Karpal Singh says,"Investigate Zaki for corruption".............

DAP chairperson Karpal Singh today handed over to the King a tape recording of Chief Justice Zaki Azmi’s alleged admission that he had bribed a court staff.

The senior lawyer handed over the audio evidence to a palace staff at 4.45pm. He was denied entry into the tightly guarded Istana Negara.

The Yang di Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, and his personal secretary are not in the country.

The veteran opposition leader said that with the evidence, the King should convene a special rulers session to sack Zaki.

"I submitted the audio tape and another letter seeking for the special Rulers sessions to sack Zaki. This is a follow-up to the letter which I gave to the King last month over the same matter.

"Zaki has not denied what I have said nor has he relayed any intention to sue me for defamation. Hence, the tape recording proves that my claim is correct. I state it again, I challenge Zaki to sue me, for what I allege," he said.

Karpal also called on the newly formed Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate Zaki under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1961.

On Feb 18, the DAP chairperson had revealed the audio recording to the media.

The recording was of Zaki's speech at a convention in Kuching last November on 'Integrity - the Catalyst of Sustainable Development'.

The recording, which is of poor quality, was said to consist of the part where Zaki talked about bribing court staff when he was a lawyer.

Ever since his appointment as the head of the judiciary, Zaki has come under constant fire from the Bukit Gelugor MP, who strongly believes that he is not fit to be chief justice in light of this open admission of having indulged in corrupt practices.

Zaki, however, has previously clarified the matter, claiming that the media had misinterpreted his comments at the Kuching conference in November.

Karpal had also lodged a police report against Zaki on Nov 13. However, till today Karpal said he had never been questioned by the police or the MACC.

Investigate Zaki for corruption

"I cannot understand why the authorities practise double standards. Here we have an allegation of corruption against Zaki, with his own voice admitting to it and yet the police and MACC have not began any investigations," he said.

"The CJ is an important and respected position in any country. If the CJ has admitted to corruption how can foreign investors have the confidence of placing their capital here?" he asked, adding that it would be wise for Zaki to step down.

Karpal also disclosed that he expects to meet with Zaki when the chief justice is scheduled to be in Penang to officiate the refurbishment of the High Courts there.

"I was invited personally by the CJ, and I will be present," he said.

Asked whether he expects fireworks, Karpal said there could be a war of words but he was a man of dignity and would not be involved in fights with the CJ.

If Zaki attends the function in Penang, it would be the second meeting between the two as Karpal and the chief justice were at the Federal court in Putrajaya two weeks ago for a case.

The Bar Council has also called on the chief justice to set the record straight.
