The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) operations review panel is satisfied with the commission's investigation that cleared attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail of a corruption allegation related to his haj pilgrimage. At a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today, panel chairperson Hadenan Abdul Jalil said the investigation found no proof of Abdul Gani's haj pilgrimage having been sponsored by others.
“The panel is satisfied that the investigation did not indicate any criminal offence,” Hadenan said.
He added that the investigation showed Gani had paid for the haj trip from his own account and there was no proof to show that the money came from other or illicit sources.
Gani had come under fire in January this year after allegations surfaced on the Internet, alleging that he had links with former Malaysia Airlines chairperson Tajuddin Ramli, who was being investigated by the MACC.
According Raja Petra Kamaruddin's website Malaysia Today, Gani went on a sponsored haj trip together with Tajudin's associate Shahidan Shafie. In return, it was alleged that the AG decided not to press charges against Tajuddin over the national carrier's losses, which ran into billions of ringgit.

Kenyataan BANGANG TPM 1Malaysia....

Power tariff hike akin to 'daylight robbery'...
PKR has termed the hike in electricity tariff announced yesterday as "daylight robbery" as it benefits capitalists at the expense of the people.
According to party chief of strategy Rafizi Ramli (left), the fine print in the government's announcement shows that the increase in cost borne by the independent power providers will in effect be passed to TNB, which will in turn pass it to end users in the form of tariff hikes.
Worse still, the new mechanism will mean that consumers will face electricity tariff hikes twice a year, since under the new "fuel cost pass through" mechanism, the cost of coal and gas used in power generation will be reviewed on a six-monthly basis.
"TNB achieves a status quo financially, the people bear the burden from the tariff hikes and the IPPs are not affected at all from this exercise because of the fuel cost pass through mechanism.
"This is really robbing the rakyat to feed the crony-capitalists," Rafizi told reporters today. He added that the tariff hike is likely to bring inflation levels to 2006 rates - the second highest in the past decade after the major spike in 2008.
"BN is repeating the same prescription in 2006 to 2011 - a combination of price increases for basic goods that include sugar, petrol, diesel and now electricity.
"The combined effect of this will see the inflation for 2011 surpassing that of 2006 and inflict difficulties to millions of households whose meager disposable income will be reduced further," he said.
Economists have warned that while 75 percent of households will escape the direct effect of the tariff hike, they will be burdened by a rise in inflation as industries pass on increased costs.
Wage hike not catching up with inflation
Food prices, which already recorded among the highest rate in April's inflation figures, is expected to be among the most severely hit.
Rafizi added that while Malaysian inflation rates have been lower than regional figures, its rise in wages have been dismal in comparison.
"In Indonesia the inflation rate may be in the region of 5 percent, which is higher than our 3.2 percent but their wage rise is about 10 percent on average. Ours have been 2.6 percent for the past ten years, which means our incomes are growing smaller every year," he said.
He also noted that low to middle income earners may also see higher tariffs as many users in this income bracket live in shared houses, and share the same electricity meter which would record usage higher than 300kWh.
"Ten people can be sharing the same electricity meter, which could record more than RM77 worth of electricity usage, but this does not mean there has been overconsumption," he said.
Felda must explain RM6 billion loan
Meanwhile, PKR central leadership council member and former deputy minister for land and cooperative development Dr Tan Kee Kwong questioned why the Federal Land Agency has reportedly taken a RM6 billion loan from the Employee Provident Fund.
"I want Felda to explain why they have had to borrow RM6 billion from the EPF. Is it true? It has been a week since the news broke out and there has only been silence so we can only assume it is true," he said.
Tan, who was in charge of Felda from 1999 to 2004 added that with crude oil palm prices at a high of RM2800 to RM3000 per tonne, Felda should in fact be reaping RM2 billion in profits per year and should not be taking loans. He also questioned Felda's business sense, as taking a whopping loan of RM6 billion would mean that the agency should have cash reserves of at least the same amount.
However, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Ahmad Maslan last year said that Felda's reserves were at RM4.08 billion in 2004 but dropped to RM1.35 billion in 2009. But Ahmad clarified that the agency's reserve is stable with assets amounting to RM12.2 billion.
The revelation of the RM6 billion loan by Felda was made by PAS-linked NGO Persatuan Anak Peneroka Felda Kebangsaan (Anak) who produced meeting minutes by one of the agency's 300 settlements, Felda Nitar 02, referring to the loan.

