Apa orang Kuale mau...

Kalau sudah sampai Kuala Kangsar, tidak sah kalau tak pekena cendol dan laksa. Jadi, usai penamaan calon  Pilihanraya Kecil Kuala Kangsar semalam, saya berkesempatan meronda-ronda bandar kecil ini mencari laksa dan cendol, sehari sebelum berpuasa, eloklah tu.

Apa istimewanya laksa di Kuala Kangsar dengan laksa di tempat lain? Beza laksa di sini ialah bahan yang digunakan. Barulah saya tahu, menurut Kak Su, laksa Kuala Kangsar dibuat dari tepung gandum dan bukannya tepung beras seperti laksa yang lain. Jadi, rasanya pun sedikit berbeza.

“Laksa ni akak buat sendiri, tak sama dengan laksa putih tu. Akak guna tepung gandum, campur garam dan minyak sikit, lepas tu uli,” kata Kak Su.

Menurut ibu berusia awal 50-an ini, beliau sudahpun berniaga laksa di Kuala Kangsar sejak 15 tahun lalu. Perniagaan laksa yang diusahakan mendapat sambutan baik dari masyarakat setempat mahupun pelawat dari luar.

“Sehari akak boleh jual dalam 30 kilo,” ujarnya kepada saya.

“Saya rasa kak, masa pilihanraya ni kena tambah banyak kilo lagilah,” sambut saya mencelah.

“Eloklah tu, bila lagi nak macam ni, jarang-jarang pilihanraya, satu Malaysia tumpu kat sini,” sampuk temannya Kak N sambal memotong bawang. Kak Su pula sibuk melayan pelangan yang baru duduk.

Saya tersenyum mendengar ngomel Kak N, mengangguk. Sebagaimana peniaga-peniaga kecil yang lain, mereka gigih berniaga. Sesekali sempat juga saya bertanya pendapat mereka mengenai politik.

“Adik ni dari NGO kan? “ soal Kak N bila melihat saya mencatit sesuatu di buku nota kecil saya sambal memerhati t-shirt yang saya pakai yang tertera sloga “Never Surrender” yang merupakan t-shirt yang dibikin komuniti Pangrok Sulap.

Saya tidak pula menjawab ya atau tak, saya beritahu kak N yang saya datang untuk buat sedikit tinjauan pendapat masyarakat tempatan sempena PRK Kuala Kangsar. Mungkin jika saya cakap saya dari parti Roket, mereka akan lebih ‘segan’ nak berbual.

“Akak rasa sebagai peniaga, apa masalah yang akak hadapi? Bagaimana dengan majlis perbandaran?” soal saya.

“Dengan majlis memang tak ada masalah, janji ada lesen. Harga barang naik!” pantas Kak Su jawab.

Kata Kak Su, dalam tiga bulan lalu, sekilo laksa dijual RM12 sahaja, sekarang harganya sudah RM13. Kenaikan ini termasuklah harga cili burung.

Sambil kami bersembang, pelanggan lain yang ada turut mendengar celoteh kami bertiga sambal tersenyum-senyum.

“Dulu adalah cuba tanam tapi tak jadi,” seloroh Kak Su. “Tapi itulah, kita ni orang biasa, komplen macam mana pun, kalau nak naik, dia naik,” sambungnya.

“Tapi yang komplen tu tak daftar mengundi…” sahut Kak N.

Saya ketawa mendengarnya. Kak Su dan Kak N nampaknya memang peduli dengan isu-isu semasa. Siapa kata orang kampung tak peduli? Mereka tahu dan mereka faham apa yang berlaku.

“Okay kak, akak rasalah, pilihanraya kali ni, calon macam mana akak akan pilih?” soal saya. Sengaja saya tidak mahu bertanya mereka akan pilih parti mana. Sebab, sebelum ini, saya pernah dijawab responden “undi adalah rahsia”.  Jadi, kurang elok pula kalua ditanya apa pilihan mereka.

“Kita nak calon yang boleh buat kerja,” jawab Kak Su.

“Kali ni kita ada empat penjuru. BN, PAS, Amanah dan Bebas. Akak rasa macam mana dengan calon-calon parti ini?” soal saya.

Kak Su dan Kak N bagai tak menyerah melayan soalan-soalan saya. Cuma saya agak terkejut bila Kak Su jawab beliau kurang yakin dengan calon wanita.

“Kenapa pula kak?” saya kehairanan.

“Calon wanita mudah dipergunakan, bos suruh sain, dia sain…” jawab Kak Su selamba.

Secara peribadi, pandangan Kak Su itu agak mengejutkan saya dan stereotaip. Mungkin orang lama sepertinya lebih faham keadaan politik di kawasannya atau beliau pernah melalui pengalamannya sendiri.

Tambah Kak Su lagi, dia lebih senang dengan calon yang boleh menegur bos dan tidak sekadar ‘yes bos’.

Saya mengangguk-angguk. Begitu dengan Kak N, senyum mengangguk. Semangkuk laksa habis saya hirup. Saya tambah sekilo lagi untuk dibawa pulang makan bersahur.

Sambil mengucapkan terima kasih dan selamat berpuasa kepada Kak Su dan Kak N, saya kira, Pilihanraya Kecil Kuala Kangsar ini mungkin memberi sedikit kejutan walaupun dalam pusingan pertama ini, kita melihat bendera BN dan PAS lebih banyak dari Amanah.  Hanya ‘orang Kuale’ sahaja tahu apa yang mereka mahukan. –Roketkini.com

Can a thief’s hand be cut off in Islam...

If PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi thinks that crime can be likened to diabetes and that amputating a thief’s hand can be likened to cutting off the gangrene-infected limb of a diabetic patient to save a life, then he is exactly the sado-masochistic Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland who was obsessed with decapitation.

