DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang is sceptical a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will succeed, because even within the opposition, PAS is unlikely to support it.
Lim, who is Gelang Patah MP, said this in reference to Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's claim that an Umno leader is seeking the support of both opposition and government MPs to topple the government.
It this claim is true, he said, the plan is likely to get 24 Umno/BN MPs to join 88 opposition MPs to secure a simple majority in the 222-member Dewan Rakyat to oust Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
However, Lim said, this was not likely to take place as not all 88 opposition MPs would support Najib's ouster.
"It
is clear from recent statements by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang that
the new PAS leadership under him is sympathetic and supportive of the
Najib premiership, and even his 1MDB problems."When things come to a crunch in Parliament on a vote of no confidence, it may be a strategic error to assume that all the 21 PAS MPs would support DAP and PKR, as about half may remain loyal to Hadi's supportive stance for Najib.
"This reduces the number of opposition MPs who may support a vote of no confidence to around 77, which would require more Umno/BN MPs to come on board to secure a simple majority.
"Is this likely? I have grave doubts," he said in a statement today.
Regardless of whether this happens or not, Lim said, it does not contravene the law as it is merely a political manoeuvre and as such the police should not get involved.
Lim was referring to inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar who said police would investigate Zahid's claim.
The DAP stalwart said police should focus on combating crime rather than going on a "wild goose chase" on alleged plots to topple the government.- mk

Prime Minister Najib Razak splashed over US$1 million on his credit cards during the month of August in the year following the election, according to information received by Sarawak Report.
The spending took place in Europe while he was on a summer holiday.
For most people to run up such a bill on mere expenses while on holiday would seem astounding, but the Prime Minister has always declined to explain how such conspicuous spending has been funded.
The bills were run up on two cards Najib was using in August 2014, a Visa and a MasterCard from CIMB & Maybank.

Usul tak percaya pada Najib sukar berjaya...
Dr Mahathir Mohamad meramalkan bahawa Datuk Seri Najib Razak tidak akan berjaya disingkirkan sebagai perdana menteri melalui undi tidak percaya di Dewan Rakyat.
“Ini amat sukar memandangkan semua anggota Umno dilihat berhutang kepadanya. Dan pembangkang pula tidak mempunyai cukup anggota untuk meluluskan usul itu,” katanya.
Komentar beliau itu hadir sewaktu Timbalan Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Zahid Hamid mendakwa seorang anggota parlimen Umno menyediakan akuan bersumpah di kalangan MP BN dan pembangkang bagi mengisytiharkan mereka mempunyai majoriti dalam Dewan Rakyat.
Walaupun Zahid mendakwa pemimpin itu telah sedar, cakap-cakap mengenai usaha itu masih berterusan hingga hari ini susulan seramai 20 MP BN yang didakwa terlibat telah dinamakan.
Setakat ini empat MP - Datuk Hasbullah Osman (Gerik), Datuk Noraini Ahmad (Parit Sulong), Datuk Rahim Bakri (Kudat) dan Datuk Bung Moktar Radin (Kinabatangan) menafikan penglibatan mereka.
Dalam tulisan itu juga, Dr Mahathir turut menyatakan tindakan terbaru Najib mengecewakan pihak berkuasa dan Jawatankuasa Kira-kira Wang Negara (PAC) bagi menyiasat firma pelaburan 1MDB.
Ini menyebabkan desakan supaya perdana menteri perlu disingkirkan.
"Oleh itu, pandangan umum masih kekal mendesak Najib meletakkan jawatan sebagai PM," tulis Dr Mahathir.
Bekas Perdana Menteri itu juga berkata, rakyat Malaysia perlu menghadapi keadaan lebih buruk apabila ekonomi negara jatuh teruk jika Datuk Seri Najib Razak kekal sebagai perdana menteri.
Reaksi ekonomi pada masa ini sudahpun menunjukkan kejatuhan ketara namun ia akan lebih merosot jika Najib terus kekal, kata Dr Mahathir dalam tulisan di blog chedet.cc.
“Najib mungkin boleh membayar wang untuk menang dalam pilihan raya umum akan datang tetapi dia tidak akan boleh mendapatkan dana untuk menampung pembelian popularitinya.
“Kerajaan yang dipimpinnya tidak akan dapat meminjam wang. Ekonomi negara akan jatuh. Inilah alamat buruk yang menanti rakyat Malaysia kerana Najib sudah mencuri kerajaan,” kata Mahathir.
