What has happened to Bersatu's 

original objective to replace UMNO...

A Chinese proverb says: "A mountain cannot have two tigers." (一山 不容 二虎)

Bersatu had entered the political battlefield in the GE14 (2018) as a component party of Pakatan Harapan (PH) to contest in 52 seats in the Peninsula using the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) logo.

In general, Bersatu was tasked to contest in UMNO constituencies, in line with Bersatu’s principle of existence (raison d'etre) and foundation as a party of bumiputera Malays, as well as the alternative, the challenger and the replacement of the damaged UMNO in the country's new political landscape.

Except for Tapah which was the traditional seat for the MIC, Tg. Piai (MCA) and Simpang Renggam (Gerakan), all the other 49 seats were majority Malays hence the traditional seats for UMNO or PAS.

Of the 52 contested seats, Bersatu had won 13 seats, equivalent to 25% of the party's success rate. In terms of votes, the total number of votes cast for all 52 candidates was 718,648, equivalent to 28% of the total voter turnout of 2,573,505. Who exactly are these Bersatu voters?

As a new party, a new political brand which (through borrowing and riding on its political allies’ brands, symbols and platforms) had entered the electoral field for the first time, without a basic voter track record, it is important for us to see and understand the profile of the typical Bersatu voters.

For this purpose, we use a sample of 13 seats won by Bersatu. Overall, it comprised a total of 760,925 voters with the ethnic demographic numbers of 74.0% Malays, 21.3% Chinese and 5.2% Indians and Others.

The total number of Voter Turnout was 625,199 (equivalent to 82%). This means, out of 100 Malays, 37 people voted for Bersatu. Out of 100 Chinese, 83 voted for Bersatu. And out of 100 Indians, 58 voted for Bersatu. The total number of votes garnered by the 13 Bersatu candidates was 301,681 (equivalent to 48.2% of the total Voter Turnout).

This generally means that, for every 100 voters who voted Bersatu, 57 were Malays, 37 were Chinese and 6 were Indian and Others. If we scrutinise this further, we can identify the profile of the voters based on the party they had voted for in the past. That would be the origin of the Bersatu voters.

The overwhelming majority of votes garnered by Bersatu came from 3 important sources, the original Pakatan Rakyat (PR) voters (excluding PAS voters), and the rest were UMNO-BN voters who had decided that they wished for a better country. By logic, in the last GE13, all the voters (except for some who had voted in favour of Berjasa or Bebas) who rejected BN (and UMNO)) had voted for PR.

We must remember that, in GE13, PAS was in the PR coalition, so in GE14, PAS's staunch voters would still vote for PAS in GE14. Logically, with the three-way battle, a number of PR votes were taken away to be in PAS’s favour.

In conclusion, out of 100 Bersatu voters, 54 of them were the original existing voters of PR and 7 of them were first-time voters, and the remaining 39 were UMNO-BN voters (the majority were Malay UMNO voters, with the exception in Simpang Renggam, Tg. Piai and Elephant Alor Gajah). This ratio demonstrates that 35% of Bersatu voters in the last GE14 were originally BN voters in GE13.

As for the rest, 54 voters were original PR supporters, of whom 30 were Malays, who highly likely already have their own party of choice before Bersatu came into being, and therefore would remain with that party, in any given situation. Bersatu's real challenge is how to retain the 39 former BN voters. It is these people whom Bersatu should build upon and expand.

However, this would generally depend on the ‘mood’ of the voters. The existence of Bersatu, being a new party, is essentially to become the alternative replacement to UMNO by offering more transparent and clean Malay political culture.

We can reflect on the 'mood' of the electorate by observing the Semenyih and Tg Piai by-elections. Semenyih and Tg. Piai are two typical examples of BN traditional seats (UMNO in Semenyih, MCA in Tg. Piai) which were seized by Bersatu in the GE14.

As mentioned above, the seat was won by a factor of 35% from the GE13 BN voters who had decided for a change and voted Bersatu instead. However, it is evident from these by-elections that BN had successfully recaptured the two seats and we witnessed the severe defeat of Bersatu due to various reasons. And as we all are aware, the main reason for this is that UMNO-BN voters have returned to their original party. Bersatu was only getting the votes from existing PR voters there.

In summary, Bersatu which was initially established as an alternative party to UMNO had failed to retain its position and was not able to compete with UMNO-BN in their traditional strongholds. Bersatu had existed (and won) because UMNO had faced a crisis of deficit in confidence amongst the Malays. However, if UMNO rises once again, and UMNO-BN voters start to turn back to their traditional party, then Bersatu will be in big trouble.