Electricity up 7% or 2.23 sen/kWh to 33.54 sen/kWh....
Prime Minister Najib Razak has announced a hike in electricity rates that will see consumers paying an average of 7.12 per cent higher beginning June 1. But while he tried to soften the blow for the poorest in the country, he failed to implement a plan to sustainably keep prices down and reduce national debt.
Najib was also sharply rebuked for announcing "short-term" measures to facilitate snap general elections that pundits now predict will be in July or after Hari Raya in August. There is concern that once the elections are over, Najib will step up the price hikes as he tries to control the budget deficit and reduce government debt.
"Subsidies have to come down, that's for sure. But corruption, wastage and so forth must also be tackled. What Malaysia is a grand plan to tackle inflation and contain the widening deficit rather than ad-hoc measures," Ramon Navaratnam, head of the Centre for Public Policy Studies, told Malaysia Chronicle.
In line with a much-criticised programme to cut subsidies on a range of consumer essentials, such as petrol, fuel and sugar, government officials announced on Monday that power prices would rise by 2.23 sen per kilowatt hour or 7.12 per cent to to 33.54 sen kWh, from 31.31 sen kWh. Domestic users who use less than 300kW unit per month will not be affected.
The multi-tiered price hike was announced at a joint press conference by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nor Mohamed Yakcop and Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Peter Chin Fah Kui. They took pains to stress that the move will not affect "75 per cent of the population", as most households consume less than 300 kWh per month. According to them, 4.44 million out of a total 5.94 million households used less than 300kWh.
However, while hardest hit will be the industries, businesses are bound to transfer costs over to end users. In this case, consumers can expect all-round price increases down the road including on food and transportation.
Lack of long-term measures to cut wastage and graft
For those using 301kW to 1000kW units, the tariff has been raised from 0.1 to 10 percent, or RM0.07 to RM30.30. However, the officials also said the waiving of electricity charges for those who record less than RM20 usage per month would cease on December 2011.
Natural gas prices would also rise by RM3.00 per mmBtu every six months until it reached market levels by 2016, when its price would be fully floated. The price charged by state oil company Petronas for power generation would rise to RM13.70 per mmBtu from RM10.70, the officials added.
"It is commendable that the government has tried to structure the price rise so that the heavy users are the ones who will have to pay for their usage. But it would have been best if the price rises are announced together with other anti-inflationary measures," Ramon said.
"These include programs to trim the fat from other parts of the government machinery, cutting projects that are non-essential, corruption and wastage must be confronted head-on. Then only will there be public confidence and investor confidence as well."
Meanwhile, in an immediate response, Pakatan Rakyat leaders said the latest hikes showed that the 13th general election would surely be called within months. They slammed the measures as temporary ad-hoc steps to facilitate the GE, and also expressed disappointment that the plan did not contain wider-ranging features to keep inflation from spiralling.
"It is clear the government can no longer cap inflation and price hikes anymore. The BN will now have to rush for general election before the economy worsens," PKR vice president Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.

'Umno offered 3 ministers' posts to form unity gov't'...
PAS has again alleged that Umno had recently approached spiritual adviser Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, up to five times and with an offer of three ministerial posts, to persuade the Islamic party to form a unity government with BN.
According to the PAS' Pasir Puteh MP Muhammad Husain, Nik Aziz revealed these latest overtures at a gathering of the Kelantan diaspora in Dengkil, Selangor.
"Yes, it is true. He said there were five meetings. It happened recently. It was related to cooperation between PAS and Umno," said Muhammad Husain, who was at the gathering.
He also claimed that the Nik Aziz, who is Kelantan menteri besar, had told the gathering that PAS had been offered three ministerial posts if it agrees to form a joint government with BN.
Nik Aziz, a respected Islamic scholar, has been a vocal critic of cooperation with Umno, constantly reminding embers and leaders about PAS' bad experience in having formed an alliance with Umno in the 1970s. The idea of forming an unity government with Umno has been raised at almost all party polls in recent years although delegates had rejected the proposal at the 2008 Muktamar (annual assembly).
According to Muhammad, Nik Aziz had downright rejected the latest deal as PAS already has a pact with DAP and PKR under Pakatan Rakyat. He said Nik Aziz told the gathering that Umno had been attempting to convince PAS since April last year when Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak was toying with the idea of both Malay-centric parties working together.
Muhammad said the gathering attracted about 500 people, including PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution and parliamentarians Abdul Aziz Abdul Kadir (PKR-Ketereh), Abdullah Sani (PKR-Kuala Langat). This was confirmed by others who were at the high-tea event, and who also expressed shock at Nik Aziz's revelation.

