BN menang kerana bijak memanipulasi sentimen terutama orang melayu.

Dec 31 rally organisers to bring grenades, claim cops...

Police today issued a stern warning that individuals or groups would be charged for holding an anti-price hike protest on New Year’s Eve at Dataran Merdeka this Tuesday.

Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Amar Singh Ishar Singh (left) said police would not hesitate to detain parties attempting to spark unrest under the Penal Code and the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

He said intelligence found several groups and non-governmental organisations (NGO) would be involved in the illegal gathering to show their dissatisfaction against the government and to create chaos.

"Kumpulan Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup (Turun), Jingga 13, Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia as well as Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia were believed to be involved in the gathering," he told a media conference at Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters today.

He added that the illegal assembly organisers would also be setting up camps around Dataran Merdeka and would be bringing various weapons, including grenades and gas masks to stir up a commotion.

In this regard, Amar Singh advised the people not to participate and support the assembly as it is against the law.

He said to date, police have received 588 reports nationwide in protest against the assembly to bring down the government.- Bernama

Plot to topple gov't a fairy tale, says Kit Siang...

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has described police warnings of a plot to topple the government on New Year's Eve as a "fairy tale".

He said in a statement today that the government and police were doing a disservice to the nation by fuelling this conspiracy and making Malaysia appear like a “basket case country” on the verge of political and economic collapse.

Authorities have linked a planned anti-price hike rally on New Year's Eve at Dataran Merdeka to an alleged plot to overthrow the government.

Lim blamed inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar for fuelling the conspiracy when he warned participants of the alleged protest to topple the government can be charged with carrying out activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy that carries up to 15-year jail sentence.

"...If there are Malaysians who want to demonstrate their grievances and opposition to the string of price hikes, whether sugar, petrol, power or toll, the government must accept such human rights of freedom of expression without tarring them with the brush of being anti-national elements or traitors," he said.

Lim queried whether the conspiracy was cooked up in a bid to distract controversies away from the government.

"Is it because the Najib administration has many skeletons like the secret funding of Perkasa that ministers and police chiefs are trying to distract public attention with fairy-tale stories about New Year's Eve conspiracy to 'topple the government'?" he said.

Pakatan not involved

Lim said Malaysians were not convinced of the conspiracy and neither was the opposition involved in any such "plot".

"I can confirm that no New Year's Eve programme, including the alleged 'topple government' rally plot, was ever raised or discussed at any Pakatan Rakyat leadership or DAP meetings.

"Whatever being planned for New Year's Eve has nothing to do with Pakatan Rakyat or the DAP," he said.

Mohd Azan Safar (left), who heads Turun, the student group behind the anti-price hike protest, was arrested on Dec 23 on grounds of attempting to commit activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy but police were denied a remand and he was subsequently released.

Azan has vowed to see the protest go on Tuesday night, and accused the government of cooking up the ‘topple government’ plot in the bid to divert attention from pressing bread-and-butter issues.-malaysiakini

Muhammad Ali Hashim serahkan kembali 3 darjah kebesaran negeri Johor...

5 Disember lalu, Bernama melaporkan, Jumaah Majlis Diraja Johor meminta  Muhammad Ali Hashim memberi penjelasan berhubung artikel tulisannya “Menuntut Hak, Menebus Masa Silam”.

Muslim business leader denies offending royalty, returns state medals to Johor

Does Najib care...

During the GE 13, dubbed as ‘the mother of all elections’ in Malaysia both BN and Pakatan pledged a list of promises should they be voted into Putrajaya.

Now seven months after the general elections, BN rules as the government and the rakyat are waiting for all election promises to be fulfilled.

On Sept 2 , prime minister Najib Tun Razak announced a petrol price increase and to appease the rakyat he called it a subsidy reduction .

In truth, the RON95 and diesel price was increased by 20 sen.

RON95 increased from RM1.70 to RM1.90 per litre and diesel increased from RM1.60 to RM1.80 per litre.

The chain reaction was felt almost immediately with the price of goods increasing over the following months.

On Oct 25, Najib announced another ‘surprise gift’.

Terming it as rationalisation, (Najib is given full credit for popularising this term amongst Malaysians), he abolished the remaining 34 sen sugar subsidy.