This problem is further evident through the failure of Bersatu in increasing its membership and divisions after winning the GE14. In Semenyih, Bersatu has only one division, while in Tg. Piai Bersatu has only 5 divisions compared to UMNO. How can Bersatu as a Malay party survive without membership at the grassroots level?

One thing that needs to be recognised and understood, any Malay party that wishes to remain in the local political scene needs to have substantial membership at the grassroot level. The very basis of Malay politics is politics based on grassroot support and membership. That is the secret behind UMNO’s and PAS's strength.

And, the sooner UMNO-BN rises, the more it will rebuild its strengths and regain the confidence of its traditional voters; which translates into more trouble for Bersatu, and would even spell the doom for Bersatu.

In fact, we must admit that those who had voted for Bersatu were clear in their desire to see the new Malay political culture which promises more transparency and integrity. Now, we fear their regret because in the end Bersatu is, without much guilt or remorse, conspiring with the faction that they had earlier voted against and brought down.

Looking at the current situation, having commanded the dominant presence in the federal government under the unofficial coalition called Perikatan Nasional, as well as receiving the gifts of two states with Menteri Besars who are its party members (Johor and Melaka), and as a state which is dominated by them (Perak), plus the share of holding the nation's leading GLCs; UMNO now appears to be a phoenix rising from the ashes. Not only this serves as a lifeline, it is a re-energisation of UMNO at the highest level.

In this state of affairs, as we move towards GE15, Bersatu seems to be presenting their necks to be slaughtered by UMNO. Expecting UMNO to compromise by maintaining the status quo of the existing Bersatu seats would essentially mean Bersatu is giving way to UMNO to return to power and ultimately appoint Zahid Hamidi as the 9th PM based on their current composition of seats.

In both scenarios, maintaining the status quo would mean a loss to Bersatu in the next GE15! To the members and leaders of Bersatu, for the love of this sacred party, I call upon all of you to look beyond this moment and see the bigger picture of the future, not just for the personal gain of today! - Dr Maszlee Malik

Hantu punya DAP...

1. DAP bersama dalam PH dan parti saya juga dalam PH. Kami ada perjanjian bersama. Anggota PH mestilah sama-sama sokong PH. Itu tak pelik. Hubungan bersama yang sah dan rasmi. Yang pelik ialah bila parti pak lebai kempen untuk Umno dan MCA. Mereka tidak ada sebarang perjanjian. Penubuhan Muafakat Nasional pun tidak pernah didaftarkan. Jadi, hubungan mereka tak sah. Itu sepatutnya yang pelik dan wajar dipersoalkan.

2. Saya sokong DAP sebab saya tak nak MCA menang. Kalau DAP kalah, yang menang adalah MCA. Nak tunggu parti pak lebai bertanding kerusi DAP, memang takde laa. Cakap je besar, tapi penakut pahit. Parti MCA ini pada saya jauh lebih jahat berbanding DAP. Bayangkan kalau MCA ada 42 kerusi Parlimen macam DAP sekarang ... mesti naik tocang giler. Ada 2 kerusi pun habis jawatan penting depa sapu. Dengan 2 kerusi tu pun dia berani hina hukum hudud. Dengan 2 kerusi pun dah berani sergah orang tak tentu pasal. Bayangkan kalau MCA ada 42 kerusi. Mau dilempangnya pak-pak lebai tu.

3. DAP adalah parti berbilang kaum. Saya memang tak akan menyokong apa-apa parti perkauman yang hanya dianggotai oleh kaum atau penganut agama tertentu sahaja. MCA adalah parti perkauman. MIC adalah parti perkauman. Daripada sokong MCA atau MIC, tentulah lebih logik untuk saya sokong DAP.

4. DAP adalah parti politik yang sah berdaftar mengikut undang-undang negara. Maknanya, DAP bukan parti yang merbahaya kepada negara. Kalau DAP parti yang merbahaya, tentulah ia sudah diharamkan. Hakikatnya DAP adalah sama macam parti-parti lain juga dari sudut undang-undang dan perlembagaan negara.

5. DAP tak jual hukum agama untuk kepentingan kuasa politik. Adalah satu kecurangan paling besar bagi mana-mana parti politik yang menunggang agama untuk kepentingan politik.

Jadi ... apa masalahnya saya sokong DAP. Bukan berdosa pun. TGNA pernah sokong DAP. Ust Fadzil Noor pernah sokong DAP. Hj Hadi pun dulu pernah jadi barua DAP. Muhyidin pun sama. Mereka tak pernah mengaku salah, bertaubat, atau minta maaf pun. - Jamzuri Ardani

Questions over Riza’s 

money laundering deal...

