Now Shazryl denies accusing Anwar, claims it was "people" and "reporters"...

Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, one of the notorious Datuk T trio, is now trying to U-turn on his accusations that it was Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim who was captured on film having sex with a female sex worker.

"I am not accusing Anwar, but people and you reporters who have viewed it (were the ones who) judged (Anwar)," Malaysiakini reported Shazryl as saying.

He had gone to the Kepong police station to answer questions relating to his oath-taking rite at a Sentul mosque on Friday and had been waylaid by reporters on his way out. Nonetheless, Shazryl's apparent turnaround failed to soothe Anwar's supporters, who derided the reliability of his words.

"He has proven himself such a dishonest character, we are just wondering what is his next step. In fact, we would call on all Malaysians to wake up and watch the latest Umno drama unfolding. It looks like the final chapter is about to be played out, so let's watch closely what new and disgusting tricks they will get up to," PKR vice president Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.

In late March, Shazryl and his Umno colleagues - former Malacca chief minister Rahim Thamby Chik and Perkasa treasurer Shuaib Lazim - had booked a conference suite at a posh hotel in downtown Kuala Lumpur to screen the video, which they claim they had 'discovered'. They demanded that Anwar and his wife, PKR president Wan Azizah, resign from politics within a week or face the consequences of the tape being made public.

Not me, I did not hire the sex worker

Initially, the trio tried to hide their identities but PKR investigators revealed that Rahim, the head of government agency RISDA, had made the booking through his aides while Shuaib, the father-in-law of Rural Development minister Shafie Apdal, had paid the bill.

Forced to confess, they brazened it out - claiming full responsibility when speculation rose that they were just the front-men for Prime Minister Najib Razak and other members of the Umno elite including former premier Mahathir Mohamad, who want Anwar 'destroyed' before the next general elections were called. But the plot went awry, especialy when close-ups leaked onto YouTube showed the facial features and physique of the man were different from Anwar's.

Public suspicion of a massive conspiracy also grew when the Inspector General of Police Ismail Omar refused to arrest or to charge the trio despite their having admitted to possessing and screening the pornographic material. In Malaysia, this is an offense punishable by up to 5 years in jail. Meanwhile, Shazryl denied he had hired the sex worker in the video.

"A lot of this, I cannot reveal much as this is still under investigation," he told reporters on Wednesday, declining to give further details.

Made-in-Malaysia

Initially, Shazryl had said he 'discovered' the tape. He has also previously admitted to being the second man in the video, who had accompanied the Anwar-look-alike to the hotel room where four cameras were used to shoot the sex scenes. But he denied having a hand in the making of the video. Yet, today, he insisted the video was made in Malaysia and not Thailand.

"The recording device and tape was made in Malaysia. It does not have the (Thai) writings when I retrieved it," he said.

In the first snippet of the 21-minute video leaked onto YouTube several weeks ago, there was a white strip at the bottom of the footage with the words 'Phaholyothin Road, Bangkok, Thailand 10400, Copyright 2011' in Thai script. However, reporters who saw the full-length tape in late March, have said there was no such strip although in its place was a time stamp. In the second snippet recently leaked onto YouTube, the time stamp was also present.

Omega watch and a crossroad for the BN

Shazryl, also drew attention to an Omega watch he claims the sex worker had tried to steal. He told reporters that the DNA sample he save to the police several weeks ago was possibly related to the watch. “I think it has something to do with the watch. I was holding the watch," he said.

Whatever are Shazryl's motives and those of his political masters, it is clear the entire episode has backfired badly on the BN. Instead of pressuring Anwar, it has generated a new sense of injustice doled out by the Umno elite against him and family.

Not only Muslims, but Malaysian society as a whole, are shocked at the way Prime Minister Najib Razak has tried to shove obscene politics down the public's throats. Umno-controlled media have front-paged stills of the scantily-clad couple in the tape in pre and post-sexual intercourse embraces.

"There are basically two ways to go. Step on the pedal and increase the sex video drama against Anwar. Or stop, repent and accept the punishment the Malaysia public will mete out. Which do you think the Umno elite will choose given their past record," said Tian.
