Pakatan launches manifesto promising goodies...

NONEPakatan Rakyat has launched their manifesto for the
Sarawak election, promising a slew of goodies and cash for the people if they form the state government.

Coming just a day after Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud launched BN's, Pakatan leaders launched the 10-point manifesto simultaneously in Sibu and Kuching.

While the BN manifesto can be seen to be vague and offering no details, Pakatan listed their promises right down to the minute details of their populist policies which they intend to implement, and many of them intend to put cash right into the people's pockets.

“We pledge a grant of RM200 for every child of Sarawak origin who begins Year One education. “In appreciation of their contribution to the state, we promise to give all Sarawakians above 60 years old who are residents in the state annual welfare assistance of RM600 and to set up community support systems within every local government authority for their continued well-being,” read just several sub-points of their manifesto.

There have been similar policies of giving cash away as 'welfare funds' to the people by the Pakatan Rakyat state governments of Selangor and Penang. Following aDAP trademark, Pakatan also promised free WiFi throughout Sarawak.

Targeting perennial land problems in Sarawak, they had promised to unconditionally renew expiring leases for another 99 years. They also promised to form a Native Land Commission to investigate land grab cases of Native Customary Rights land and to issue grant or leases to those lands.

Battling corruption

NONEBut top on their priority list is the fight for good governance.

“We promise good governance premised on proven international principles of competency, accountability and transparency which will create and promote a clean administration of the state's welfare, equal business opportunities and bring back national pride, patriotism and self esteem in the public sector.

“We pledge a fair distribution of the state's wealth and riches, endeavouring to end the practice of favouritism, corruption, cronyism and nepotism,” pledged Sarawak DAP chairperson Wong Ho Leng in reading out the manifesto in Sibu this afternoon.

Apart from that, they also pledged to set up an independent commission of inquiry as well as an ombudsman to investigate allegations of corruption by BN politicians and their cronies.

“BN said they want to make Sarawak the richest state by 2030. We are already the richest state in natural resources but we are still financially the fourth poorest state. “What can they do in 19 years that they have failed to achieve in 30?” asked Wong, in reference to Taib's tenure as chief minister.

Other points in the manifesto themed 'Change 4 Sarawak' is as follows.
  • Freedom of belief
  • Good governance
  • Land reform and native land commission
  • Eradication of poverty
  • Federal state relations
  • Greener Sarawak
  • A fair deal for all Sarawakians
  • Culture and Education
  • Rights of women and those with special needs
  • Investment into the future