Sugar price was increased from RM2.50 to RM2.84 per kilo (round-up to RM2.85).

On Dec 2, the Energy, Technology and Water minister Dr Maximus Ongkili announced another rationalisation, informing all that the electric tariff will be increased by 14.89 percent or 4.99 sen kilowatt per hour.

Beginning Jan 1, 2014, electricity will be priced at 38.53 sen per kilowatt per hour.

The term ‘rationalisation’ may look ‘sweet’ but in reality it is ‘bitter’ as the end results are actually price increases.

Next on the cards are road toll hikes expected to be rolled out any time next year.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Abdul Wahid Omar who is an economist and banker told expressway users that they are free to use roads without tolls if they are unhappy with the proposed toll hike. His statement angered the rakyat, further.

There are rumours circulating over the social media that more increases are expected in 2014. Although not verified or confirmed as yet, there are speculations that rice, road taxes and driving licenses are on the list for price hikes as well as another petrol price increase slated for next year or in 2015.

The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) is said to be reviewing the LRT and Monorel charges but so far nothing has materialised.

Among ordinary Malaysians the current discussions and topic of conversation be it in coffee shops or on the social media is “does Najib care about the people?”

Even Umno division and branch leaders are asking “does Najib care about the 14th GE?”

The fear felt by these grassroot Umno leaders and members is whether Umno will be able to survive the 14th general elections after all the unpopular moves made by the current BN government.

Najib as prime minister and finance minister with numerous advisers surrounding him surely must have considered all these factors before proceeding with such unpopular announcements.

If the rakyat can predict that these price and tariff increases can kill Umno in 14th general elections, Najib must be more aware.

So why was Najib brave enough to allow such ‘burdens’ be dished out to the rakyat despite the promises he made before the GE13 such as reducing toll charges in stages and raising the quality of life for Malaysians?

Najib knowns that Malaysians have such short memories, they make noise for a few weeks or months and then all is forgotten.

There were price increases during former prime minister Abdullah Badawi’s tenure and even after the 12th general election (after Mac 2008).

The people were angry but after a month or two, life went back to normal and people forgot.

By the next general election in four and half years time, Malaysians will have forgotten all these price and tariff increases especially if Najib announces a few goodies and hands over some ‘sweets’.

Six months before the 14th general election Najib will start to hand out ‘goodies’ again and the hardcore BN supporters and fence sitters will be happy to vote for BN again.

A few pro-Umno grassroot leaders that FMT spoke to said that BN is in danger of losing at the 14th general election if Najib does not stop the price hikes, as this time the rakyat are smarter and the people will not be bought over by the sweet promises made by the BN government.

“They have been ‘hit’ (terkena) once by the government and I don’t think they can be fooled again next time,” said a young Umno branch leader from Seremban.

A quick check by FMT at a few Felda and traditional Malay kampung areas where recent price and tariff hikes does not affected them. The sentiment of the Malays regarding Najib and the government is still positive.

There are slight grumblings and unhappiness amongst the villagers, but in general support for BN in these so called Umno fortresses is still unshaken.

“Yes, the prices of goods have gone up. What to do? At least our country is safe. No war. You go to Indonesia, Myanmar or Bangladesh, the situation is much worse,” said Sharulnizam Azhar from Felda Serting, Jempol.

As far as Najib is concerned he does not see any major backlash from the people, especially from the Malays in the rural and Felda areas, Umno’s strongest fortress.-fmt

Apa yang special sangat dengan Perkasa...

Kenapa bantu PERKASA saja, soal NGO Melayu lain...

Selepas mungkir janji, gomen Najib takut “digulingkan”...

Tahun 2014 sudah pastinya bukan berita gembira bagi majoriti rakyat Malaysia berpendapatan rendah kerana kenaikan kos sara hidup yang bakal mereka hadapi.

Semasa berkempen menjelang Pilihan Raya 2013 lalu, Barisan Nasional melalui “Manifesto: Menepati Janji, Membawa Harapan” memberikan pelbagai janji indah seperti mengurangkan kos sara hidup.

Why for Perkasa only, ask other Malay rights defenders...
With the funding sources of Perkasa disclosed, two Malay-Muslim NGOs, Martabat Jalinan Muhibbah Malaysia (MJMM) and Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma), are crying foul over the government favouring the right wing Malay movement over them.

