Parti Gerakan tak ingin jilat juboq UMNO lagi...

No more kow-towing to Umno, says Gerakan's Mah...
In an attempt to revive Gerakan after two consecutive defeats in general elections, the aspirant for the post of party president, Mah Siew Keong, says Gerakan has to study the viability of the current BN political model.

Mah said the party must change the public perception that Gerakan "kow tows" to Umno.

"We have to clear this perception. Otherwise, Gerakan will have a very difficult battle in the next (general election) round," said Mah, who is the party acting secretary-general.

NONEMah is running for the president post in the party elections on Saturday. His running mate for the post of deputy president is Kedah Gerakan chairperson Dr Cheah Soon Hai.

In a joint manifesto revealed at a press conference today, Mah and Cheah promised to lead reforms in the BN by forming a study group on the viability of the current BN political model.

The proposed study group will include stakeholders from the public and private sectors, as well as those NGOs, guilds, chambers of commerce and other associations.

They aim to publish the reform group study report by June 2014 and table it at the BN supreme council, the two leaders said.

Mah, a former MP and deputy minister, said public perception has always been that BN is controlled by one particular party.

"This is a fact that we can't hide and we hope can discuss this with all the BN partners. True or not, the perception is that we always 'kow-tow' (to Umno)," he said.

Asked if he agreed with the perception, Mah said, "There are certain times when we agree that this is true and we hope BN can have more consultations, especially dealing with major issues."

Citing the issue of the 'Allah' controversy, Mah said it was "not very healthy" to see BN component parties saying different things to the public.

'Umno one of the reasons for our loss'

However, he pointed out that Umno was not the major factor that contributed to Gerakan's worst-ever defeat in the 13th general election.

Instead, he said Umno was "one of the problems", apart from internal organisational problems faced by Gerakan itself.

Asked whether Gerakan should stand up against Umno, Mah said, "We are not against any party but we must stand up against what is wrong.

"If our component party is wrong, we have to tell them. And if the opposition is wrong, we must tell them too."

Gerakan will hold its national delegates conference (NDC) on Saturday. The battle for the president's post is a straight fight between Mah and Penang Gerakan chairperson Teng Chang Yeow.-malaysiakini