Hadi’s baying for blood must stop, for it is feared if Hadi has his way, we may just have an army of amputees, whose hands were cut off for the smallest theft. 

It must be remembered that under the strict laws of the true Islam according to verified texts and scriptures, it is almost impossible to amputate a convicted thief’s hand. 

According to traditions of the Prophet Muhammad, verified scholars of Islam, Islamic texts and scriptures, there are 19 preconditions for amputating hand of a thief. 

If any of these preconditions are not met,the hand should not be cut but still the thief has other punishments. Also, the cut of hand should be from end of fingers and the palm of hand should always remain, says islam.stackexchange.com, a website which has experts on Islam answering questions on the religion.

The 19 pre-conditions are:

1. The thief must be an adult. Abdullah Ibn Sinan relates the following tradition from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.):When a minor child steals for the first and the second time he is forgiven. If he does it for the third time he is issued a strict warning and beating. If he persists in his crime, the tips of his fingers are slightly cut and if he repeats the act, some more of his fingers are cut away. (Even then, before that is done, there are the conditions below which have to be looked at.)

2. The thief must be sane. So if an insane person robs, his hand is not amputed. He may be suitably warned and scolded.

3. The thief must not have resorted to stealing under duress, if he had been compelled to do so, the penal code is not applied.

4. The stolen thing must be something that is worth owning. Hence, if ones freedom is restricted it cannot be called a theft.

5. The value of the stolen object must not be less than one-fourth misqal of pure gold. One misqal is equal to eighteen grams. One-fourth misqal is four-and-a-half gram.

6. The son or the slave of the thief must not own the thing that is stolen. So if a father steals from his son, he is not punished.

7. Eatables stolen during the times of famine do not make the thief liable for having his hands cut. It is narrated from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) that he said: In the time of famine and draught the hands of a thief are not cut off for stealing edible items like bread and meat etc.

8. If a soldier participates in a raid and steals from the plundered goods obtained in war before they are distributed, he is exempted from the punishment.

9. If one of the parties to a transaction steals a property and claims that it rightfully belongs to him, he is not liable to be punished.

10. If a person is accused of theft, but before his theft is proved to the judge, he pays the owner the value of the goods, he is not penalised. Similarly, if a son steals from his father but before the verdict is issued the father dies, the son is not punished, as stolen goods now comprise his inheritance.

11. If the use of the stolen things is Harām (e.g. wine or pork), there is no penal action against the robber.

12. If the thief claims that he had not taken a particular thing with the intention of stealing it, and the judge considers otherwise, there shall be no punishment for it.

13. The object should have been stolen from a place where the owner’s permission is required to enter. If a theft takes place in a public mosque or public bath, the thief does not have his hand amputed.

14. The thing should have been stolen from a secure place.

15. The thief must himself take away the stolen goods from their proper place. If one takes out the thing from its safe place and another one takes it away, neither of the two can be punished for theft. If a thief removes the stolen object and loads it on his animal, or gives it to an insane man or a minor child for taking it away, the latter is not penalised. This is because the animal, the insane person and the child are mere carriers of the goods.

16. Severing of the hand is a punishment for theft. Theft implies that someone takes away something without the knowledge of others who later realise that the thing is missing. Hence if a person forcibly loots some goods from its owner, he is not punished for theft.

17. If before a theft can be proved, the thief goes to the judge and repents and promises not to steal in future he is saved from the punishment. 

18. For a theft to be proved, two just witnesses should have seen the thief stealing. (Just witnesses must be practising Muslims, pure from crime and has no record of lying.)

19. If the owner takes back his goods or allows the thief to keep them before the matter is reported to the Qazi and does not press for a penalty, the thief is not punished.

With all these conditions, Hadi and his followers’ obsession with amputation have shamed Islam as a religion full of blood and gore. This is the same way meat-eaters are portrayed as cave-men clubbing a poor animal to death and then tearing off raw flesh dripping with blood - when in reality it is not so.

Even if Hadi's Hudud has all the 19 pre-conditions, it is feared that there will be much injustice, judging from the overzealousness of Hadi and his followers to amputate merely to show their might. - Zakiah Koya

Malaysian Journalist: Najib Cracked Down on Free Speech to Limit 1MDB Fallout...

A senior Malaysian journalist who quit his job at a leading newspaper said Prime Minister Najib Razak’s government has cracked down on freedom of speech as it tries to limit the fallout from a graft scandal surrounding a state investment fund.

Mustapha Kamil, the former group editor of the English-language New Straits Times, which is controlled by Mr. Najib’s ruling party, took a rare public stance by saying that an increasingly “authoritarian” stand by the government toward media was the reason he quit the newspaper in April. Mr. Mustapha initially remained quiet after stepping down, but last week posted the reasons for his action on his Facebook page—an unusual act in the closed world of Malaysian state media.

A journalist’s responsibility is “first to the truth,” Mr. Mustapha wrote. Investigators in at least seven countries are probing 1Malaysia Development Bhd., or 1MDB, a government investment fund Mr. Najib set up in 2009 to boost growth. Some investigators have said they believe $6 billion has gone missing.

Hundreds of millions of dollars originating from 1MDB allegedly moved into Mr. Najib’s private accounts via a web of offshore entities, and was spent on politics, jewelry and clothes, The Wall Street Journal has reported, citing investigators and bank-transfer documents.

Mr. Najib’s government has banned newspapers it controls—which include the New Straits Times and the larger-circulation Malay-language Berita Harian and Utusan Malaysia newspapers—from covering the 1MDB story, Mr. Mustapha said in an interview.