The two NGOs, which are similarly involved in defending Malay and Muslim rights in the country, said they, too, want recognition and some of these funds.

MJMM president Abdul Rani Kulup Abdullah said they suspected that Perkasa had government backing, but it had not been made this clear before.

"Now, with it revealed that Perkasa has government funding... I feel it's not fair if only Perkasa alone gets the funds," Rani said in a text message to Malaysiakini today.

"We are moving along with our own pocket money... so I urge the government to carefully review again the funds for NGOs."

MJMM has been actively policing the social media, such as Facebook, and has filed several police reports against those allegedly insulting Muslims or Malays online.

It is also among the NGOs that in October called on police to investigate DAP MP Tony Pua for labelling Utusan Malaysia and the Registrar of Societies (ROS) as 'anjing Umno' (running dogs for Umno) in a online posting.

MJMM is also protesting against price hikes and higher cost of living, Rani said.

Isma: It’s not Umno’s generosity

Earlier this week Perkasa admitted that it had received funding from agencies such as the National Security Council (MKN), National Civics Bureau (BTN) and the Special Affairs Department (Jasa), which come under the Communications and Multimedia Ministry.

Isma is similarly unhappy that  government funds are not handed out more evenly.

"Umno cannot bring it up as if it is their generosity (to fund Perkasa)," Isma's president Abdullah Zaik Abdul Rahman (right) said.

"Until now, I have not seen the government truly acknowledge the role of NGOs in building up the community, especially Malay and Islamic NGOs."

Abdullah noted that the government has shortchanged Islamic NGOs as they were given much lesser funds than non-Islamic NGOs, despite the bigger contribution to society by Islamic NGOs.

Isma made the limelight recently for tearing at human rights group Comango at the UN review in Geneva two months ago.

It has also called for Malaysia to take a stand on the Islamic form of human rights and to ignore the more liberal international standards.

To avoid favouritism, Isma recommended that the government enshrine funding to NGOs as a constitutional right, so that governments would no longer hand  them out at their discretion.

"For me, the role and credibility of the NGOs are ruined when they are managed according to the whims of the ruling party," Abdullah Zaik said.-

MP to query gov't about its funding for Perkasa...

PKR Women’s wing chief Zuraida Kamarudin has questioned why Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s government is giving taxpayers’ money to Perkasa, which is alleged to be a racist non-governmental organisation (NGO).

“Since Perkasa has admitted that it has received funds from the government, we want to know where the money comes from and how much,” she said at a media conference in Kuching.

“I will raise a question in the next sitting of Parliament to find out the truth of the matter, and we want to know also why the government is funding a racist and extremist NGO,” said Zuraida, the MP for Ampang.

“If it is true that Perkasa receives funds from the government, then this must stop immediately,” she added.

azlanShe pointed out that Perkasa seemed to be a very racist NGO and it always got away with what its leaders said.

“The government has no control over Perkasa and its leaders, and they can say anything under the sun without fear of being arrested,” she said.

“Why is the government not taking action against them, we want to know?” she asked.

On the issue of sexist remarks by BN leaders, Zuraida said it was silly for them to make such remarks against women.

“Lately PM Najib and Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor were  the latest BN leaders who allegedly uttered sexist remarks against women.

“While Najib wants MCA to take Viagra, Tengku Adnan, when talking about toll hikes, compared properties to women who, when they put on make-up, the price is high.

“I think it is unbecoming of ministers to say such things. I think it is very silly,” she said, pointing out that Tengku Adnan apologised after being pressured by women groups.

‘Abang Johari should also apologise’

She said that likewise Sarawak’s Housing and Tourism Minister Abang Johari Openg should apologise to DAP women elected representatives for his “silly” remark during his winding-up debate in the November sitting of the state legislative assembly.

When challenged by Violet Yong (Pending assemblyperson) and Christina Chew (Batu Kawah assemblyperson) to join them to find out the plight of vendors at the Kubah Ria market, Abang Johari said to Violet, “Belum kawin kah, say masih ada tiga kuota” (are you married, I still have quota for three more wives).

Zuraida said that Abang Johari should not have used that kind of remark to a woman representative in the Dewan.

“We are against such remarks, and we may want to take action against anyone even if he comes from our party,” she said.