The deal which the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) had struck with movie producer Riza Aziz, the step-son of Najib Razak, on sentencing over alleged misappropriation of 1MDB funds raises many questions. On May14, the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court granted Riza a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) on a charge of money laundering involving US$248 million (RM1.08 billion) linked to 1MDB funds.

The DNAA was conditional upon the return of foreign assets linked to the alleged crime estimated at US$107.3 million (RM465.3 million). Failure to comply with the order will result in Riza having to face the same charges in court. MACC chief Azam Baki claimed that former attorney-general Tommy Thomas had agreed to the deal, but various facts do not substantiate his claim.

Thomas resigned on Feb 28, but according to a news report in The Edge, on April 2, the AGC had yet to “answer a representation by Riza to review his money-laundering charges”. This information had been disclosed by Riza’s lawyer, Hariharan Tara Singh, when asked about the outcome of the representation.

If Thomas’ alleged deal with Riza had been arranged before his resignation and had been agreed upon by both parties, why would Riza’s lawyer ask the AGC for a confirmation about the charges that had been levied against him? This suggests that no deal had been struck between Thomas and Riza or, if a deal had been mentioned, Thomas had not agreed to it.

So, why is Azam adamant that Thomas had struck a deal? According to The Malaysian Insight, Thomas said: “I am terribly disappointed that the MACC had to make this false statement.” Azam must have realised that the deal would have outraged the public. If he was genuinely concerned about this public interest case, why did he not query the details of the deal with new Attorney-General Idrus Harun?

Perhaps, Azam could have contacted Thomas to verify if he had indeed agreed to the deal. Instead, he told the press that Thomas had agreed to the deal. Thomas has denied the MACC’s claim that he had agreed to the plea bargain. He was aware that Riza’s lawyers had made representations to his chambers regarding the money laundering charges against their client because the matter had been brought to his attention by his special officer, Rahayu Mamuzaini, when he was still the AG. After scrutiny, the documents were passed to the special prosecutor, Gopal Sri Ram.

By the time Thomas had left the AGC, he said there had been no progress with the prosecution. Thomas said: “I resigned two-and-a-half months ago, and up to that point, there was no agreement to drop charges against Riza. So, it is wholly untrue and a fabrication to say that I had agreed to the decision.”

Azam claimed he was told about Thomas’ plea bargain by a deputy public prosecutor involved in the case. Azam said: “This is an ongoing case in court, so whatever decision is made by the deputy public prosecutor. We inform the public about what’s happening. That’s all.

“Without their statement and permission, we wouldn’t have made any kind of confirmation to the public. This is what we were informed.”

So, who is the nameless DPP that Azam referred to and did he furnish written proof to Azam about Thomas’ deal? It is curious that the new AG did not scrutinise any deals or judgments that relate to high-profile cases such as Riza’s.

Why is the new AG silent about this deal which has enraged the public? Did Azam verify with Sri Ram that the DPP had told him the truth? This deal has serious ramifications. It does not give the rakyat any confidence in either the AGC or the MACC. Apart from Riza and his family, who else has been spared public humiliation, and who has the most to benefit from this deal?

The rakyat gains nothing from this deal but the mixed message that is sent by this deal is worrying. The deal implies that if you are charged with having stolen or misappropriated vast amounts of money, you can escape jail and a hefty fine by returning half the loot. - Mariam Mokhtar,fmt

DAP never failed you each time 

you asked for help, Muhyiddin...

At Sheraton Hotel in the early hours of May 10, 2018, the mild-mannered Muhyiddin Yassin pulled me and Lim Kit Siang aside to ask the DAP to support a Bersatu candidate for the post of Johor menteri besar. He needed the favour to acknowledge his contribution in swinging the state votes to Pakatan Harapan.

Despite the DAP winning the largest number of seats, 14 in total, compared to Amanah with 9, Bersatu 8 and PKR 5 in the state assembly, the DAP was not claiming the post of menteri besar. Kit Siang was open for discussion.

After DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng consulted Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, the DAP agreed to support Muhyiddin’s nominee for menteri besar. On May 11, 2018, the sultan of Johor sent an aircraft to pick up Muhyiddin from Kuala Lumpur. I tagged along. It was my first-ever experience on a private jet.

Three months earlier, on February 8, 2018, Muhyiddin and I travelled together on a Malindo low-cost flight after a Harapan Johor meeting. He told me that when he was deputy prime minister, he had travelled on a government jet dedicated to him.

As an opposition leader without any privileges, Muhyiddin said he felt good that people appreciated our struggle. When he was in Barisan Nasional, he had not experienced random public member paying for his meals at coffee shops or warung just to show support. The public enthusiasm was very encouraging.