News releases from 1MDB denying stories in the Journal and calling into question its sources would sometimes come to the New Straits Times from the prime minister’s office with orders to run the statements in their entirety, according to Mr. Mustapha. The newspaper did as they were told.

“There are specific instructions to use this or that story, and we’re not allowed to question,” he said. “Before 1MDB, there was more freedom for us to do our job.”

Mr. Najib and the 1MDB fund didn’t respond to questions about whether the government pressured media over coverage of the scandal. In the past, Malaysia’s government has justified curbing media freedom to report on 1MDB, citing the need to maintain public order.

The prime minister has said the money he received in his account was a political donation from Saudi Arabia, and most of it was returned. 1MDB has denied wrongdoing and says it is cooperating with the probes.

Mr. Mustapha acknowledged that the New Straits Times, which is controlled by Media Prima Bhd., a company owned by Mr. Najib’s ruling United Malays National Organization, always faced some curbs on free expression.

Those limits, though, have narrowed considerably in the past year since Mr. Najib began to fight allegations about taking money from 1MDB, he added.

“It was not this frequent and not this authoritarian,” Mr. Mustapha said of previous media controls.

James Chin, a Malaysian academic who heads the Asia Institute at the University of Tasmania, disagrees that the level of pressure on state-run media from the government has increased under Mr. Najib. He said the government of former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad regularly closed newspapers.

But the 1MDB scandal has rolled on for so long—hurting the ruling party’s image—that it is starting to cause fissures between Mr. Najib and editors from newspapers that should support him, Mr. Chin said.

Some independent news outlets, like the Edge Media Group, have also faced pressure from Mr. Najib’s administration after reporting critically about the 1MDB scandal. Last year, the government said it suspended The Edge Weekly and The Edge Financial Daily for two months due to the company’s reporting on the scandal. The Malaysian Insider, another online news site owned by the Edge group, said it was blocked by the government in March and decided to shut down amid falling advertising revenue.

Mr. Najib’s administration has cracked down on criticism of 1MDB in other ways. Last year, a former ruling-party politician was arrested on charges of economic sabotage after he called for an investigation into 1MDB. He was later released on bail.

Mr. Mustapha said on Facebook that the Pulitzer Prize committee’s decision in April to cite The Wall Street Journal as a finalist in international reporting for its coverage of 1MDB was a factor in his decision.

Muhammad Ali died Friday at a Phoenix-area hospital where he had spent the past few days being treated for respiratory complications, a family spokesman confirmed. He was 74, reported NBC News.

“Ali had suffered for three decades from Parkinson's Disease, a progressive neurological condition that slowly robbed him of both his legendary verbal grace and his physical dexterity. A funeral service is planned in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.

“Even as his health declined, Ali did not shy from politics or controversy, releasing a statement in December criticising Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States. "We as Muslims have to stand up to those who use Islam to advance their own personal agenda," he said.

Muhammad Ali, the lyrical heavyweight showman who thrilled the globe with his sublime boxing style, unpredictable wit, and gentle generosity – especially later in life – died on Friday. He was 74. Ali, the former Cassius Clay, was not just an athlete who embodied the times in which he lived. 

He shaped them. His conscientious objection to the Vietnam war, and reasoned rants against a country fighting for freedom on the other side of the globe, while its own black citizens were denied basic rights of their own, energized a generation. 

Ali refused to serve in Vietnam, was convicted of draft evasion, and stripped of the heavyweight crown he won from Sonny Liston in 1964.

Imagine, for a moment, a 21st-century athlete who could command an audience with presidents and the pope, the Dalai Lama, Castro, Idi Amin and Saddam Hussein. Ali might have been the most famous man on earth. Disease robbed Ali of his speech late in life.

But his peacekeeping trips, fundraising efforts for Parkinson’s research, and support for UNICEF and the Special Olympics and many more charitable organizations were more powerful than his poetry. His characterization of Joe Frazier, for example, as a “gorilla” was sophomoric, even if it did rhyme with “Thrilla” and “Manila.”)

“Muhammad Ali was not just Muhammad Ali the greatest, the African-American pugilist; he belonged to everyone,” poet Maya Angelou wrote in the 2001 book Muhammad Ali: Through the Eyes of the World. “That means that his impact recognizes no continent, no language, no color, no ocean.”

Ali was also a reminder of what boxing has lost. Ali’s classic fights, like “The Rumble in the Jungle” and the “The Thrilla in Manila” were masterpieces of the form. Muhammad Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., in Louisville, at 6:35 p.m. on Jan. 17, 1942. His father, Cassius Sr., was a sign painter “with minor artistic talents and a major taste for gin,” according to Sports Illustrated. His mother, Odesssa, worked as a household domestic. Clay’s ancestors were slaves on the plantation of his namesake, a Kentucky politician who was Lincoln’s minister to Russia. 

 

He had an Irish great-grandfather, named Abe Grady. But no trace of white blood could shield young Cassius from the slights of segregated Louisville. For example, Clay said that when he was 8 or 9, an old white man harassed him while he played with friends near the railroad tracks, dragging him by his collar and shouting “shut your mouth, little n—-r” as Clay resisted (another man, the story goes, interceded and saved Clay from further harm).

Kuala Kangsar mesti mengundi tolak GST, protes 1MDB...

Pilihanraya kecil Parlimen Kuala Kangsar merupakan platform terbaik bagi rakyat Perak menunjukkan bantahan terhadap segala dasar membebankan serta penyelewengan yang berlaku dalam pemerintahan kerajaan Barisan Nasional, kata Ahli Parlimen Batu Gajah, V. Sivakumar.

Jelasnya, PRK Kuala Kangsar perlu dianggap sebagai satu referendum untuk membuktikan rasa tidak puas hati rakyat terhadap skandal 1MDB dan pelaksanaan cukai barangan dan perkhidmatan (GST) yang amat menghimpit kehidupan rakyat.

