Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy commissioner (operations) Mohd Shukri Abdull for complaining about corruption cases being rejected by the Attorney-General's Chambers.

"I think Shukri (left) has a weak character. He should not make complaints openly," Nazri is quoted by Sin Chew Daily as saying in Kuala Kangsar last Saturday.

"In fact, he does not need to make any explanation to the public because it is the job of AG's Chambers to prosecute an individual. His job is only to investigate. I hope this will not confuse the people."

Nazri also demanded that Shukri stops making such statements in the future.

He was responding to Shukri's remark at a forum last Thursday that the anti-graft commission has investigated all allegations of corruption lodged with it, but it was the AG's Chambers that refused to file cases in court on grounds of insufficient evidence.

'Corruption charge will cause great shame'

Nazri explained that corruption charges would cause great shame to the accused and therefore the AG's Chambers must acted diligently, and charge the accused in court only if there is concrete evidence.

"The investigating officer may think a case is solid, but the prosecutor may think that there is still weakness," the Chinese daily quotes the de facto law minister as explaining.

Failing to convict the accused, Nazri said, would also annoy the people.

On the other hand, DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang called on MACC to publish the list of individuals whom the AG's Chambers has refused to charge in court.

The people have the right to know why MACC's recommendations were rejected, Lim said.

According to Chinese daily Nanyang Siang Pau, Lim said this in Batu Pahat yesterday, in response to Shukri's statement.


Meanwhile, an MP today questioned the rebuke issued by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Aziz against a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) official, calling him “weak”.

“Is this the attitude of our PM’s department? When a complaint is made, you threaten them,” Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong) said during the policy stage debate of the mediation Bill in its second reading in the House.

The parliamentarian argued that such behaviour coming from a minister in the PM’s department is unbecoming of the institution and by adjunct the Malaysian justice system.

“Why do you think that we need a mediation Bill to settle cases. It is because people have no confidence in our system.

“I stand for the police and the MACC officers, asking you about this now. Even though before this we (the opposition) have been accused of deriding them,” he said, asking the minister to respond.

Nazri was reported to have chastised MACC’s deputy chief Shukri Abdull for allegedly complaining that the attorney-general’s chambers had refused to charge graft suspects whom the commission had investigated and submitted.- malaysiakini

Malah, katanya, Shukri tidak perlu membuat sebarang penjelasan kepada umum kerana ia merupakan tugas Pejabat Peguam Negara untuk mendakwa seseorang individu.

Tugas Shukri, tegas Nazri, adalah hanya untuk menyiasat dan "saya harap ini tidak akan mengelirukan rakyat."

Nazri juga mahu Shukri berhenti membuat kenyataan sedemikian pada masa depan.

Beliau mengulas kenyataan Shukri di sebuah forum Khamis lepas bahawa SPRM menyiasat semua tuduhan rasuah yang diserahkan kepadanya, tetapi Pejabat Peguam Negara yang enggan memfailkan kes-kes tersebut di mahkamah atas alasan bukti tidak mencukupi.- malaysiakini
