Pakatan prepared to face Anwar's jailing...

NONEThe opposition coalition is unfazed by the possibility that its de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim may be jailed when judgment is delivered in his Sodomy II trial on Jan 9. “The Pakatan leadership, not only me and Azizah but also PAS president Hadi Awang and DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang, have discussed the possible scenarios.

“If I am jailed, involved in an accident or get shot, we have discussed situations one, two and three, collectively and as a group,” Anwar told a press conference after chairing the Pakatan Leadership Council meeting at PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.

He said the Pakatan leadership has its contingency plans and was fully aware of what Jan 9, when the verdict in his second sodomy trial will be delieverd, may bring about.

“If someone in Umno thinks that by destroying Anwar, Pakatan will be stalled, the opposite will instead take place. We will go on, for it is the policies of Pakatan that will lead,” assured Anwar.

Anwar also condemned the alleged brutal police put down of the university students sit-in for academic freedom outside Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris in Tanjung Malim on Jan 1.

'Imposing restrictions on the mind'

"They imposed restrictions on the mind, which interferes with free discourse and are against the tradition of scholarly practice," he said.

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang, who was present, agreed with Anwar and called on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to intervene and give his guarantee that such a "deplorable" thing would not continue.

Also present was PAS president Hadi Awang, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and other top brass from Pakatan.

The verdict on Anwar's second sodomy trial, which could even see him imprisoned, has raised concerns on the future of a post-Anwar Pakatan.

His magnetic personality is said to be the only glue holding the often fractious Pakatan together.

Some argue that Anwar’s absence when imprisoned after the first sodomy trial actually helped to springboard the opposition alliance into a higher political arena - which may happen again, even to the tipping point that may see the coalition winning Putrajaya in the next general election

Pakatan hadapi kemungkinan Anwar dipenjara