Scorpene 'kicbacks' heads for French court....
Suara Rakyat Malaysia’s (Suaram) suit in a French court over the controversial Scorpene deal will soon enter the full trial stage, which could see top government officials, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, being asked to testify.
Suaram leaders told a press conference today that its December 2009 suit against DCNS, the French makers of the Scorpene submarine, was nearing the end of its inquiry stage and its lawyers in France were confident they had enough evidence to move into full trial.
Cynthia Gabriel, a Suaram director, announced that an application had already been filed in March this year to a French court for an instruction judge and if evidence was sufficient, the case would be brought for trial in open court.
She said this meant that top Malaysian officials, particularly the Defence Ministry and those involved in the 2002 procurement, said to cost RM6.7 billion, could be summoned as witnesses in the trial.
In a statement yesterday, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi said he was prepared to testify in court, provided that Cabinet gives him the green light to do so.
Gabriel also noted today that the case could open up a can of worms as it could shed more light on the murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaaribuu.
The gruesome murder in 2006 has been often linked by the opposition and critics of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government to the multibillion ringgit Scorpene deal.
Altantuya was the jilted lover of Abdul Razak Baginda, a shareholder of Perimekar Sdn Bhd which was directly involved in the procurement of the submarines. Abdul Razak is also the close associate of Najib, who was Defence Minister at the time.

Anwar - Dr M threatened me before sacking...
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed gave him an ultimatum in 1998, a day before his sacking as the deputy prime minister.
According to Anwar, the former prime minister told him to voluntarily step down as DPM and in return, he would receive some form of monetary compensation, but if he did not comply with this, charges would be framed against him (Anwar).
“Mahathir told me...you have wife, a family, its better if you resign voluntarily, if not charges will be brought against you,” Anwar said today during a dialogue with young professionals.
The PKR defacto leader’s remarks were in response to a question from the audience asking him if it was true that such a situation had occured, and was highlighted by writer Ziauddin Sardar in a book.
“Yes, it is true because I told him (Ziauddin) that...I also went against Dr Mahathir, and was wrongfully imprisoned and subsequently beaten half to death.
“It was the only time I spoke harshly to him (Dr Mahathir),” said Anwar. He said that he bore no ill-will and grudges against his former mentor, and forgave him for what happened.
Anwar was charged with sodomy and corruption in 1998 after he was sacked from the Cabinet and was later convicted and jailed for both offences.
He was freed in September 2004 and later resurrected his political career by winning back his Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat in a by-election in 2008, which had been held in the interim by his wife.
He led the loose pact of PKR, the DAP and PAS to a historic sweep of five states and 82 parliamentary seats in Election 2008. But the 63-year-old PKR de facto leader is currently facing sodomy charges for the second time in his life.
He has denied the charge, describing it as “evil, frivolous lies by those in power” when the charge was read out to him. He is charged under section 377B of the Penal Code and can be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years’ jail and whipping upon conviction.
The trial began 18 months after Anwar was charged in court in August 2008.

Today the non-Malays praise moderate PAS...
PAS, a political party in the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, is a shining example of moderate Islam.
PAS leaders continue to espouse their struggle to uphold the sanctity of Islam, as well as to protect Malaysians of all races regardless of their faiths. Refusing to be racially biased, which is wrong in Islam, PAS is regarded by many Malays with respect.
This poses a big headache for UMNO as PAS seems to be the opposite of what UMNO represents. PAS continues to fend off the unfair abuses hurled at the non-Muslims and non-Malays by UMNO, while holding on to their struggle for a just and caring Islamic state that does not discriminate against other religions.
PAS' extremist and fundamentalist tag so unfairly pinned on it by UMNO no longers frightens the nation. Instead, the non-Muslims and non-Malays see in PAS an umbrella, a champion for justice against the cruel oppression of UMNO. Today, PAS is the biggest stumbling block to UMNO’s future plans, which are about to disintegrate.
Together with DAP and PKR, PAS will be a blessing for this country. If the Pakatan coalition goes on to rule this nation, PAS can count on its partners for support and advice and together they can govern Malaysia with wisdom and integrity.
Sadly, the Barisan Nasional has not learnt its lesson after its trouncing in the last GE. It has not acknowledged its mistakes, nor has it repented. It is still a big bully, stubborn and deaf to the wishes of the people and it is still taking the people for granted. It is time to call their bluff.
After all, if Pakatan Rakyat misbehaves, Malaysians can still return the mandate to the BN in five years' time. Looking back to the last GE in 2008, BN managed to scrape through because of the non-Malay vote.
It will be interesting to see if Sabah and Sarawak will continue to support BN this time around. Unable to regain support from the non-Malay electorate, it will be up to the Bumiputras in East Malaysia to decide the BN’s fate. A sad indictment on Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is also president of UMNO.

Anwar - Umno amal ciri2 pemerintahan Firaun...
Anwar Ibrahim berkata sistem amalan pemerintahan Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) kini kian menyimpang dari landasan Islam apabila cuba menghidupkan kembali ciri-ciri masyarakat Jahiliah yang menyamai corak pemerintah Firaun.
Katanya, ini kerana Umno-BN bukan sahaja membiarkan budaya fitnah berleluasa sebaliknya mempertahankan tindakan tersebut.
“Fitnah bukan sahaja dibiar, tetapi dipertahankan.
“Kita lawan orang zalim, kita lawan sistem zalim. Memperbodohkan rakyat – itu saya tolak dan tentang.
“Bagaimana parti yang memerintah sanggup berbuat begini? Umno memperbodohkan umat.