“Jika BN menang dalam pilihanraya kecil ini, kerajaan akan menganggap rakyat bersetuju dan tidak peduli tentang pelepasan wang berbilion ringgit dalam skandal 1MDB.

“Malah, kerajaan juga akan menganggap ini sebagai satu pengiktirafan rakyat terhadap cukai GST yang dikenakan selama ini, dan kemudian mendorong kerajaan menaikkan lagi kadar GST pada masa depan,” jelasnya dalam satu kenyataan.

Sivakumar yang juga Timbalan Pengerusi DAP Perak meminta pengundi Kuala Kangsar memilih calon Pakatan Harapan dari Parti AMANAH, Dr. Ahmed Termizi Ramli yang merupakan seorang profesor dalam bidang fizik nuklear untuk mewakili mereka di Parlimen.

Katanya, Dr. Ahmed Termizi merupakan seorang anak tempatan yang menonjolkan potensi cemerlang dan telah banyak berkhidmat untuk negara melalui pelbagai pencapaian serta penemuan dalam bidang akademik.

“Walaupun ramai mengatakan pilihanraya kecil ini bakal melihat pertembungan tiga penjuru, namun kita harus ingat bahawa perlawanan sebenar ialah antara Pakatan Harapan dan BN.

“Ia merupakan satu perjuangan menentang kezaliman dan ketidakadilan yang semakin teruk berlaku di negara kita. Rakyat Perak perlu mengambil peluang ini untuk membetulkan segala yang tidak betul dalam negara kita dengan mengundi calon Pakatan Harapan,” ujarnya.

Dr. Ahmed Termizi, 61, merupakan seorang profesor lulusan Sarjana Muda Fizik dari Universiti Leeds (1975) dan Sarjana Muda Kesihatan dan Keselamatan Radiologi dari University of Salford (1980).

Beliau kemudiannya menyambung pengajian dalam bidang Diploma Fizik Pengionan dan PhD dalam bidang Fizik Perubatan dari Universiti Swansea, Wales (1984).

Menghabiskan persekolahannya di Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR), Ipoh, Dr. Ahmed Termizi bersara sebagai Profesor Gred B di Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) dan kini bergiat aktif dalam politik.

Bapa kepada sembilan cahaya mata itu merupakan Ahli Jawatankuasa Biro Antarabangsa dan Biro Pilihanraya AMANAH Nasional, Ahli Jawatankuasa Biro Politik AMANAH Perak serta Naib Ketua AMANAH Kuala Kangsar selain aktif dalam Pertubuhan IKRAM Malaysia.

Sejak 1987, beliau telah mengendalikan 19 projek penyelidikan, menghasilkan 11 buku ilmiah, 97 kertas jurnal antarabangsa dan 79 kertas pelbagai persidangan berkaitan dengan bidang fizik.

Dr. Ahmed Termizi yang merupakan Ahli Senat UTM itu juga lantang membantah pembinaan loji nadir bumi Lynas yang membahayakan penduduk di Gebeng, Kuantan.

Atas sumbangan besarnya kepada negara, beliau dianugerahkan Pingat Darjah Paduka Cura Si Manja Kini (PCM) oleh Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibuddin Shahdan serta pernah dipilih melaksanakan tugasan di bawah Agensi Tenaga Atom Antarabangsa.

Pada pilihanraya kecil Parlimen Kuala Kangsar pada 18 Jun ini, Dr. Ahmed Termizi bakal berentap dengan Datin Mastura Abdul Yazid daripada BN dan Dr. Najihatussalehah Ahmad daripada PAS.

Hujan batu di Kuala Lumpoq...

Hujan batu yang jarang berlaku serta banjir kilat melanda beberapa kawasan di ibu negara petang tadi.

Kejadian kira-kira 6 petang itu dilaporkan menyebabkan trafik sesak selain beberapa bangunan dan rumah kediaman di ibu negara mengalami kerosakan.

Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) turut melaporkan menerima aduan sebanyak 35 kes pokok tumbang di sekitar ibu kota.

Pengarah Jabatan Penguatkuasaan DBKL, Mustafa Mohd Nor berkata skuad penyelamat dan tren tunda telah dikerah bagi melakukan kerja-kerja pembersihan.

Selain itu beberapa jalan utama iaitu Jalan Duta, Jalan Bangsar, Jalan Pantai Baru dan Lebuhraya Lingkaran Tengah 2 arah Tasik Bandar Selatan, Jalan Genting Klang dan Taman Melati, Gombak turut dilapor terjejas.

Menurutnya seramai 82 anggota pasukan Skuad Penyelamat DBKL telah dikerah ke semua lokasi tumpuan yang terjejas akibat banjir kilat.

"Daripada jumlah itu, 50 petugas trafik diarah mengawal keadaan trafik, 20 lagi menyelamat mangsa yang terkandas manakala 12 ditugas mengendali kren tunda," katanya kepada Bernama.

Sementara itu Ketua Pusat Gerakan Operasi Bomba dan Penyelamat Kuala Lumpur, Samsol Maarif Saibani berkata terdapat kejadian tiang elektrik tumbang di Lebuhraya Sungai Besi menghala ke Bukit Jalil sekali gus menyebabkan kesesakan lalu lintas di kawasan berkenaan.

Beliau berkata kerja-kerja mengalihkan tiang itu sedang dijalankan selain kawalan trafik dilakukan pihak polis.

Sementara itu warga ibu kota yang kebanyakannya sedang dalam perjalanan pulang ke rumah turut berkongsi pengalaman masing-masing dan gambar kejadian melalui media sosial.

Phantom voters and ghost candidates...

