Angry teachers tick-off Muhyiddin...

Primary school teachers in Sarawak and Sabah have voiced their disappointment at the new promotion methods for teachers which was announced by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak in conjunction with Teachers Day celebrations on Monday. Describing the announcement as a rehash of the ‘guru cemerlang’ (teachers’ excellence) awards, a visibly upset Malaysian Teachers Union Sabah/Sarawak Teachers vice-chairman William Ghani Bani said the teachers unions including secondary teachers and headmasters unions had met last night to discuss an immediate action to be taken.

He said they would write to the Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, on behalf of the 160,000 headmasters and primary school teachers, conveying their concerns on the issue. Ghani, who is also Sabah/Sarawak Teachers’ Union chairman, said he had spoken to Muhyiddin immediately after the national-level Teachers Day celebration at the Borneo Convention Centre here.

“What was announced on Monday was for graduate teachers in schools only. Graduates in office and in the Education Ministry are not included in the announcement,” he said. He said the teachers were so angry that many walked out from the Teachers Day celebration, while Muhyiddin was explaining the promotion opportunities.

“After Muhyiddin finished his speech, I told him personally that we are not happy with his speech. “He asked me why and I told him because the package is only meant for graduate teachers from secondary schools,” said Ghani.

Unhappy teachers

Ghani said the union was of the view that primary school teachers were the ‘most important’ in the teaching hierarchy because they literally deal with the students’ formative years in school.
“To us, primary school teachers are the most important teachers as they are the most effective and active teachers.

“When they are not happy, they will not function (teach) properly. Secondly, no teacher wants to be a headmaster because he only receives, including allowance, RM150.00.

“A headmaster’s allowance is only RM100.00,” he added.

Ghani said Muhyiddin, having heard his explanation, told him not to worry as he would call them for a meeting. “Never mind if Muhyiddin does not call us because we will take action,” Ghani said.

On Monday Najib said the new promotion methods for teachers would take effect from Jan 1, 2012. He said that under the new system, teachers will be categorised into four levels, namely regular teachers, senior teachers, high calibre teachers and teaching luminaries.

“The creation of the tiers will enable the teachers climb to higher grades based on their performances.

“Through the calibre teachers and teaching luminaries concepts, teachers in the teaching and learning field will have the opportunity to go to grade 54 within 25 years of service as long as they can meet the necessary requirement as set by the Education promotion Board,” Najib had said.

Guru MARAH, Keluar Ketika Muhyiddin BERI PENJELASAN

Only had Najib and Mahyuddin did their homework properly, guru ini tak kan memberontak...

cheers.
