Wikileaks: Tiada data mengenai saya -Anwar

Stashed cash: Allegation started by Umno bloggers, says Anwar

A Barisan Nasional MP, who alleged in Parliament that Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic) stashed away RM332 million in 20 offshore bank accounts, could face censure for having misled the House.

The reason - Liang Teck Meng(pix below, left) appeared to have relied on a claim made in an Umno blog rather than in a Wikileaks cable as he told Parliament yesterday. Liang’s allegation was given widespread coverage in the mainstream media today, with the Umno-owned press leading the charge against Anwar.

PKR’s deputy whip Sim Tze Sin said the party would refer the Simpang Renggam MP to the Committee of Privileges unless he retracts that allegation today. He said that there was no such information about Anwar and the bank accounts in the Wikileaks cable.

Liang said that he was standing by the allegations made against Anwar, adding that he had handed over documents to the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim.

"I will leave it to the government to investigate the bank accounts," said Liang. His research indicated that the 20 accounts belong to one person – Anwar.

Predictably, Anwar was an upset man today.

"There is no basis in these allegations. We have checked and there is nothing like it in Wikileaks.

It was started by Umno bloggers and played up by Utusan," he said at the Parliament lobby.

Anwar said that Liang appeared to have delivered a "prepared speech" by Umno to discredit him.

"There is no decorum and no ethics in Parliament. But to be fair, I could see that not all BN MPs agreed with this."

Anwar also said that since BN was fond of "relying" on Wikileaks, why didn’t it pursue allegations made about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, namely his alleged links with Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu.

Anwar also promised to take action against pro-BN media, which highlighted the allegations but did not carry his denial.

Opposition politicians have won several defamation cases against Utusan Malaysia and other mainstream media in the past 12 months. Often, it was a case of the media publishing and reporting unsupported allegations or lies. Sometimes, the newspapers did not bother to obtain a comment from the Opposition politician.-malaysian insider