“All these male elected representatives should go for gender education so that they would be gender sensitive.

“They cannot treat women as sex objects,” she added.

Zuraida said that in Parliament the women MPs from Pakatan Rakyat had managed to push through a clause that there should not be any sexist remarks in the Dewan.

“Whoever makes such remarks will have to face action,” she added.

Meanwhile the BN government is undermining itself by funding a "disruptive" group such as the Malay supremacists Perkasa, and this has warded off many voters, including urban Malays, Gerakan said today.

NONECalling the Malay rights group's work as the opposite of BN's objectives, the party's Youth chief Tan Keng Liang (left) urged the government to clarify why key government institutions were involved with a number of Perkasa programmes.

Earlier this week Perkasa admitted that it had received funding from agencies such as the National Security Council (MKN), National Civics Bureau (BTN) and the Special Affairs Department (Jasa), which comes under the Communications and Multimedia Ministry.

"It's suicidal for BN to fund Perkasa because its activities are not helping the government... it's creating a bad image," Tan told Malaysiakini.

"If it is true, it has to be reviewed... the government has to come out and clarify the situation, or more rumours will spread."

Tan's views were echoed by Gerakan vice-president Dominic Lau who also texted his view that the party "strongly opposed the government aiding Perkasa."

"Gerakan's stand on Perkasa has been very clear all this while, which is we are against extreme racist party/organisation," he noted.

He said that the government should ensure that all NGOs, regardless of political inclinations, are fairly funded but must also make sure no fund goes to NGOs that are not promoting social unity and justice.

Similarly, MCA, another BN component party questioned Perkasa's qualification.

Citing her past experience as a deputy minister, MCA woman division chief Heng Seai Kie said that only NGOs that provide community and social services and effectively help the government received such financial aid.

Perkasa self-image in sorry state

"We feel sorry to say that with Perkasa's current leadership - all their statements, activities and programmes - they create a negative impression in public...they have been labelled as racist propagandists and have nothing to do with government," Heng told Malaysiakini over the phone.

Heng, however, said that she hoped Perkasa can change, since it is now in the limelight.

"I hope Perkasa can learn from the public response when they know about the funding. As a responsible NGO, Perkasa should revise their programmes and statements and they way they carry themselves. They should be grateful for government support and stop creating racial-friction," she said.

"If they don't change, the government has a right to stop funding them."

When asked if Perkasa was helping BN to win the Malay electorate  over as recently claimed, MCA's Heng also disagreed.

"I don't think so. If they are helping to unite the Malays, then in the last general elections, Pakatan Rakyat wouldn't have gotten so much support from the Malays," she said.

"Unity is called for as we move towards Vision 2020 with PM's 1Malaysia spirit, Perkasa is doing just the opposite."-malaysiakini

Pengarah Pilihan Raya Pemuda PAS Mohd Sany Hamzan memberitahu Malaysiakini, tindakan ahli keluarga mendiang bertujuan menggambarkannya mendian sebagai pejuang PAS sejati walaupun beragama Hindu.

PAS supporter's coffin shrouded with party flag...
The family of a Bukit Raja PAS Supporters Club member decided to mark her dedication towards the party by draping her coffin with the party's flag.

This bizarre incident took place yesterday and a photograph of several individuals carrying the coffin of M Letchumany were posted on Meru state assemblyperson and former Selangor PAS chief Dr Abdul Rani Osman's Facebook page.

Some of Abdul Rani's Facebook followers expressed concern about how the photograph might affect the party's image.

"It is not that I disagree with (the use) of PAS' flag, but, I'm worried that might say (those in the photograph) are PAS zealots," wrote Facebook user RiyRyokona Fipperz.

According to Selangor PAS Youth chief Mohd Sany Hamzan, the family had placed flag on her coffin in recognition of her services to the party as an active PAS supporter.

"This shows that PAS is accepted by everyone including the non-Muslims," he said when contacted by Malaysiakini.

Mohd Sany said this does not affect the sanctity of Islam as the party flag is just a symbolic gesture.

"It is not against Islamic teachings and I do not think it would create a negative impression on the party," he said.

- TMI

Explain the need to sell our assets, says Rafizi...