GE-13 was one of the strangest in our election history. Independent observers complained about phantom voters, voters who had risen from the dead and were around 200 years old. Now, BN has adopted a new election strategy, in which they nominate ghost candidates to stand for election. What next? Governing by remote control?

The former MP for Kuala Kangsar,  Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il-Anuar Wan Ahmad, was killed in a helicopter crash last month.

Standing in the by-election, to represent Umno/ BN, is his 55-year-old widow. Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid.

The new BN election strategy, mentioned by the Deputy PM, Zahid Hamidi, excuses Mastura from public view, because she has to observe a period of mourning. How convenient!

BN will broadcast her speeches, but this is akin to cheating. It is similar to an examination candidate who avoids the rigorous oral and written test, under exam conditions, but instead, gives the examiner a perfect pre-prepared copy of her work.

With the unlimited resources of Umno available, all the topics from education to employment, commerce to child-care, can be covered by experts in their respective fields. Mastura needs only to read a prepared text.

No! Doesn't BN realise that the electorate wants to assess the candidate in the flesh, to field questions and see how she performs under pressure. They want to see how she reacts to controversial topics, how she fudges, and how she interacts with the rakyat.

Accepting the candidacy makes Mastura fair game for criticism. A wannabe politician must accept the rough with the smooth.

Most normal working women are not granted the favour which has been accorded to Mastura, to disappear from public life, and observe the mourning period of 40 days.  If women in both the private sector or public life were to excuse themselves to mourn, industry, commerce and the education sectors would grind to a halt.

Despite the claims that Umno has consulted Muslims scholars and the divisive Perak Mufti, Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria, who have excused Mastura's absence during campaigning, their reasons are not acceptable.

Excusing Mastura from public campaigning, will not show the public that she is pious. It just shows that she belongs to an elite group of people, who can escape the realities of providing for a family and avoid the responsibilities of their job.

How many companies could afford to lose several working days, from each female employee, whose husband has died?

Mastura may have apologised for her absence, but she has already shown that she is different from the rakyat. Isn't one of the concepts of being an MP, to show that you empathise with the rakyat?

So, why is Umno using emotional blackmail for this by-election? They appear not to have any other suitable candidate, and perhaps hope to secure a win, from the sympathy vote, especially as Mastura is a widow.

Conveniently, Umno also said that Mastura need not be present during the nomination period, because they say that the Election Commission (EC) rules do not stipulate this requirement.

The ludicrous Zahid claimed that Mastura is very experienced in national politics, because she mixes around in the constituency, when her husband was the Bukit Chandan state assemblyman from 2004 to 2013, and the Kuala Kangsar MP after GE-13.

It is like saying Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak's spouse, the self-styled, First Lady of Malaysia (FLOM) is a suitable candidate for MP or PM, just because she fraternises with the rakyat, by virtue of her husband's interactions with the public.

It will not be the first, or last time, that emotional blackmail has been used in an election. Linda Tsen, the widow of the former Batu Sapi MP, Edmund Chong, was the BN candidate for the by-election in 2010.

It is deplorable of Umno to stoop this low, and use Mastura for emotional blackmail. Of course, they will deny this strongly. Why can't they let Mastura grieve in peace? Why use her for political purposes? - Mariam Mokhtar

PAS tawan Pulau Pinang PRU-14 nanti...

Ketika membahaskan ucapan dasar presiden PAS hari ini, perwakilan Pulau Pinang mendakwa pembangunan di negeri itu sejak beberapa tahun lalu mencerminkan penghapusan etnik secara halus.

Yaakob Omar yang mengulangi sentimen perwakilan Pemuda PAS negeri semalam, menuntut undang-undang tanah rizab Melayu yang baharu diwujudkan di negeri itu.

Menurutnya, pemilikan tanah orang Melayu di Pulau Pinang susut daripada 28% pada 2010 kepada 20% dalam masa singkat lima tahun sahaja.

Walau pun hanya dengan satu kerusi,  Ketua Pemuda PAS negeri Pulau Pinang, Mohd Hafiz Alias begitu angkuh dan sombong berkata bahawa parti itu mampu merampas Pulau Pinang demi mengembalikan kepentingan Melayu.

Jika PAS dapat memerintah negeri tersebut, kini dikuasai DAP bersama PKR, isu pemilikan tanah Melayu dapat diselesaikan.

Lantaran itu, seorang fesbuker Rosly Yusof, telah membelasah Mohd Hafis dengan komen-komen berikut:

1) Cakap pakai kepala lutut... Orang Kedah dan Perak paling ramai mencari rezeki dan tinggal di Pulau Pinang..... Ketua pemuda Pas Pulau Pinang pun mai dari Kedah menumpang hidup mewah di Pulau Pinang lagi mau sembang... Yang miskin tu pengikut pas macam dia ni saja. 

2) Pak Lawak sembang kencang nak tawan Pulau Pinang... Esok aku tunjuk kat hangpa fakta sejarah depa hilang deposit semua kerusi yang berlawan 3 penjuru dengan BN dan DAP.  Bukan kata dengan BN dan DAP depa hilang deposit malah dengan calon bebas pun depa hilang deposit.. 

3)  Ini adalah fakta sejarah keputusan pilihanraya yang Pas masuk bertanding 3 penjuru dengan BN dan DAP di Pulau Pinang sejak tahun 1986 hingga tahun 1995 di mana Pas bukan saja kalah dengan BN malah Pas juga tidak mampu mengatasi DAP dan lebih memalukan lagi PAS sentiasa hilang wang pertaruhan pada setiap kali pilihanraya di Pulau Pinang.  

Di parlimen Permatang Pauh iaitu parlimen yang pernah Pas menang bukan saja Pas kalah dengan hilang deposit malah di kawasan yang mejoroti melayunya lebih 70% ini pun Pas gagal untuk menyaingi undi yang di perolehi oleh DAP.