On that May 2018 flight, Muhyiddin’s aide told me this was the team’s first experience in a private jet since their boss was sacked as DPM in July 2015. They felt great about GE14 because we created history by doing the right thing for the nation, albeit Muhyiddin’s personal sufferings between 2015 and 2018.

The next day, on May 12, 2018, Harapan decided Muhyiddin as home minister, Mohamad as defence minister, and Guan Eng as finance minister. And the next day on May 13, I was at Muhyiddin’s house, just me and him. He was feeling dejected. He told me he wanted to resign from all positions the night before because his request to be appointed as finance minister was turned down by Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He was persuaded to stay on.

He also told me that in 1995, being the Umno vice-president with the highest votes and after serving as Johor menteri besar for nine years, he moved to the federal government expecting to hold a senior economic portfolio. But Mahathir as the then PM, only appointed him to the most junior position of youth and sports minister. He informed me that Anwar Ibrahim told him to be patient and wait for 1998, hinting that Muhyiddin would be his choice of deputy prime minister.

In deep reflection during that tranquil morning, Muhyiddin said to me that after more than 20 years, after he had served as deputy prime minister for six years (2009 to 2015), was he still going to serve as Anwar’s deputy should the transition of power between Mahathir and Anwar were to happen? Between us, there was no answer.

Muhyiddin was diagnosed with cancer in July 2018. I visited him twice at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. Once by myself and the second time I accompanied Guan Eng. I considered Muhyiddin an elderly friend and was really worried about his health. In the months after his gradual recovery, in many of our meetings, he confided to me that he was thinking of calling it quits. The illness changed his perspective on life.

The Johor quandary

On April 24, 2019, after Muhyiddin and Mahathir clashed on the choice of Mazlan Bujang as Johor Bersatu chief, I was with him at his Home Ministry office. He told me he was thinking of throwing in the towel as Mahathir wouldn’t listen to his views even though Johor was his home state.

Muhyiddin was the chairperson of the Harapan Johor council. He was upset but would still sign Mazlan’s appointment letter. He told me that Bersatu’s constitution dictated that as president he had to consult and accept the decisions of his chairperson, Mahathir. In the subsequent meetings over the next several months, he repeatedly told me that he was still bitter with the Bersatu chairperson over the choice of Mazlan.

On June 6, 2019, Muhyiddin told me he has mostly recovered from his illness. His doctor who sat with us at the open house of Muhyiddin’s son also said he was recovering very well. I was relieved to hear the good news.

Fast forward to October 2019. The attempted national political coup put together by the troika of Azmin Ali, Hishammuddin Hussein and Hamzah Zainudin kicked up huge racial sentiments on both the Malay and non-Malay ends.

It was an attempt to form a new Malay unity coalition government without the participation of the DAP and Amanah. Muhyiddin was very concerned that “divergent views among us because of different ideological beliefs are becoming more pronounced now”.

The viability of the Bersatu-DAP coalition relations was being seriously questioned and there were huge pressures from the hawks in Bersatu on him to act against the DAP. He hosted a small dinner between top Bersatu and DAP leaders on October 29, 2019, to find ways to save the coalition.

Both parties agreed that the extreme narratives on both Malay and non-Malay fronts are resulting in us suffering in the middle. We should do more to hold the coalition together.

The meeting effectively but temporarily fended off the attempted October coup by the troika of Azmin, Hishammuddin and Hamzah using the DAP as a bogeyman. However, Harapan’s image did not improve, especially when abused racially by its opponents.

On the night of November 16, 2019, I was in the operations room with Muhyiddin and his inner circle watching the results of the Tanjung Piai by-election streaming in.

The demoralised Muhyiddin commented that “this was worse than a tsunami.” Peculiar moves, stranger motives

A special Harapan presidential council meeting was held on November 23, 2019, with the sole agenda of discussing the presentation by Muhyiddin as chairperson of the Harapan election campaign committee.

He outlined the following political challenges:

- Racial sentiments resulting in the negative effect on Harapan’s standing
- Malays perceived that Harapan was controlled by the DAP
- The Chinese perceived that Harapan was controlled by Bersatu and Mahathir
- The Harapan cabinet was perceived as incompetent
- The question of transition between the 7th PM and 8th PM caused the perception that the Harapan government was not stable

He proposed Harapan:

- To handle race and religion issues wisely by taking a more moderate and cautious approach
- To change the image of the DAP being anti-Malay, Bersatu anti-Chinese
- To discipline party members who criticise their own party or criticise leaders of another Harapan component party
- To handle the transition between the 7th PM and the 8th PM wisely
- To reshuffle the cabinet to show that Harapan has a high-performance cabinet

Muhyiddin proposed that Harapan should work towards recovering to a level of 60 percent approval rating within a year’s time. After the special meeting and as Parliament went into recess, Muhyiddin went for a year-end overseas trip in late December and part of January. He returned looking very fresh and he was in very good health.