A PM of fluff and puff....
They are corrupt, have brought the country precariously close to bankruptcy through thievery and incompetence and have divided Malaysia and yet they borrow imagery and ideas from glorious historical events like Martin Luther King’s million man march and the gathering in the square just before Egyptian President Hosni Mobarak ouster.
Such shameful characters and they think that they deserve our support. I am referring to Najib Razak and his band of bandits (otherwise known as Umno/Barisan Nasional).
Today, they hosted some so-called festival in Putrajaya where apparently one million youth turned up. Organised some futsal, had some rock music, gave away free gifts and food and then Najib urged the youth to help defend Putrajaya from Pakatan Rakyat.
Not save Malaysia from corruption, racism, racial polarisation, mediocre education system, breakdown of all institutions in the country and the slow but seemingly inescapable decline of a country which once showed much promise.
No, Najib wants young Malaysians to use their precious vote to keep his corrupt band of politicians in employ so that they can continue to milk the country dry; to amaze us with their incompetence and continue to set us on a path of division and damnation.
Najib and his friends want young Malaysians to use their precious vote so that Ibrahim Ali and Perkasa can have a carte blanche to tear this country asunder with their right wing ideals and so that discredited personalities like Rahim Thamby Chik can regale us with more porn videos.
Just like Abdullah Badawi, Najib has been good with his words and show. In short, great with fluff and not very good with substance. This country is not well, and has not been for a while. But instead of any serious attempt to tackle issues, there is a lot of song and dance. – Ali Kadir

GE13 - A fulcrum for change...
People in the Malaysian 'political class' are now all excited over the impending general election, speculated to be held anytime after July 2011. Malaysia now sits at the fulcrum of her history. This election can open up opportunities for major political change, which may alter the face of the nation forever.
At the moment, BN maintains its grip, as it still commands a simple majority in Parliament, while holding onto power in 9 of the 13 states. But after the political tsunami of 2008, BN can no longer regard its political dominance as sacrosanct, for the world is a fast changing place.
The poll results of 2008 came as a complete surprise, and even the Pakatan Rakyat coalition did not expect to make such gains in the final parliamentary and state election tallies. What Malaysians will face in the next general election is anybody's guess.
A general election in Malaysia is the single most important event in the political life of the nation. In a (largely) democratic country like Malaysia, the general election is the only venue for citizens to change their government by peaceful means, through the ballot box. We have never had an alternative government to the BN at the federal level, so will this be the first time that the Pakatan opposition can form an alternative government peacefully?
Politics, mankind's fickle child
On the surface, it looks like the BN hold on power is unshakeable. But politics is full of unpredictable public events, and nobody has the perfect crystal ball to predict exactly what will happen next. In any general election, the problems facing the participants and the contesting parties are gargantuan, and involve nothing less than a logistics nightmare.
The whole organisation of each of the numerous political parties has to be mobilised. There will be many dry runs before the actual polls to iron out the kinks existing in every party and its support groups. Even now, as all the parties are gearing up, both the BN and the Pakatan Rakyat alliances have to streamline their campaign organisations to full fitness.
Tens of thousands, and perhaps more, workers will have to be registered and recruited, to get ready for the big day of nomination and the even bigger polling day. Large armies of party officials and workers will have to be organised and trained. They will need to have their individual assignments and tasks clearly explained to them.
Campaign funds will have to be solicited, in the tens or hundreds of millions, and be distributed to all corners of the country. This will be followed by massive training of countless supporters to serve as election return officers, polling and counting agents.
General elections logistics nightmare
Election officials, those running the actual polling, will all have to be transported and fed.
No election is complete without the armies of flag-waving and slogan-shouting campaign workers. A single constituency may have many thousands of party workers and supporters.
Extrapolate this to the national scenario of 222 parliamentary constituencies, and many hundreds more state constituencies, and the total number of people to be mobilized on polling day could be in the millions, throughout the whole country. And thousands more of our police personnel will also have to mobilised to maintain law and order. All of us will have a role to play to ensure peace, and to make certain that the confusing polling process will not run awry.
When I come to think of it, that general elections are run smoothly, by and large, is nothing short of a miracle. So many things can go wrong to disrupt the proceedings of election campaigns in all corners of Malaysia. This peace is a testimony to the maturity of our citizens in making their political choice individually, without much fanfare, and recourse to violent means. Despite many weaknesses in our electoral system, the observation that we can still choose our government peacefully is evidence that democracy in Malaysia has a bright future.
I am still hoping that the BN government will fall, with the Pakatan Rakyat forming the next alternative government. I remain convinced that a two-party system is the most healthy political scenario in Malaysia. As they say, the rest is up to God! - - Sim Kwang Yang