The government's unplanned sale of some RM5.6 billion in state assets, as pointed out in the latest World Bank report, is a distress signal, reiterates PKR director of strategy Rafizi Ramli.

Rebutting the Finance Ministry's statement before the Christmas holidays that he was irresponsible for raising a non-issue, the Pandan MP said the sale may have been disclosed, but it was still a bad move.

Rafizi said PKR was therefore pushing for an urgent parliamentary session to discuss mismanagement by the government, which has not only led to the asset sale but also the recent slate of unpopular price hikes and subsidy withdrawals.

"When you see the government resort to asset disposal, it is a sign of desperation," Rafizi told reporters at the PKR headquarters today.

"The subtle message of the World Bank report is that Malaysia is running out of options to secure our treasury position."

He also slammed the Finance Ministry, headed by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, for "trivialising" a billion dollar sale as a regular finance action.

Controversy arose over a page from the World Bank report ‘Malaysia Economic Monitor: December 2013' which stated that Malaysia had raised RM7.4 billion from non-tax sources despite spending more on subsidies in 2013. These non-tax sources, it said, included “RM1.4 billion of proceeds from asset sales and RM4.2 billion from the securitisation of government mortgages”.

Rafizi said the Finance Ministry has not denied the asset sale but merely stated that amount raised were from proper land sales and securitisation of housing loans given to civil servants and that this was a regular government action.

“If we allow the federal government to do this unchecked, it’s a recipe for disaster,” Rafizi said. “I believe the World Bank wouldn’t take the risk to point this one out, if it is not a big issue.”

Equating mortgage sales to a desperate person's visit to the pawn shop, he warned that the Finance Ministry’s move may come back to bite the people later.

‘One of the reasons for the subprime crisis’

“Even though the ministry has practised this since 2004, such securitisation of government mortgages was one of the reasons for the subprime crisis which hit the United States in 2007-2008,” he warned.

In that crisis, the US Federal Reserve created a property bubble through easy borrowings and low interest rates. But when interest rates rose sharply, many borrowers started defaulting on housing loans and sparked a global banking crisis. It also resulted in the biggest bankruptcy in US history when Lehman Brothers, a 150-year-old finance house, suddenly collapsed.

Rafizi gave a scenario where with the rise in costs of living, Malaysian borrowers may also fall back on their housing loans, and questioned if investors would then start seizing civil servants’ mortgaged properties for sale.

He said he suspects that the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) were the key buyers of the government securities. This would add even more risks to the financial system as a whole as the EPF was already the biggest investor in the Malaysian stock markets.

More worrisome, Rafizi said, was that the government asset sale may have simply gone to cover careless spending. He noted that the World Bank report had stated that the government found itself short of RM14.3 billion, compared to the approved budget in 2013.

He also noted that the government had asked Parliament to approve a supplementary budget in September.

Meanwhile, Rafizi said that PKR has neither sanctioned nor discussed a mass youth rally in Dataran Merdeka, planned on New Year’s Eve aimed at protesting against the rising cost of living.

“This is not a PKR programme,” he said. “But the same principles and demands of the people are shared by PKR.”

He said the government should however not block the people from wanting to go to downtown KL to celebrate the New Year together and at the same time raise a valid issue.

Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup (Turun) head Muhamad Azan Safar said yesterday that a demonstration at Dataran Merdeka on Dec 31 would go on despite a police bid to investigate them.- malaysiakini.

Stage invader at Xmas open house nabbed...

A commotion broke out at the national level Christmas day open house event in Penang resulting in the arrest of a senior citizen and a local activist.

Angel Teh Onn Liew, who is in her 50s, was arrested after trying to approach the VIP stage twice to hand over a thick document to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

Teh was dragged away after finding her way to the stage the first time for questioning by the police.

However, she managed to find her way to the stage a second time, resulting in her being handcuffed and brought to a mobile police station.

Meanwhile, Persatuan Mukabuku Pulau Pinang chief Salleh Ismail, who snatched away Teh's document after she approached the stage the second time, was also swiftly handcuffed and whisked away by the police.

Prior to being arrested, Teh told reporters that she had wanted to inform Najib and Lim about her plight, allegedly involving how her land was taken away from her by illegal means.

The open house which was attended by both Najib and Lim was held this afternoon in Padang Kota Lama.-malaysiakini