Mohamad Sabu met Muhyiddin on January 22, 2020. Their meeting left the former with a very strange feeling. The then defence minister confided with me that he was worried that Muhyiddin had a new idea that was against the basic principles of Harapan.

It seemed that Muhyiddin was thinking of some form of Malay unity government and he was no longer keen on Anwar becoming the next PM.

On January 31, I attended a Chinese New Year event with Muhyiddin in Grisek in his Pagoh constituency. Subsequently, I visited Muhyiddin at his house for a long chat on February 5. He was very friendly to me, as always. But I detected a change in his view.

For him, if nothing was changed in Harapan, then Bersatu would lose badly in the next general election. I gave him a counterview that Bersatu would be eaten up alive by Umno and PAS in any form of Malay unity coalition, hence the best partner for Bersatu was the DAP as there would be little competition in seats.

UMNO's voice is getting louder each day...

That day I went away with a feeling that something strange had happened, something had changed in him but I believed he was still weighing his options. I thought that the honourable Muhyiddin who always saw the larger picture and was prepared to concede to Mahathir in 2017 would probably still be there.

I hoped that the Muhyiddin who repeatedly thought of quitting would not be tempted by worldly positions but would think about his legacies. But he is only human. Perhaps the temptation was so great he couldn’t resist anymore.

Perhaps his frustration with Mahathir, the prompting of the Malay troika of Azmin, Hishammuddin and Hamzah and his own ultimate ambition of becoming PM finally tilted him towards the Sheraton political coup on February 23.

I am sad that my elderly friend Muhyiddin has chosen this path. His good deeds in the epic fight against Najib Razak’s kleptocracy are now giving way to an image of power-grabbing without a legitimate cause. Perhaps Dr Jekyll has been transformed into Mr Hyde.

Some leaders and supporters of the Muhyiddin-led loose coalition Perikatan Nasional are back with their old nasty tactic of vilifying the DAP in their attempt to inflame racial hatred. Let me just say this to my elderly friend Muhyiddin. I am a DAP member.

In four years between 2016 and 2020, each time you asked DAP for help, we never failed you, we did everything possible to assist you. Playing the anti-DAP card to justify the existence of the Perikatan Nasional coalition would only make you seem hypocritical.  - Liew Chin Tong,mk

Sapa tipu sapa? Sapa sailang sapa..part 2...

Rakaman suara kedua dikatakan dirakam dalam mesyuarat Majlis Pimpinan Tertinggi (MPT) Bersatu sebelum keluar PH pula di muat naik ke Internet di laman web pro-Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Suara mirip bekas perdana menteri itu meminta mesyuarat tidak memaksanya untuk mungkir janji meletakkan jawatan.

“Tolonglah jangan paksa saya. 

"Jangan paksa saya buat sesuatu yang bertentangan dengan prinsip saya,” menurut individu itu dengan suara sebak.

“Saya janji saya tunai. Saya kata nak letak jawatan, saya letak jawatan.”

"Tapi saya kalau janji nak letak jawatan, saya tak dibenar meletak jawatan, itu salah saya sebab keputusan itu ada pada diri saya," kata rakaman suara itu lagi.

Rakaman suara itu dipercayai membincangkan isu peralihan kuasa antara bekas perdana menteri itu dengan Presiden PKR Anwar Ibrahim.

Sumber yang dekat dengan Mahathir pula mengesahkan bahawa rakaman itu asli.

Dalam rakaman pertama yang bocor, individu dengan suara mirip Presiden Bersatu Muhyiddin Yassin memberitahu mesyuarat supaya memberikan kepercayaan kepada Mahathir untuk menentukan kedudukan Bersatu dalam PH. Portal ini difahamkan ia dirakam di penghujung mesyuarat pada 23 Februari.

Menurut rakaman suara itu, tiada siapa yang boleh memintanya supaya tidak melepaskan jawatan jika sudah buat keputusan sedemikian rupa. Berdasarkan rakaman suara itu, ia dirakam dalam satu pertemuan dengan pihak yang menyokong Mahathir untuk terus menerajui negara.

"Sebab itu, hari ini akan diadakan satu mesyuarat dengan pihak-pihak mereka yang sokong saya dari parti lawan ini akan jumpa dengan saya dan inilah juga cerita yang saya akan sampaikan.

