Melayu tak digalakkan bertanya,why?...

Kalau ditanya tentang minda orang Melayu kepada saya, saya rasa Melayu tidak sanggup berubah. Perspektif mereka terhad, tidak suka menyiasat dan mereka tidak mahu berfikir dengan mendalam.

Kalau kita tengok orang Melayu dalam cerita hikayat, Hikayat Raja-Raja Pasai misalnya, ia cukup menarik. Kita dapat menggambarkan bagaimana ekonominya dan strategi orang Melayu memerintah untuk berdepan dengan Majapahit.

Berdasarkan hikayat itu dan tradisi pantun Melayu, kita dapati orang Melayu ini mempunyai minda yang canggih. Tetapi yang jadi tragedi ialah orang Melayu tidak nampak ini semua kerana tiga pengaruh besar.

Pertama, dalam tahun 1920-an dan 1930-an, pihak penjajah British menolak apa yang datang daripada Melayu, termasuk pantun, sebagai folk art, menjadikan apa yang dihasilkan oleh Melayu sebagai second class.

Ketika itu, Melayu yang berharap untuk naik pangkat dan dapat kerja dengan kerajaan penjajah terpaksa ikut teori penjajah Inggeris. Ini semua membawa orang Melayu kepada perspektif jati diri yang salah.Itu pengaruh penjajah.

Pada zaman ini, saya melihat sungguhpun banyak pemimpin Melayu bercakap tentang sains dan teknologi, orang Melayu pada umumnya tidak dapat menangkap pandangan itu.

Di Eropah, sejak zaman renaissance, mereka telah mempelajari kemajuan sains dengan pendekatan yang berbeza dengan Islam. Mereka sentiasa bertanya.

Malangnya, di Malaysia, dari bangku sekolah kita tidak galakkan budak-budak bertanya. Sampailah mereka di universiti, kita tidak galakkan mereka bertanya: Kenapa?

Di negara kita, pelajar tidak berani bertanya dan guru-guru pula tidak tahu menjawab. Budaya ini menunjukkan tidak wujudnya inquiry mind dalam masyarakat Melayu. Kita tidak ada sikap saintifik.

Sikap negatif inilah yang menyebabkan berleluasanya cerita orang kena tipu dengan bomoh. Yang saya hairan, graduan-graduan universiti pun kena tipu dengan bomoh.

Kalau pada kurun ke-18, terutama di England, orang selalu bertanya: Kalau betul ada hantu, mana hantu? Kita hendak pergi ke tempat hantu, kita nak pergi tengok hantu untuk lihat apa manifestasi hantu.

Pendekatan berani bertanya ini adalah sikap masyarakat dan tamadun yang berasaskan sains. Malangnya, kita tidak sedia dan berani bertanya, yang akhirnya menyebabkan kita tidak berani menghadapi cabaran. Pemikiran Melayu ini sebahagiannya adalah sisa-sisa pengaruh penjajahan British. Ini bukan rahsia lagi.

Kita boleh membaca dokumen-dokumen itu di London. Menurut para pegawai Inggeris, orang Melayu ini kalau diberi terlalu banyak pendidikan dan kalau diajar ilmu sains, kelak mereka akan jadi seperti orang India di India. Mereka akan berdemonstrasi dan hendakkan kebebasan.

Jadi ajarlah dia cerita Pak Pandir sahaja, itu sikit, ini sikit. Orang Melayu tidak suka sains, dia suka agama, jadi ajarlah tentang agama. Dia suka dengan raja dia, ajar Melayu buat bakul.

Akibat dasar itu, tidak ada trouble makers. Trouble makers Melayu hanya timbul selepas Perang Dunia Kedua setelah kemasukan Jepun.

Telah ada banyak buku yang membincangkan tentang subjek bagaimana British berjaya mengamalkan dasar yang mengongkong minda Melayu. Itu semasa penjajahan. Selepas kita merdeka, minda orang Melayu masih terkongkong kerana semua orang Melayu kemudiannya gila hendak kuasa dan hendak jadi kaya.