Tapi yang lebih menarik sekali dalam fakta sejarah ini ialah di Dun Sungai Acheh yang pada PRU lalu Pas bertegas mahu bertanding 3 penjuru dengan PKR atas alasan Sugai Acheh adalah Dun tradisi mereka sejak dulu juga hilang deposit dengan hanya mendapat undi sebanyak 860 undi saja dari lebih 10ribu yang keluar menggundi.

Selepas PRU 1995 Pas bukan saja tidak berani lagi menentang DAP malah Pas juga tidak lagi berani untuk bertanding di kawasan bandar termasuk di Seberang Jaya walaupun di dun bandar ini mempunyai majoriti pengundi melayu.  

Lalu semasa PRU 1999 barulah Pas mendapat satu kerusi di Permatang Pasir dalam parlimen Permatang Pauh itu pun kerana Anwar Ibrahim.  

Rupanya kawasan tradisi yang Pas maksudkan itu ialah kawasan tradisi Pas kalah hilang deposit. - alhusseyn51.blogspot

DAP lakukan penghapusan etnik secara halus

Rosly Yaakop lupa kot pasai kes Kampong Terang di Balik Pulau di mana 31 pemilik tanah (Melayu) menjual tanah mereka pada Januari 2012 kepada Maison Heights Sdn Bhd dengan jumlah harga RM8,563,983.00 yang kemudian menjualkannya kepada Kay Pride Sdn. Bhd. pada May, 2012 dengan harga RM13,457,664.00 – untung sebanyak RM 5juta dalam hanya 5 bulan. Ini terang-terang suatu eksploitasi sistem yang sedia ada dan apa lebih menyedihkan ialah ia adalah suatu eksploitasi terhadap orang-orang Melayu dengan cara yang amat jijik.

Jangan kita lupa bahawa dua daripada anggota Lembaga Pengarah Maison Heights pada masa itu adalah Timbalan Pengerusi UMNO Pulau Pinang, Dato Musa Sheikh Fadzir dan Pengerusi Pilihanraya Barisan Nasional, Dato Omar Faudzar.

Kes-kes skandal tanah yang dirancang para pemimpin UMNO jelas memperlihatkan betapa hipokritnya mereka menuduh orang lain sedangkan mereka adalah petualang Melayu dalam senyap dan PAS kini bersubahat dengan UMNO cuba nak jadi jaguh orang Melayu Pulau Pinang di samping cuba memburuk-burukkan imej dan reputasi DAP sebagai sebuah parti anti-Islam dan Melayu...

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed is a well educated man. Also a reader of books who never stopped learning. He is also a very intelligent human being.

Over 22 years Tun Dr Mahathir led Malaysia to great economic success. He put Malaysia on the world map.  Under Dr Mahathir our country became a leader among the countries of the South.

Malaysia was known for economic achievements and for our political and social stability.  The country and the people prospered. Our average economic growth exceeded 7% for over 20 years - a grand achievement.

Under Najib the gomen is close to being bankrupt. Najib has made all the people poorer (including those who are already poor) with the desperate GST. 

Najib has said repeatedly that without the GST he cannot pay the salaries of the Civil Servants. Since 1957 we have always been able to pay Civil Servants salaries, without GST.

Now with GST the people are getting poorer.

MARA loans have been cancelled. 
Hospitals do not have many medicines anymore. 
Universities have cancelled programs.
Petronas has laid off workers.
MAS has laid off workers.
The JPA announced they will not be hiring new staff.

The GST money is not generating growth because economic growth is barely above 4%. 

Unemployment is increasing - over 500,000 unemployed in 2016. About 200,000 are graduates. 90% are Malays.

So where is the GST money being used? To pay back 1MDB's RM50 Billion debt?

Tunku Mahkota Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim tidak pernah terbeban untuk meluahkan isi hatinya, dan terbaru, melontarkan pesanan kepada mereka yang tidak senang hati dengan negerinya menjadi sebahagian daripada Malaysia.

“....Anda boleh beramai-ramai berjumpa dengan YAB Perdana Menteri di Putrajaya untuk mengusulkan satu deklarasi kepada beliau untuk mengeluarkan negeri Johor dari Malaysia," menurut pesanan itu.

Dalam catatan laman Johor Southern Tigers di Facebook itu, Tunku Ismail turut memetik beberapa sebab yang menjurus kepada kelebihan negeri tersebut yang membangkitkan rasa iri hati kepada sesetengah pihak, antaranya, tiada unsur perkauman dan kebencian terhadap rasuah.

Setiap ayat dimukan dengan perkataan “Jangan salahkan Negeri Johor”.

“...Jangan salahkan Negeri Johor dan mengapa kami bangga menjadi bangsa Johor kerana negeri kami telah dibina bukan atas dasar perkauman ianya dibina kerana kami bersatu sebagai bangsa Johor sejak dahulu.

“....Mengapa kami bangga dengan pemimpin kami yang senantiasa bersama kami pada saat susah dan senang... suka dan duka.

“Jikalau kami tidak suka kepada orang yang korup... kerana kami tidak pernah dididik utk menjadi sekeji itu.”

Catatan tersebut turut menegaskan Johor telah wujud semenjak 1885, jauh sebelum tahun 1957, ketika Malaya mencapai kemerdekaannya.

Di samping itu, ia juga menyatakan rakyat Johor tidak sepatutnya dipersalahkan kerana mempunyai tengku mahkota yang dekat di hati dan membezakan antara pemimpin di negara itu dengan yang lain.

Losing Faith...