"Dengan itu perancangan untuk mengadap duli yang maha mulia untuk menyatakan bahawa saya dapat sokongan daripada majoriti tak perlu dibuatlah kerana saya dah dapat sokongan.

"Saya belum letak jawatan. Itulah cerita yang sebenarnya saya," menurut rakaman audio itu lagi.

Pada 26 Feb lalu, Mahathir melepaskan jawatan sebagai perdana menteri ketujuh selepas tidak sampai dua tahun menerajui kepimpinan negara. Keputusan itu dibuat di tengah-tengah kemelut yang menyaksikan Bersatu bertindak meninggalkan PH. - mk

Mahkamah melepas tanpa 

membebaskan anak tiri Najib...

Keputusan mahkamah hari ini melepas tanpa membebaskan (DNAA) penerbit filem Hollywood Riza Aziz bergantung kepada pematuhannya terhadap persetujuan yang dicapai bersama pendakwaan untuk memulangkan jutaan ringgit wang kerajaan yang didakwa berkaitan degan lima pertuduhan pengubahan wang haram.

Bagaimanapun, sekiranya Riza gagal untuk mematuhi perjanjian tersebut, maka pendakwaan berhak untuk mengenakan semula pertuduhan tersebut dan mendakwanya di mahkamah.

Hal ini dimaklumkan pada salinan kenyataan yang dibacakan oleh Ketua DPP Gopal Sri Ram ketika beliau memberitahu Mahkamah Sesyen Kuala Lumpur pagi ini mengenai persetujuan dicapai antara tertuduh dan pihak pendakwaan. - mk

Muhyiddin's days are numbered?...

The 2018 general elections brought together four different political parties with divergent ideologies and political philosophies but one common goal, to topple the 60-year-old BN regime. The kingpin of that epoch-making miracle was Tun Mahathir.

The same Mahathir was instrumental in the collapse of the PH administration on February 24, 2020. And with PH now moving to table a private member's motion of no confidence against the prime minister, still this same Mahathir is the proposer. In other words, this guy plays a pivotal role in each and every key stage in the coalition's success as well as its downfall.

On the second anniversary of the nation's first ever change of federal administration on May 9, Mahathir and Anwar Ibrahim were back in good terms, again. Many were awed when the news broke. The duo insisted in a joint statement that they were prepared to put aside their differences "for the sake of the people"!

I recently wrote on this very column about the political drama unfolding in the country. No, this whole thing has not come to a close yet. Expect more sequels to follow. Indeed "power" makes one out of his mind and control. Politics itself is not a dirty name, but politicians are.

19th century British prime minister Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston famously said, "We have no eternal allies, and we have no perpetual enemies. Our interests are eternal and perpetual..." 

For the sake of political power, one would work with a demon that keeps betraying others, thinking that a little caution should keep the dangers at bay.

It doesn't matter now who was betraying whom or who was the culprit that brought down the PH administration. What is important is the reality that power is already in hand or about to be so. The noble rhetoric "for the sake of the people, nation and religion" is not to be taken seriously.

Apparently the coronavirus has failed to teach our politicians a lesson. Politicians on both sides of the divide have forgotten that a week before the regime change in February, the country went without a functioning government and cabinet. The whole burden was forced onto the shoulders of our health DG Noor Hisham. 

If the tabligh gathering at Masjid Seri Petaling could be stopped in time, the number of our positive COVID-19 cases could have been halved! With the outbreak gradually tamed down now, these politicians are waiting to act again in a renewed round of power struggle.

Muhyiddin is rightly called the country's weakest prime minister in history. Response to his call to get 12 political parties to join forces to consolidate his Perikatan Nasional alliance has been underwhelming. Umno president Ahmad Zahid says his party's support for PN is established upon the basis of individual Umno MPs being part of the government.

Zahid is not someone one should take very lightly, and Muhyiddin will learn about this in time. Muhyiddin's excessively bloated 70-plus-member cabinet is not big enough to satiate the lust of the Umno chief, and the DPM post he has been coveting is still pending to this day.

PPBM has a total of 36 parliamentary seats, of which Muhyiddin comfortably commands 32, with the remaining four being Mahathir and his closest aides. The prime minister needs the support of BN (42 seats), PAS (18) and GPS (19) to make up 115 in order to hold on to his office.

It is a matter of time the PN regime will fall, if Muhyiddin is unable to meet the demands of Umno and PAS. PPBM will only lose working with Umno-PAS. Due to overlapping of seats, its candidates will inevitably have to fight tooth and nail with candidates from Umno and PAS come the next general elections.

