Student leader beaten up in lead-up to campus polls...
A pro-Mahasiswa student leader from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was reportedly beaten up and splashed with paint this morning.
22-year-old Muhammad Syahir Rahimi Sukri, president of the Gabungan Mahasiswa UKM (GMUKM), was attacked by an unknown assailant at 4am.
At the time of the incident he was taking his turn looking after campaign posters for the upcoming campus elections.
“He has been taken to Serdang Hospital as he has wounds on his head and body, and is covered with paint.
“(His condition) looks serious,” PKR Youth vice chief Tan Kar Hing (photo) told Malaysiakini today when contacted.
“The incident happened in the campus. His car was also splashed with paint,” said Tan.
He speculated the attack was politically motivated as a form of intimidation.
“I think the motive of this attack is to intimidate and sow fear.
“It’s not a robbery, as nothing was stolen,” Tan, who is Simpang Pulai assemblyperson, said.
According to another student, a police report has been lodged.
Police: Student attacked by two men in helmets
Confirming the incident, Kajang district police chief Willey Richard said the Muhammad Syahir was found by his friend lying on the road behind UKM’s Ibrahim Yaakob residential college.
The friend had rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call from Muhammad Syahir, Willey said.
Muhammad Syahir was found with “slash marks and red dye on his body” at about 5.30am.
Police believe the attackers, two men in their twenties, had attacked the student using a knife.
The student said he was held up by the men during his rounds, but he could not identify them as they were wearing full-faced motorcycle helmets with dark visors.
The suspects left the scene on a black Yamaha Lagenda motorcycle, Willey said.
“Investigations are ongoing,” he said.
Muhammad Syahir was discharged from hospital later in the afternoon with severn stitches to his right arm.
He sustained slash injuries across his chest, his left arm and forehead.- mk

Guan Eng: DAP in Selangor gov’t to block PAS policies...
The DAP opted to stay in the Selangor state government in order to block PAS from carrying out “unsuitable” policies, said party leader Lim Guan Eng today.
Lim, who is secretary-general, said Parti Keadilan Rakyat was adamant on working with PAS in the coalition state government.
(The DAP has severed political relationships with PAS after the Islamist party went ahead with its agenda to enforce hudud criminal penalties in Kelantan, which the DAP maintained was a violation of the coalition’s common policy.)
He said the DAP remained in the Selangor coalition government, which is headed by PKR deputy president Azmin Ali as menteri besar, so that it could prevent PAS from introducing policies which were not suitable for Selangor residents.
If the DAP withdrew, PAS might introduce policies such as a prohibition on alcohol sales, he said.
“Our stand is clear. It is the right of PKR to work with PAS,” he said.
“However, we have to admit that DAP’s position in the Selangor state government is slightly affected,” he told reporters after attending a party event in Johor Jaya.
The DAP has declared an end to the Pakatan Rakyat coalition comprising the three parties after it split with PAS. However, Pakatan Rakyat leader Anwar Ibrahim has maintained that PAS remains a member of the coalition. - fmt
