EC should explain how PR holders been accorded full voting rights....

Leaders from opposing ends have called on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's administration to investigate claims that a permanent resident (PR) holder has been accorded full voting rights.

Politicians are aghast that a PR holder going by the name Mismah had her status "upgraded" to full citizenship within a matter of hours after Malaysiakini ran an expose on her inclusion in the electoral roll of the Ijok state constituency.

Penang DAP chairperson Chow Kon Yeow said the "shocking" revelation raised too many questions and doubts surrounding the validity of the nation's electoral rolls.

Chow said if the Election Commission (EC) could not even guarantee the sanctity and security of voter data, there would be no use in introducing its proposed biometric identification system.

"If it was bad enough a non-citizen is registered as a new voter, it is now absolutely mind-blowing that this very same person has had her status changed from PR to citizen in a matter of hours after the story broke," he said in a statement today.

"Presumably, this would validate her status as a voter, but this has taken away what little bit of confidence people still have in the inviolability of the electoral rolls."

Suhaizan Kaiat, the democratic reform and mobilisation chair of PAS Youth, said their party wing had detected similar cases of Indonesian PR holders being registered as voters in nearly all states.

'Country teetering on a dangerous precipice'

Suhaizan said they had anticipated that a situation such as the sudden upgrade of Mismah's citizenship status happening, and this only proved that the country was teetering on a dangerous precipice, with citizenship status being "toyed" with by interested parties.

"A Royal Commission of Inquiry must be formed immediately to investigate the National Registration Department and the EC in connection to this shameful issue," he said.

MCA Federal Territories youth chief Chew Lian Keng was also taken aback by the alleged switch in Mismah's citizenship status, demanding for an investigation and that the EC explain itself.

However, Chew described the issue as an "error" in the electoral rolls, stating that he was sure the government would not descend to making such a "simplistic and despicable" tactic.

"Only an idiot will use such a method(Yes, an idiot like JPN or EC or UMNO). I think it is a technical glitch but the relevant authorities have made a grave mistake," Chew said, while also raising concern that the opposition would capitalise on the issue.
