It will be a three-way contest for the Sibu parliamentary seat, with an Independent spoiling a much-expected straight fight between the Barisan Nasional and the DAP in the May 16 by-election.
Barisan Nasional candidate Robert Lau Hui Yew, popularly known as Robert Lau Junior, is contesting against Sarawak DAP chairman and Bukit Assek assemblyman Wong Ho Leng. Joining the fray is Independent candidate Narawi Haron.
Returning officer Wong See Meng announced at 10am that three nomination papers have been filed. Nomination closed at 11am but he did not say whether there were any objections filed against any of the three candidates.
Supporters from the two parties broke out in chants and songs at the end of the objection period. The BN crowd, estimated to be around 3,000 outnumbered the DAP and its Pakatan Rakyat allies, which had about 300 supporters.
The BN and DAP candidates had entered the nomination hall at the Sibu Civics Centre at 9.10am to file their papers, followed by Narawi.
The trio will be eyeing the predominantly Chinese urban seat following the death of Deputy Transport Minister and five-term Sibu MP Robert Lau Hoi Chew on April 9.
Sibu has 54,695 voters, comprising 52,158 ordinary voters and 2,537 postal voters made up of 1,910 military and 627 police personnel.
According to the electoral roll, as of April 9, Chinese voters make up almost 67% of the total number of voters, followed by Malay/Melanau (10.5%) and other Sarawak bumiputeras (22%).