The claim by Datuk Jahara Hamid (pix,above) that a Taoist shrine at the newly refurbished Armenian Street in Penang can cause Muslims to lose faith (hilang akidah) is simply absurd. Being a Muslim, I find her conclusion not only childish but out rightly insulting to Muslims. Perhaps it is confusing to her, as being an opposition leader, everything is confusing so long as the matter makes the rounds in the state assembly and, inadvertently, raises her stature as an opposition leader.

Otto Van Bismarck’s quote “Politics is the art of the possible” is not without reasons. And this is being reinforced by author H.L. Mencken who said that “practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

Imagined or otherwise the word “hilang akidah” has been bandied about with other religious taboos ever since Islam was declared “the official religion of the country” by long-serving Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir in 2001. Mahathir’s intention was nothing more but to 'out-Islam' the other major Malay-based political party, PAS (Parti Islam Se-Malaysia). And in doing so he had, unwittingly, confused the whole nation (pun meant).

So one can “hilang akidah” (lose faith) by simply walking into a church or walk past a Chinese or Indian temple or take a peek at a shrine, as declared by Jahara Hamid. Come on, lady, I have been a practising Muslim for almost seven decades now and I have not lost my faith yet, despite the many temptations around me.

I am a byproduct of a mission school and during my formative years attended chapel services with my classmates. We sang the hymns and Christmas carols along with others of varying beliefs but none, I repeat none, of my Muslim classmates have become Christians. And to claim that the mere sight of a pre-war Taoist shrine in a public park would confuse Muslims is not only insulting but demeaning. Are Malay Muslims so easily confused by sight and sounds?

I attended a funeral service of an old friend at a church recently. The previous night my wife and I were at the wake, there were a number of Malay Muslims among the crowd. We were there not to be indoctrinated but to pay our respects to a dearly departed friend. At the end of the service I asked my accompanying reporter, a twenty-something Malay girl attired in a flowing black dress, whether she had “hilang akidah”. She shook her head and smiled. She knew perfectly well what I meant. “Sir, I’ve been to such services before. I am alright,” she answered. I am pleased with her candor. This headscarf-wearing girl, who is a devout Muslim, has never allowed trivia to distract her thoughts. If only we have more of her in our midst, especially within the ruling circle, Malaysia will be a better place to live and work.

The controversial shrine at the upgraded Armenian Street Park in Penang has been around for over 70 years. “Datuk Kong” said a resident “has been protecting the people living in the vicinity. Its presence helps to ward off evil spirits,” he added.

I have seen similar shrines during my tenure in the army. Once while operating in the jungles of Kulim in the early 1970s we came upon a Hindu temple at the fringe of a rubber estate. And like other Hindu temples, the courtyard was adorned with statues. There were two life-size horses at the entrance to the temple. I warned my men not to disturb but to respect the statues. Unbeknownst to me one of the naughtier ones decided to ride on the horse. That night we had a tough time stopping him from “riding” around our jungle base on his imaginary horseback. He came around after the temple priest revived him. 

The naivety of some Malay Muslims is mind boggling indeed. If losing faith is as easy as seeing or uttering something un-Islamic I fear for the sanity of the Muslim community in the country. Religious intolerance is fast taking root that soon it is no longer chic to be seen in my non-Muslims’ company. As it is, Christmas celebration is being frowned upon by many. Brunei has banned it totally.

Honestly, I am at a loss as to the direction this bountiful country is heading. Never mix religion and politics. But this is easier said than done.- Fathol Zaman Bukhari, Ipoh Echo.

Hang-hang UMNO/PAS

The PAS Youth Muktamar turned into a Malay warrior fashion show when PAS leaders came dressed in traditional Malay clothes complete with samping, keris and headgear. One would have thought Hari Raya came early with such colours and fashion, except that Ramadan has yet to begin.It was a break from the traditional jubah, kopiah, serbans which they probably have been wearing all their adult life.

This fashion show beats even their new found friends in arch-rival party Umno, who usually wear the simple baju Melayu or baju kurung.While there was no talk of upholding ketuanan Melayu, the message was clear — the leaders are all Malay warriors and that the party now stands based on race.- Zakiah Koya

Pasai hudud nak letak jawatan,pasai 1MDB kecut teloq...

Mengapa tak letak jawatan kerana 1MDB...

Lebih baik anggota kabinet BN meletak jawatan kerana 1MDB dan derma RM2.6 bilion diterima Datuk Seri Najib Razak berbanding isu hudud, kata Tony Pua.

Anggota parlimen Petaling Jaya Utara itu berkata tindakan "menunjuk-nunjuk" di kalangan pemimpin komponen BN berhubung rang undang-undang persendirian Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang tidak kelihatan ketika isu 1MDB dan RM2.6 bilion dibangkitkan.

Keadaan itu, kata Pua, berlaku walaupun ketua audit negara mendapati pihaknya gagal mengesahkan apa berlaku ke atas transaksi AS$7 bilion, aset dan wang tunai 1MDB di luar negara.

"Jika pemimpin BN ini serius dengan kata dua mereka untuk meletak jawatan (dalam isu hudud), mengapa mereka tidak bertindak seperti itu dalam isu 1MDB dan skandal derma Najib?

"Adakah MCA, Gerakan, MIC, Upko, SUPP dan PBB boleh terus menyokong seorang perdana menteri yang dituduh secara langsung menyelewengkan berbilion-bilion dolar dari 1MDB yang juga anak syarikat Kementerian Kewangan?" katanya dalam kenyataan hari ini.

Sejak Abdul Hadi - yang juga presiden PAS - membentangkan usul persendirian di Dewan Rakyat bagi meminda Akta 355 Perlembagaan Persekutuan beberapa pemimpin parti komponen BN menyatakan hasrat mereka meletak jawatan jika ia diluluskan.