Ini adalah teori saya mengapa minda Melayu tidak berubah. Saya bertanggungjawab tentang pandangan ini. Selepas merdeka, sesetengah orang Melayu yang ada kuasa, dia rasa dia boleh memerintah Malaysia sama bagus macam penjajah British.

Minda Melayu ini sentiasa ada sesuatu yang membendung dan mempengaruhi – daripada kesan-kesan kolonialisasi pada tahun-tahun 1930-an, pengaruh Indonesia yang tidak sesuai di sini pada tahun 1940-an dan 1950-an, kesan media massa, dan kemudiannya budaya wang dalam masyarakat Melayu pada dekad-dekad terakhir ini. Sekarang ini semua orang Melayu hendak kaya. (bersambung) - Prof diRaja Ungku Aziz

Malays and Muslim, two of a kind. 

Corrupt and Arrogant...

The Malays are a broken people. Broken by our own leaders. Broken by the antics, greed, and hubris of Malay political leaders lost in a world where self-interest and nothing else, matters. It is a world where these political pariahs take every advantage of any opportunity to make themselves some money.

Whether these political pariahs are stealing money from Tabung Haji where Malays have saved their hard-earned cash in order to do their holy pilgrimage to Mecca, or getting commission and kickbacks in the purchase of Covid 19 vaccines which are critical to the saving of Malaysian lives  – especially the most vulnerable Malaysians  – the old and those in the front lines fighting the pandemic by putting their own lives in danger.

Whether it is playing Russian roulette with the lives of our Armed Forces by purchasing submarines and weapons not fit for purpose that could result in the death of our Armed forces or not providing them with Helicopters and weapons that they need to defend our nation and our people against any encroachments from without.

Our children’s education is disadvantaged by the hundreds of millions siphoned from the Ministry of Education budget. Money allocated to buy solar panels, laptop, text books and the construction of schools to anything else that our children would need for their education – the contracts to supply these items are grossly inflated to pay off politicians and even the ex PM’s wife, Rosmah Mansor.

They even take money from suppliers of food and drinks for our students. There is simply no limit to what these political pariahs will do to make money. And as if the education of our children is not sacred enough for them to leave alone, the Islamic religion is also a source of funds for these political pariahs. They have no shame, they have no sense of fairness and certainly, there are without morals and ethics in their greed for anything they consider of value for themselves.

And the most despicable of things they do is for PAS to use Islam to benefit their political pariahs. And as if it is not enough that these political pariahs steal, their wives, children, and extended family are also into the thieving. 

I spit upon these political pariahs. These political pariahs are still today free to roam and plunder our nation at will.  All of them Malays. Most of them are old. All of them must be discarded and punished for what they have done in plundering our national coffers. What they have plundered from our coffers must be taken back from them and put to good use to help our nation get back on its feet and prosper.    

The narrative spun over and over again: that the Christians will destroy Islam, that the Chinese and DAP will take over the country, and that the Malays must have the political power to survive in their own Tanah Air is stale and are no longer relevant in the world the Malays live in today.

Let us get rid of these Malay political pariahs and banish them where they can no longer shame the Malays by what they do. We know who they are, and it is time that these political pariahs be held to account for what they have done to the Malays.

Whether they are Prime Ministers, Ministers, Menteri Besar, all those loathsome and despicable Yang Berhormats or those little Napoleons who think that being a Malay gives them license to behave in an obnoxious manner to other Malays, and anybody else that question their plundering of our nation’s resources.

Let us start by making sure the Father of all Plunderers, Najib Razak, is incarcerated immediately, to be followed by his wife, Rosmah Mansor and anyone else who has been the cause of the fall and fall of the Malays. 

Today I am ashamed to call myself a Malay. Being a Malay means you have to take responsibility for what these Malay Political Pariahs have done. Today being a Muslim in Malaysia is nothing to be proud of because all these plunderers, thieves, and scammers are Muslim. The non-Malays do not have to tell us these things.

