Minggu lalu satu pendedahan terbaru dibuat Timbalan Pesuruhjaya PAS Perak, Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, bahawa wujud kemungkinan seorang bekas menteri besar menyertai PAS.
Muhammad menjadi Menteri Besar Selangor sejak 1986 sehingga 1997.
Former Selangor MB ‘Mat Tyson’ to join PAS...
Former Selangor mentri besar Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib will join PAS this week, a senior party leader has confirmed, providing a boost to the party's aim to help keep the country's richest state in Pakatan Rakyat's (PR) hands. It is learnt that Muhammad, who helmed the state from 1986 to 1997, had spoken to PAS leaders about his intention to leave Umno and join the Islamist party today.
"Yes, Muhammad is joining us. He is close to some of our leaders for a while now.
"This is pretty significant for us, a shot in the arm despite his past sins of omission and commission," a senior party leader told The Malaysian Insider.
"I don't think he wants anything from us. He just wants to see changes in the coming elections," said the leader, adding he was made to understand that Muhammad had filled up the forms and an announcement is expected in a few days.
Muhammad's last post with Umno was as its information chief under former party president Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who stepped down in 2009.
Other sources confirmed his entry but declined comment.
"I won't disclose the name. I've sworn to protect it, but what I can say is, yes, a former mentri besar will join us.
"He called me this morning to fill up the papers. We expect him to announce it within a few days," PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub told The Malaysian Insider.
Salahuddin's statement was also carried by harakahdaily.net, the online version of the party's organ.
Muhammad's membership would add to the number of establishment figures that have joined the Islamist party and help hone its evolving image as a progressive party bidding for federal power at the May 5 polls.
Several corporate figures and senior government pensioners, including high-ranking officers such as former secretary-generals, ex-envoys as well as those from the police and armed forces have entered PAS at the end of their service.
Among them are former criminal investigation police chief Datuk Fauzi Shaari, former Land and Cooperative Development Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Nik Zain Nik Yusof and Datuk Ramli Buyong, the deputy vice-president of Felcra Berhad.
The Malaysian Insider had previously reported that the Islamist party has also undergone a socio-political change that has helped sharpen its Islamist credentials in order to stay relevant and acceptable to a plural society.-malaysian insider