There's no bounds to Umno's and PAS's greed. To quench their thirst, Muhyiddin has agreed to put all PN backbenchers on GLC boards in a blatant political appointment in gross disregard of an appointee's capability and background. But even that will not appease Umno-PAS, the starving vulture ready to gobble up the whole of PPBM.

Even within his own party Muhyiddin is no better than a lame duck, facing the hostile actions of Mahathir. And his plan to convene a supreme council meeting to ax Mahathir and his son has been cautiously shelved. With enemies all around him—Umno and PAS on one side and Mahathir on the other—Muhyiddin's days are numbered barring any miracle. - Pook Ah Lek, Sin Chew Daily

Sapa tipu sapa? Sapa sailang sapa...

Rakaman audio seperti suara Muhyiddin Yassin  kini sedang bergentayangan dalam alam siber. Sausananya semacam dalam mesyuarat. Suara itu menyebut soal keputusan Bersatu untuk keluar daripada Pakatan Harapan terserah kepada Dr Mahathir. Bagi masa Mahathir putuskan seminggu. Ertinya keputusan untuk keluar PH tidak buat secara kolektif.

Hal ini bertentangan dengan kenyataan Ketua Penerangan Bersatu Radzi Jidin yang dalam satu kenyataanya mengatakan keputusan itu muktamad. Siapa yang berbohong di sini, Muhyiddin, Radzi Jidin atau Dr Mahathir. 

Berikut adalah transkrip rakaman suara Presiden Bersatu, Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin, di mesyuarat Majlis Pimpinan Tertinggi (MPT) pada 23 Februari lalu.

Frasa kunci di sini ialah "....kita bagi mandat penuh kepada Tun." Kata Muhyiddin:

"..kita nak cari sebab lah, kalau kita nak cari sebab itulah. Yang lain pun kena gerak. Jadi langkah itu mungkin boleh trigger. Tapi kita harap Tun akan buat rombakan Kabinet dalam tempoh sebelum Parlimen bersidang... dalam seminggu ni selesaikan semua sekali.

Dan di kala itu mungkin kita boleh tunggu apabila Tun jumpa dengan Ketua/Presiden parti.

Ok, we wait for one week, for whatever it is, then we will be more sober...(Baiklah, kita tunggu seminggu, apa sekali pun, di kala itu kita akan lebih tenang).

Hari ini a bit emotional (sedikit emosional)... dan kita fikirkan soal paling besar dalam sejarah kita, iaitu out of PH moving to the coalition but we still be the government... government led by Bersatu. This is important (iaitu keluar daripada PH dan berpindah kepada campuran tetapi masih dalam kerajaan ... dipimpin oleh Bersatu).

So (jadi) kalau mungkin wajar, munasabah dan nak kira hari ini kalau boleh kita tamatkan mesyuarat kita pada dasar... lepas tu kita BAGI MANDAT KEPADA TUN. Setuju?

Kalau tak bagi mandat, kita kena mesyuarat sekali lagi. Ok? BERI MANDAT KEPADA TUN. It is (ia adalah) Tun punya kebijaksanaan.

Tak pernah kita ragukan kebijaksanaan Tun. There must be some wisdom. He has been PM for so long, we have to respect him (mesti ada kebijaksanaan. Dia menjadi Perdana Menteri begitu lama, kita perlu hormati beliau).

So we have to do whatever he say/ask to do (jadi, kita kena lakukan apa yang dia kata/suruh kita buat). Jadi kalau begitu, kalau setuju kita boleh tamatkan mesyuarat. Keputusan kita pada dasar kita hormat pandangan Tun. Kita faham apa yang dia maksudkan tapi bagi sedikit masa."

Jelas mesyuarat MPT pada 23 Februari belum buat keputusan keluar PH. Apa yang jelas, rakaman itu diambil sebelum berlakunya perjumpaan rahsia di Hotel Sheraton yang melanggar keputusan MPT seperti yang Muhyiddin sendiri simpulkan di atas.

Difahamkan, Muhyiddin adalah antara individu yang secara rahsia mengumpulkan ahli-ahli majlis tertinggi BERSATU di Hotel Sheraton. Dalam pada ingin memberi mandat kepada Dr Mahathir, akhirnya Muhyiddin sendiri telah merampas mandat tersebut menerusi tipu helah.

Hari ini, tidak sampai tiga bulan Muhyiddin menjadi Perdana Menteri Perikatan Nasional (PN), Bersatu kehilangan kuasa di segala peringkat, dipermain dan dibuli oleh Umno dan Pas.

