Anwar: ISMA,Perkasa tak melenting pun bila UMNO/Utusan Meloya kutuk Sultan Johor...

Ketua Pembangkang, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim mendakwa pihak berkuasa agama Islam tidak hormat upacara penganut agama lain. Gambar fail The Malaysian Insider.

Why are Isma, Perkasa and A-G mum over UMNO,Utusan’s criticism of Johor Sultan, asks Anwar...

Anwar Ibrahim today questioned why Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) and other right-wing organisations have made no noise regarding Umno and its mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia's criticism of the Johor Housing and Real Property Bill 2014.

"If Umno and Utusan do it, it is okay. If we do it, immediately they would take action and Isma would make a lot of noise," he said.

He was referring to Umno leaders and the paper's open questioning of the bill, which initially accorded the Johor Sultan with an administrative role in the housing board.

However, the bill was passed in the Johor state assembly yesterday with amendments removing the sultan's powers.

"What the late Karpal Singh said about the sultan (for which he was charged with sedition) was far lighter than what Utusan and Umno have done," noted Anwar.

He said that any criticism or discourse on the bill and the role of the sultan in it should be done “with decorum”.

“Follow decorum and follow the Malay tradition. Do it politely. Don’t be so rough with the criticism,” he said.

“When Karpal was charged, they were so rough with their criticism of him,” he added.

"What Karpal Singh said about the Sultan was way more mild than the criticisms by Umno," Anwar (pic) told a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.

Anwar was referring to the former Bukit Gelugor MP who was fined RM4,000 after being found guilty for uttering seditious words against the Sultan of Perak at the height of the constitutional crisis in 2009.

“Where's Isma now? Where’s the attorney-general?” he asked.

Karpal, who died in a car accident on April 17, was alleged to have said that the removal of Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin as mentri besar of Perak by Sultan Azlan Shah could be questioned in a court of law.

Anwar also asked why was there no action by the Attorney-General against Utusan who had been very vocal in questioning the Sultan's role in the Bill.

In its Sunday editorial, Utusan's Awang Selamat, the pseudonym for the daily's collective editorial team, had questioned whether the BN-led Johor government was so weak it needed to involve the Sultan in its administration.

It also said it would not answer any royal summons to appear before the Johor Sultan.

The controversial Bill had met with fierce opposition from various quarters including former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, legal experts, and former Johor Corporation (JCorp) chief executive officer and president Tan Sri Muhammad Ali Hashim.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak also said any enactment must be in line with constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy in the country.

The Bill was tabled and passed yesterday at the Johor state assembly with amendments that either limited or removed the Johor Sultan’s power in the proposed housing board.

The amendments no longer give the sultan the power to determine the remuneration or allowances of board members in the Johor Property and Housing Commission (JPHC).

The sultan’s power to direct any person to investigate the books, accounts and transactions of the board has been removed, and he no longer can direct the board to be wound up and dissolved.

The board no longer has to submit to the ruler the accounts, an estimate of the expenses the following year or a report of its activities in the preceding year. Nor does it require the sultan’s approval to establish a corporation. Instead, all those powers are vested solely in the state authority.

Similarly, the sultan can only appoint members of the board on the advice of the menteri besar. The sultan’s approval for the appointment of the director is also on the advice of the menteri besar.

Also, either the sultan or the menteri besar can decide to revoke a member’s appointment, as opposed to the sultan having the sole authority to do so.- mk/tmi

Anwar: Islamic authorities 'arrogant with power'...

Anwar Ibrahim today criticised religious authorities in Selangor and Penang, saying their actions are bordering on "arrogance of power".

"This is a dangerous signal to Malaysians, not only to non-Muslims, but also Muslims who are level headed and don't want to be perceived as arrogant," he told a press conference in Parliament today.

"Do not be perceived as insulting other races," he warned.

The Selangor Islamic Department (Jais) had gatecrashed a Hindu wedding after being tipped off that the bride was a Muslim while in Penang, the body of a Muslim convert was seized from a Chinese funeral.

Anwar also suggested that the religious authorities are taking such actions due to “pressure from fanatics”.

“I’m pretty sure the authorities obtained such information before the wedding (in Shah Alam). If so, you discuss and come to an amicable solution before the wedding. Don’t tell me they got the information when the wedding is ongoing,” he said.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guang Eng, who was also at the press conference, said that actions such as the one by religious authorities don’t “do Malaysia’s international image any good”.

“I only want to request, please do not give this perception as though the rights of non-Muslims don’t exist at all,” he said.

He said that he is going to meet the family of the deceased Chinese lady whose remains were taken away by the Penang Islamic authorities when the Chinese funeral was about to take place.

“From what I understand, the IC has not been changed at all,” he said.- mk