Dr Mahathir berkata ekonomi memberi tindak balas terhadap krisis politik yang berlaku apabila kadar ringgit mencatatnya kejatuhan.
Menurutnya, kadar sebelum ini pada RM3.80 bagi AS$1 tetapi kini mencecah lebih RM4 dan dilihat terus menjunam pada masa akan datang.
"Kesannya ia menjadikan negara miskin. Membayar hutang oleh 1MDB dalam Dolar Amerika akan lebih mahal. Dan 1MDB tidak mampu walaupun untuk perkhidmatan hutangnya," katanya.
Dr Mahathir berkata, pasaran saham semua akan runtuh apabila para pelabur, terutamanya dari luar memindahkan dana mereka ke tempat yang lebih selamat.
Selain itu, beliau berkata Putrajaya kini kekurangan wang dan telah mengurangkan peruntukan bajet bagi banyak kementerian.
"Pengenalan GST hanya menyebabkan peningkatan kos sara hidup membuatkan kejatuhan nilai ringgit lebih teruk," kata Mahathir, yang pernah menjadi menteri kewangan. - mk
No confidence vote on PM is futile, says Dr M...
Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad predicted that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will not be removed from office through a vote of no-confidence in the Dewan Rakyat.
"This is very difficult as almost all the Umno members seem beholden to him. And the opposition does not have enough members to pass the motion," he wrote on his blog today.
Mahathir's comments comes amidst Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's claims that an Umno MP was preparing statutory declarations among BN and opposition MPs to declare that they have the majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
Although Ahmad Zahid claimed that the person had repented, talks about the plot continued today following the naming of 20 BN MPs said to be involved.
Thus far, four MPs - Hasbulah Osman (Gerik), Noraini Ahmad (Parit Sulong), Rahim Bakri (Kudat) and Bung Mokhtar Radin (Kinabatangan) - have denied involvement.
Mahathir's blog post also outlined Najib's recent actions that frustrated attempts by the authorities and the Public Accounts Committee to investigate 1MDB.
Taking out detractors
This has resulted for calls for the prime minister's ouster.
"Public opinion therefore remains strong in wanting Najib to resign as PM," wrote Mahathir.
According to BN strategic communications director Abdul Rahman Dahlan, there was a "plot to criminalise the prime minister" and thus some people had to be "taken out".
"Given that scenario what would you do? You would take drastic action wouldn't you?
"Okay, take these people out first, so that things will get back to normalcy and see what will happen next.
"If you could appreciate that scenario then you would understand the flurry of action taken by the prime minister," he said in an interview published on Star Online yesterday.
In late July, Najib reshuffled his cabinet, dropping detractors and picking up four Public Accounts Committee (PAC) members who were investigating 1MDB.
Najib also removed Abdul Gani Patail as attorney-general.
Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir Mohamad has painted a grim picture should Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak continue to helm the nation.
The former premier also accused the man whom he endorsed to replace his successor as having "stolen the government"."Najib may be able to buy his way through in the next election but he will not be able to acquire funds to sustain his purchase of popularity.
"The government he leads will not be able to borrow. The country's economy will collapse.
"And the people will suffer. This is the grim picture that lies in store for Malaysians because Najib has basically stolen the government," he said in his blog post.
Can 1MDB pay debts now?
Mahathir said the economy has been reacting to the ongoing political crisis as the Ringgit has now dropped to record lows.
"The Ringgit has depreciated to below its old fixed rate of RM3.80 to US$1. It is now at more than RM4 and is likely to drop further.
"The effect is to make the country poor. Paying debts by 1MDB in US dollars would cost more. Already 1MDB is unable to even service its debts," he said.
Mahathir said the stock market all but collapsed as investors, especially foreigners, are moving their funds to safer places.
Moreover, he added Putrajaya is now short of funds and has cut budget allocations for many ministries.
"The introduction of the GST has only resulted in increasing the cost of living making the depreciation of the Ringgit more acute," said Mahathir, who was once also finance minister.- mk
Najib's actions proves substance in allegations
A Dungu Plan...
RPK talks about the existence of a Plan D- Plan Dungu. Let us say it is indeed a dungu plan. I find it strange a dungu plan appeals much to UMNO leaders. One of them is the DPM who is fast earning the description as an MP from Bangla Datuk.
The part that is true; as it now stands, the method used by Zambri Kadir the present Perak MB from BN, when toppling the Nizar government is now the law of the land.