Pasai tu Muhyiddin sebagai Menteri Dalam Negeri kerajaan PH begitu keberatan bertindak ke atas Umno walaupun disyaki telah melanggar perlembagaan parti. - f/bk

Ketakutan Kerajaan Tebuk Atap memuncak.. bila sidang sehari..hanya dijadualkan mendengar Titah Ucapan YDP Agong tanpa perbahasan.. sebagai cukup syarat mengelakkan parlimen terbubar.. 

Kalau diumpamakan sesi persekolahan..sidang Parlimen ni, jadi macam cukup syarat.. pelajar sekolah datang, dengar ucapan guru besar dalam perhimpunan..lepas tu balik rumah.. sebagai cukup syarat kehadiran ke sekolah.. Bak kata Tun M.. takkan Melayu dah jadi bacul.. Apa yg ditakutkan sgt ni? Who is the Malays' worst enemy?...

In the latest entry in his blog, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he was ashamed that many Malays believe DAP and its secretary-general Lim Guan Eng would destroy the Malays, if they were part of the federal government.

He said, "I admit that the Malays have several weaknesses among which was their lack of success in business and economic activity. Many poor Malays are involved in drugs, in certain crimes and corruption. Our prisons are full of Malays."

Then he asked, "...But is it true that the Malays are so weak that a political party could destroy them?" So, are the Chinese strong, or the Malays weak?

I went to a mission school and do not recall any animosity between the Chinese and the Malays, at least among my school friends. We studied together, ate from one another's tupperware during break, spent weekends in one another's houses and socialized.

There was intense competition in various subjects, and that cannot be bad, because it made us work harder to try to outdo one another. So, where and how did the vicious enmity begin? Who started it and why? I think we all know that Umno started it, and successive prime ministers did nothing to help integrate the races but exacerbated the division.

My father's photos from his student days in England show that he was surrounded by fellow Malayans—Malays, Indians and Chinese. I do not believe his youth was tainted by the inter-racial hatred which is prevalent today.

An older friend, a non-Malay lawyer in his sixties, whom I shall call David, related a similar experience from his youth. He enjoyed the friendship of the Malays in much the same way as I did, with the non-Malays.

Every Christmas, one of David's friends would visit him, but recently the teenage children of his Malay friend refused to shake hands with David, wish him "Happy Christmas" or even drink from his glasses, even if coke was poured from a bottle. They would just sit in the car whilst their father reminisced about old times.

David was visibly hurt, but his friend said, "You mustn't mind them because they go to a Mara school." The father's justification for his children's racism is wrong, and he should have done more to correct his children's manners and attitude.

A classmate who enrolled her children in a national school said when her children shared their food with their non-Malay friends at break, their teacher admonished them and warned them not to mix with non-Malays and non-Muslims. When my friend complained to the headmistress about a racist teacher, her children were bullied. So, is racism part of the school curriculum?

I know two families—one Malay, the other Chinese. Their children were not academic so when they finished Form Three, the Chinese boy was sent by his father to a garage to learn how to be a mechanic. Today, he runs a successful car repair and imported car-parts business. The Malay parents did not offer their son any direction, and today he is a drug addict and is unemployed.

I recently met a Malay woman who owns and manages a successful restaurant in London. She said, "The people who are betraying the Malays are the Malays themselves." She rattled off the names of Malays who had cheated and stolen from Felda, Tabung Haji and other Malay institutions.

On the other hand, in the previous month, three successful professional Malays living in Malaysia told me the non-Malays should not demand too much if they wanted to live in Malaysia.

They each said the Chinese were a threat to them, but when I asked how the Chinese posed a threat, they could only repeat the political propaganda, which we hear so often, "The DAP have a pact with Singapore to make it a Chinese-dominated country and the Malays will surely lose their rights. The Chinese will get rid of Islam and install Christianity as the state religion. They will also get rid of the Sultans." So, are the Malays very insecure, extremely gullible, or both?

They have been brainwashed into thinking that the Chinese are the enemy, and they fail to criticize the Malay leaders involved in large-scale corruption. They also fail to censure the Malays who contribute to the high consumption of internet porn on the east coast, the drug taking, incest and the high percentage of the Malay community infected with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV/AIDS.

There are large numbers of Malay divorces and a high proportion of single mothers compared to the other races. The Malay social fabric is at risk of disentangling. Religion has not managed to reduce the drug taking, incestuous relationships, teenage pregnancies or large-scale corruption and theft of public money.

The majority of Malay women are afraid to speak out against child marriages or polygamy. To make things worse, the NEP has only made elite Malays richer and ignored the needs of poorer Malays. So, tell me, are the DAP, the Chinese or the communists, the real enemy of the Malays - Mariam Mokhtar
