Hikayat Hang Tuah, a Malay literature classic, took centre stage at the Markaz PAS in Trong last night, and if one had read the book as a student, it would be a trip down memory lane of tales of loyalty, friendship and treachery.

Regaling the story was Parti Keadilan Rakyat's (PKR) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who had the undivided attention of the audience as he walked them through the tale of Tun Perak defying the wishes of the Melaka Sultan, who had ordered Hang Tuah to be killed. Knowing that Hang Tuah was a victim of lies and false allegations, Tun Perak took Hang Tuah away and hid him in Ulu Melaka.

In the meantime, Hang Jebat, who felt that his good friend Hang Tuah had been wrongly put to death, ran amok and killed many people. If that was not enough, he also coveted the Sultan’s favourite concubine Dang Anum, fueling the Sultan's anger. The Sultan lamented to his prime minister Tun Perak that he wished Hang Tuah was still alive as he was the only one capable of fighting off Hang Jebat.

At that instant, Tun Perak revealed that he had defied the Sultan's order and that Hang Tuah was still alive.Tun Perak told the Sultan "ampun tuanku, beribu-ribu ampun, sembah patik mohon diampun, sembah derhaka patik pohonkan" (Please forgive me,for I have betrayed you).

Hang Tuah was then sent home, and later killed his friend Hang Jebat out of his undivided loyalty to the Sultan.

"Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin is Tun Perak," said Anwar, who was greeted with applause from the multi-racial crowd packing the small compound of the Markaz PAS.

Anwar explained to the crowd that Nizar had "mohon derhaka" as he believed that he was safeguarding the rights of the people by wanting to dissolve the state assembly and seek new mandate from the people.

Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) had gone to town throughout the campaign with the derhaka issue and some in the Opposition camp worry that it may be chipping away precious votes.

Anwar also tackled the allegations that Nizar had only given land to Chinese settlers of new villages in Perak while not taking care of the Malays.

He told the crowd that land titles were also given to Malays settlers in Kampung Tersusun, and asked: "How come no one made any noise when Genting Highlands was given to a towkay? How come no one said anything when Bukit Tinggi was given to another towkay? How about the whole island in Pangkor that was given away?"

He also asked the Malays in the audience how do they expect the non-Malays to respect them when Umno is corrupt.

Anwar assured the 500-odd audience who braved the rain that PR wanted to protect the rights of all races.

Interestingly, at about the same time, Umno also organised a ceramah in a hall across the road from the Markaz PAS. It had a much smaller crowd.

At the beginning of Anwar’s speech, the loud speaker from across the road blared loudly, disrupting his speech. After a few shouts from Anwar's audience, the volume was turned down.
