BN and PR all out to ensure victory in Sg. Limau...

Today is the day of reckoning for Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) in Sungai Limau, as more than 27,000 voters cast their votes for the constituency seat made vacant following the death of incumbent Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak.

Undoubtedly, the stakes are high for both parties, as a win here brings extra political mileage.

For the governing coalition, victory will cement their claim that Kedah voters have shifted their trust to BN, after a five-year administration by the PAS-led PR government which was widely perceived to have been resting on its laurels post 2008.

A loss for BN will not see the state administration change hands but the reverberations will be felt in its failure to strengthen their psychological hold in the 36-seat state legislature, in which they hold 23 seats.

For the national opposition, a loss will deny PR the platform and the momentum they need to make a run to regain administrative control of the state in the 14th general election.

Both BN and PR have focused a lot of manpower and money into the town, that is better known for its paddy fields and cheap street food, rather than politics.

BN, which wields federal power and enjoy the benefits conferred by such authority, have wasted no time in trying to get votes on their side, as reportedly some RM15 million has been promised for development in the area, including funds for fishermen, padi farmers, Felda settlers and Chinese schools.

They have gone all out to woo the 2,000-plus voters from the Chinese community as they are seen as the kingmakers, by targeting education – the community's soft spot – with an immediate on-the-spot approval of RM2.25 million for three schools to upgrade their facilities.

PR has been active as well, with their campaign touching on national issues which may sound foreign to rural ears but nonetheless, the message sent is that these matters have a bread-and-butter impact on everyday life.

Issues raised by the Opposition centered around padi, an important economic driver of the state, and the dreaded Goods and Service Tax (GST), which they claim will drive up the cost of living in an area used to low prices.

Of course, both sides spared no expense in bringing their top guns to bear, with BN fielding Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the deputy prime minister, as their vanguard in bringing BN's message of development, backed by a supporting cast of federal ministers conducting almost daily visits.

On the other side, prime minister aspirant Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is the biggest gun employed but other top names like PAS president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang and DAP's Lim Kit Siang have also made their presence felt.

In the end, the winner will be decided by whose message the electorate chooses to believe.

Will it be BN's oft-repeated mantra of development or will it be PR's "Kekal" (steadfast) promise? The odds seem to be in PR's favour due to the benefit of incumbency, but there is no ruling out the experienced and politically-seasoned BN.-theSundaily

cheers.

We do not need a business friendly government. We need a government that fgoes about its business based on the rule of law and not rule by law of the ruling party. All publically officers must be put on notice that any abuse of the law will result in the dissmissal from service without pension.

The greatest deterrant to corruption and abuse of power is knowing that you will be caught and sent to jail. Not to mention you will also lose your job.

We as a nition are dithering on this and and we will apy the price. We will be left like all other third world countries where the poor will have nothiong to eat butRICH.
