Arrival of 'Santa Clause' Najib worries Pakatan....

As Sarawak braces for the arrival of Prime Minister and BN chairperson Najib Abdul Razak tonight to start his six-day campaign, DAP has raised the alarm.It claims that the party and Pakatan Rakyat are in 'danger' of being swamped by the resources available to the ruling coalition.

"From today, we will start facing a tough challenge. Not only it is difficult for us to defend against the prime minister, but also the resources he brings.

"If we cannot defend (our position), DAP's hold on the state assembly will be reduced from the current six seats," party election strategist Liew Chin Tong (left) told a press conference in Sibu.

Liew claimed money politics and other irregularities have become rampant in Meradong, Kuching and Sibu and will only intensify with the prime minister's visit and affect the opposition party's chances in the rural and semi-rural seats.

Also at the press conference was DAP vice-chairperson Tan Kok Wai, who said that the premier will leverage all his ministers and resources - including the 1Malaysia non-governmental organisation - to campaign for BN in Sarawak.

The NGO has been very active distributing goodies and organising dinners in recent by-elections. "This might not have any impact at urban areas, but it will be an attractive for the rural and semi rural people," said Liew.

According to the party strategist, the rural and semi rural seats in danger for DAP include Meradong and Repok in Sarikei and Bawang Assan and Dudong in Sibu, which have a significant number of rural Chinese and Iban voters.

DAP therefore hopes that outstation voters, especially those who work in West Malaysia or overseas, come back to vote on April 16.

No mere state election

The Bukit Bendera MP also stressed that election is no more a state poll but has acquired the importance of a general election.

"This is no more a fight between DAP against other political parties, but it is a fight between Sarawakians and the prime minister."

Najib will fly to Kuching tonight and start his six-day tour tomorrow. He will be visiting all three major cities - Miri, Sibu and Kuching - that have seen unprecedented numbers attending opposition rallies over the past few nights.

These are considered 'black areas' by BN where component party Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) is most at risk.

Najib will also be visiting smaller towns such as Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, Betong, Engkilili, Sebuyau, Sadong Jaya, Bau, Bario, Sungai Baram, Lawas and Limbang.
