Pelatih PLKN dibunuh...

Pelatih PKLN Muadzam Shah mati dibunuh...

NS trainee believed beaten to death at camp...

An 18-year-old National Service trainee from Temerloh has died, believed to have been beaten with a blunt object at the Pelangi camp, in Pahang.

Muhammad Suhaimi Norhamidi was unconscious when found by his friends in a bathroom at midnight with bruises at the back of his ears, Berita Harian quoted the police saying.

"As soon as he was found, the unconscious victim was sent to the Hospital Muadzam Shah, where he died," Rompin's deputy superintendent Johari Jahaya reportedly said.

Police are investigating the incident further.

His father, Norhamidi Bakar, 46, said he last saw his son when he sent him away to camp a few months ago.

He added that Suhaimi had ambitions to join the police force.

Suhaimi was said to be healthy and had exercised with other National Service Training Department trainees earlier.

Police have arrested three other trainees aged 17, 18 and 21, at the Pinggiran Pelangi camp, to facilitate murder investigations.

The victim, Muhammad Suhaimi Norhamidi, was found unconscious on the bathroom floor of the camp at 12.04am and pronounced dead on arrival at Muadzam Shah Hospital.

Suhaimi had a bruise behind the ear, believed to have been caused by a blunt object.

The initial post-mortem report revealed that Suhaimi had died of brain haemorrhage.

Pahang Criminal Investigation Department deputy chief superintendent Mohd Haris Daud said the three trainees in custody were from Johor and Pahang.

He said initial investigations revealed that the victim had angered several trainees when he cut queue during breakfast on Sunday.

This resulted in a fist fight between the victim and the three detained trainees several hours later.

Mohd Haris said the fight erupted again at about 11.30pm and 30 minutes later, the victim was found unconscious on the bathroom floor.

There have been 22 deaths since the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) began in December 2003 with all the deaths due to drowning, viral infection and other medical reasons.

This is the first time a murder has been reported in a PLKN camp. In 2004, a 17-year-old trainee was raped by a camp instructor, who was later sentenced to 12 years in jail.

The PLKN was started by Putrajaya to foster friendship between youths of certain ages from different races and ethnic groups. It is also to address concerns that the country's various communities were becoming increasingly isolated from one another.-malaysian insider