Kata Abdul Hadi usul berkenaan dibawa untuk memperkasa bidang kuasa mahkamah syariah di Kelantan.

Najib pula mengakui wujud "salah faham" di kalangan parti komponen BN mengenai rang undang-undang persendirian dibawa Abdul Hadi pada 27 Mei lalu.

Katanya, apa yang dibentangkan Abdul Hadi bukan undang-undang hudud tetapi pindaan yang menjurus ke arah pemerkasaan sistem hukuman yang tertakluk di bawah Mahkamah Syariah.

Menurut Pua Malaysia kini dikenali di dunia sebagai negara "kleptokrasi".

"Jika pemimpin BN yang menunjuk-nunjuk itu tidak meletak jawatan ekoran kecurian berbilion dolar dari pembayar cukai di Malaysia, maka ancaman mereka (dalam isu hudud) jelas sekadar mengurangkan kesan kerosakan akibat kemesraan hubungan antara Umno dan PAS," katanya.

Kleptokrasi merujuk kepada cara pentadbiran sesebuah kerajaan yang menghadapi masalah kronik tertentu disebabkan kegagalan sistem dengan pegawai awam atau kelas pemerintah yang menggunakan rasuah untuk menambah kekayaan peribadi serta kuasa politik mereka. - mk

Hadi’s “Hudud Bill” is clearly an electoral plot to divert attention from Umno/BN’s fatal sore which is the 1MDB/Najib corruption scandal and to reap political capital ahead of the coming by-elections. 

The Bill is in effect a non-issue as it never made it (nor was it intended) for the first reading. The significance of the Bill is also over-played, as it covers only the offences of alcohol consumption, adultery and apostasy which are already included in the existing Syariah jurisdiction. 

Even if the Bill is passed in parliament, it can’t be of much help to the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code 2015, as the latter is void in the first place due to fundamental conflict with the Federal Constitution.

Hence, the hue and cry raised by MCA, Gerakan, and other BN component parties is actually much ado about nothing. Such theatrics are meant to salvage their total loss of credibility in the Chinese community, and thus helping to swing some Chinese support back to Umno/BN. 

Advice to Pakatan Harapan: concentrate on the gold mine of 1MDB/Najib scandal, and avoid inter-party and intra-party disunity at all costs. What is even more important than winning these two by-elections are the forging and preserving of unity of purpose and actions among allies. 

Look for the forest, not the trees. Treat this as an invaluable exercise to build up the Pakatan machinery for the real battle ahead – GE 14.- Kim Quek

Resign over hudud? Better to quit over 1MDB

Satu laporan polis hari ini dibuat di Balai di Polis Dang Wangi ke atas Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Razak atas dakwaan menerima harta curi dengan curang dan menolong menyembunyikan harta curi serta kesalahan kesalahan lain di bawah Seksyen 411 dan Seksyen 414 Kanun Keseksaan.

Selain Najib, turut dilaporkan atas dakwaan yang sama ialah bekas Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif (CEO) 1MDB Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi dan pemilik Good Star Limited (secara manfaat) Low Thaek Jo (Jho Low).

Menurut Ahli Parlimen Segambut Lim Lip Eng, berdasarkan laporan dan pendedahan media, ketiga tiga mereka mempunya kaitan melibatkan skandal mega 1MDB.

“Saya merujuk kepada laporan berita Bernama bertajuk ‘Najib: Bank Negara has lodge police report against WSJ.’

“Najib dirujuk sebagai penandatangan tunggal dana 1MDB manakala Shahrol pula sebagai orang yang mengesahkan pemindahan wang manakala pemilik Good Star pula sebagai penerima akhir wang tersebut.

“Berita itu menyatakan bahawa akhbar WSJ melaporkan Good Star Limited adalah dimiliki secara manfaat oleh Jho Low,” jelas beliau.

Dalam sebuah laporan, WSJ mendakwa bahawa Bank Negara telah menulis surat yang mengesahkan bahawa Good Star Limited dimiliki oleh jutawan Low Taek Jho. 

Akhbar antarabangsa itu malah menyiarkan salinan surat terbabit yang selama ini enggan didedahkan Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Kira kira Wang Negara (PAC) Datuk Hasan Arifin.

Hasan malah menafikan syarikat Good Star Limited adalah milik Jho Low dan menyatakan perkara tersebut sudah selesai kerana PAC telah membentangkan laporannya.

Tindakan Hasan itu telah mengundang kritikan dan membangkitkan lebih banyak persoalan terhadap siasatan PAC ke atas skandal mega berbilion ringgit membabitkan Perdana Menteri.

Sabit kesalahan di bawah Seksyen 411 Kanun Keseksaan boleh menyebabkan hukuman penjara sehingga lima tahun atau denda atau kedua duanya sekali manakala kesalahan di bawah Seksyen 414 Kanun Keseksaan pula boleh dipenjara sehingga tujuh tahun atau denda atau kedua duanya sekali. 29 Mei 2016.- f/bk

“The individual answered that it was for two simple reasons, the first is to obtain votes.

“And the second is to make it easy to control the minds of the stupid and uneducated.”

Reacting to this revelation, Tunku Ismail said that what he wanted most for fellow Johoreans was an improved education system so that his people could become more discerning individuals.

“I don’t want my people to be easily manipulated by the system,” he said, as well as by others who “twist and turn from the truth” as well as distract the people from the main issues.

Meanwhile, Tunku Ismail advised the police against arresting anyone who uttered “seditious” statements against him, but to let his critics meet him “face to face” instead.

“I would prefer it if the authorities can organise a meeting for me to meet with these people and give them the privilege of saying what they want to say to my face, man to man.

“I would appreciate it if you can agree to my humble proposal.”