An interpretation of the Perak method is told in the article. The MP for Bangla Datuk quickly seized upon it. He made a fiery speech. He told people of an umno leader going around securing statutory declarations and pledges to support a vote of no confidence. The story told by the MP who is also the DPM is along the lines of the RPK story.
And what a fiery speech. He will shed bood to stop peole taking power through the back door. I suppose it is beyond the understanding of Zahid Hamidi. Maybe he has not heard of a motion of no confidence. He hasn’t heard that even a democratically elected president can be impeached. He hasn’t heard of provisions in the constitution providing for the dismissal of an errant leader from office.
And what an errant leader Najib is.
You may remember the story. A leader from the opposition, of which Zambry was then, simply presented himself before the Sultan of the State and submitted that he commanded the support of the majority of the ADUNs.
The Sultan was convinced of the pleading and without even calling for the state parliament to come into session, acceded to the pleading. Zambry became MB.
Did the Sultan then inquire into whether the pledges of the alleged majority ADUns submitted through Zambry then were based on a mere belief formed on the basis of lies, innuendoes, insinuations and fabricated allegations supported by doctored evidence?
The answer was no. It was not necessary. The sultan took the pledges presented through Zambry as representing what it was- a message and plea from the ADUNs that they have lost confidence in the then sitting MB. That was it.
By law, Zambri Kadir became the legitimate MB.
Suppose now, the same legitimate means is used by some MPs to dismiss Najib, where is the illegality? Some members of his own party are also convinced that Najib is a menace to the country.
We are using the same legally sanctioned means.
Only Zahid and some people refused to hear what is being spoken by UMNO members themselves. Let’s see what is on the political landscape.
The overall feeling in Johore UMNO is that Najib should go. Will that be considered a plot to topple? A wanita UMNO leader from the Pasir Gudang Division presented a memo to Najib asking him to take leave. He must have thought it was the usual submission to help in tenders or businesses. But it was a polite way of asking him to go on permanent leave.
A wanita UMNO leader in Langkawi publicly said Najib urinated on 3.2 million UMNO members- meaning Najib deceives them. The solution is to ask Najib to take medical check on his mental state. It is a polite way of saying Najib is sick in the head.
The Tampin UMNO youth said it most clearly, Najib should resign. Najib’s staunchest sycophant Ahmad Maslan got a dressing down in his own division.
Now- can all these very loud dissent within UMNO itself be categorised as a plot to topple the government?
Accordingly, I want to ask readers this question. Simple one to even a person like Zahid or RPK.
They can understand.
If Tengku Razaleigh commands the respect of the majority of the MPs and succeed securing the necessary and sufficient constitutional endorsements- what is wrong with Tengku Razaleigh becoming PM to save the country?
The country now needs saving.
Let’s not even indulge in the term toppling. If we do, then we constraint ourselves to that term. The talk of toppling Najib and all that is boorish. Only the military topple governments.
Democrats use a more polite means-employ the instruments of democracy to remove a government and its leader. Especially one that flouts the law, indulges in corrupt practices, abuse power, embezzle money and becomes a menace just by staying on to power. The right to recall, the right of recall is an intrinsic part of democracy.
The more interesting public response I think is Zahid’s banshee-like speech about the existence of an UMNO leader making a move with the help of a number of MPs to oust Najib.
What is wrong with that? Kicking out leaders or powers to recall have been done to many leaders.
Those in Sabah are very much aware of this kind of moves. They are legal and provided for by the constitution. A vote of no confidence for example is practised in many countries having an electoral system.
So what is Zahid screaming about? He is fearfully screaming at the prospects of being the shortest –lived TPM and the exit of Najib. Everyone in Malaysia now hates Najib. So what is Zahid talking about?
On a more serious note- if the move to topple Najib is orchestrated by an UMNO man, it means UMNO is still in power. So what’s troubling Zahid?
The UMNO man will certainly retain an UMNO flavour comprising of the brightest among UMNO and the Opposition. It will be a new umno where people like caveman Zahid and his ilk will be missing. That is an UMNO likely to be supported by across the spectrum of people with decent political inclinations.
That Zahid, should welcome. It will still be led by an UMNO man.
So why is Zahid screaming incoherently? He is making an SOS call trying to save himself.
We must excuse him for his outbursts.
Doesn’t he know that Najib is not salvageable anymore? The UMNO is ostracising him. Eventually Zahid will be too if he doesn’t use any of the redeemable portion of his doctorate degree.
