In this respect, it was also incumbent upon Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to make good his promises of reform and clean government, PKR vice-president N Surendran said today.
"This can be done by ordering Nazri to make a full declaration of his assets," Surendran added in a statement.
He also described as "highly suspicious and disturbing" Brickfields OCPD Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid's swift exoneration of Nazri's son, Mohamad Nedim, in the incident at a posh condominium in Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, as reported by some newspapers on Saturday.
Surendran said the police in their rush to clear the senior Umno minister's son of wrongdoing have only raised more suspicions and doubts as to what really transpired at the condominium on the night of March 20.
"Are the police trying to protect the reputation of Umno and the government?. The people are entitled to a thorough and impartial investigation into this incident.
"Wan Abdul Bari's statement is inconsistent with earlier reports that Nazri's son and his bodyguards personally assaulted the security guard.
"It has also been reported that there are CCTV recordings of the entire incident. What do the CCTV tapes reveal?" he asked.
Surendran also alleged that it has become standard practice for the police to rush to the defence of BN leaders or their relatives who were suspected of crimes.
Pointing to the National Feedlot Corporation case, the PKR vice-president said just before the Umno AGM in December 2011, deputy inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar issued a statement clearing the NFC of wrongdoing, even though investigations had not completed.
It was only due to public pressure, he said, that Women, Family and Community Development Minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil's husband was charged with CBT over the NFC fiasco.
"This pro-BN conduct of the police leadership has resulted in massive public loss of confidence in the police force. We call upon the inspector-general of police to form a special investigation team to further investigate this assault case involving a top minister's son.
"The AG must also exercise his powers to direct the police to carry out further investigations," Surendran added.
On Friday, Malaysiakini had exclusively reported that Nazri's son and bodyguards were involved in the assault of a security guard supervisor at the posh condominium in Mont Kiara.
The case has been classified under Section 160 of the Penal Code for causing an affray in a public place, for which the punishment is six months' jail or RM1,000 fine or both.
However, Wan Abdul Bari told The Star on Saturday, a day after Malaysiakini's report, that Nazri's son was not involved but his bodyguard and a security guard.
"This is a minor case. We have already completed investigation. I do not know why and how another person (Mohamad Nedim, left) was dragged into this.
"It is a clear-cut case involving a bodyguard and a security guard,'' The Star reported Wan Abdul Bari as saying.
Several legal eagles told Malaysiakini that they could not understand why police classified the case as an affray in a public place when it took place inside a gated condominium.
They also raised questions on the police reports lodged, since visitors could also be considered to have tresspassed a gated area if they do not want to take an entry pass.
It is also learnt the condominium management may have been pressured to close the case, since the police had marked this a matter of affray and there was the possibility of both sides being charged- malaysiakini