There are many Malays today who can think, and we know what Malays have done to our country. You do not have to tell us how much the non-Malays have contributed to the development of Malaysia. We Malays know. You do not have to tell us that Malaysia is also your home. That too, we know. And we know that the Malays have been left behind by the others because it is all there for the Malays to see.

The best politicians are not Malays. The least corrupted politicians are not Malays. The most hard-working politicians who deliver on their promise to their electorates are not Malays. But this much we Malays know.  The most corrupted politicians in Malaysia are Muslims. The most arrogant politicians are Muslims. And the politicians who do not deliver on their election promise are also Muslims.

So there you have it, this nation of ours has been brought to its knees by corruption and the political shenanigans and devious duplicity of these Malays and Muslims. And you and I know that it will also have to be the Malays and Muslims who will have to work to get these political pariahs into the dock, to be tried, convicted, and incarcerated if there is to be any hope for our nation to survive past 2020. Pak Ungku and Tabung Haji...

Yes Pak Ungku, pet name for Prof Ungku Aziz, was the brain behind setting up Tabung Haji as a pilgrimage savings fund for Muslims. Based on the same concept as the Employees Provident Fund which was founded in 1948(?) for employees in the private sector to save for their retirement.

Both the EPF and TH invest their funds in the financial markets (equities and bonds) to earn the dividend incomes so that they can pay dividends to their depositors . They also invest in direct investments in commercial companies.

TH however made some bad investments. It owns subsidiary companies that fail to perform. Nevertheless, it continued to pay good dividends to TH depositors despite the losing investments, by digging into the reserves . Not one year but over some years. BNM began to feel uneasy about this dividend policy of TH. This prompted TS Zeti, Pak Ungku’s daughter, when she was governor BNM, to send a letter warning TH that such dividend payments were untenable.

Although BNM has no direct control over TH under the Financial Services Act, it has the over arching responsibility to protect the financial and banking system from being affected by non banking institutions acting in a manner not conducive to the stability of the system. Unfortunately, TH did not act on BNM’s advice. Finally, TH had to be rescued as its non-performing assets were becoming too corrosive for comfort .. This was done during the PH goverment — the MoF under Lim Guan Eng set up the SPV called Urusharta Jemaah to do the rescue operation by taking over its non-performing assets. This SPV like other SPVs was set up as an MoF Inc company. But some Malay politicians quickly seized on the political opportunity to label the MoF Inc SPV as a DAP conspiracy to seize TH assets and destroy TH, an institution dear to the hearts of all Malays and an Islamic institution that’s a model to the Muslim world

I wrote an article defending the rationale behind the SPV because being a Treasury man, I could understand the SPV. But the Malay sentiment against LGE was too strong. Even today, some Malays point to the TH to prove their point that the DAP is anti-Malay. It’s that kind of nonsense that’s not fair to LGE and DAP. LGE acted in good faith on the advice of BNM, Ungku Aziz’s daughter — TS Zeti, one of the best central bankers in the Commonwealth.

Can Harapan move on 

from Anwar Ibrahim?...

The problem with Pakatan Harapan’s leadership issue is that nobody is stepping up and challenging Anwar Ibrahim for the top job. Folks complain and moan about his leadership, but nobody wants to step up and offer an alternative vision.

Mainstream Harapan dogma, compromises of bromides like “reform agenda” and challenging the status quo but everything that Harapan has demonstrated so far is politics as usual for the opposition.  How can the base evaluate if someone is capable of leading the opposition charge when nobody wants to put their political careers on the line?

Sure, Shafie Apdal and the two-times former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as recent as September was still advocating for Shafie, saying "he is still one of the candidates”, and of course the very public statements from various political operatives of the manoeuvrings within Harapan to realise this possibility destabilised the opposition instead of galvanising it.

Anwar has bungled so many times that not resigning now as some claimed he would, would be just farcical. Of course, if he resigns who would replace him? That is the tragedy, that there are no leaders groomed to take over.

There are no political operatives who have the will and charisma to assume leadership. There is no succession plan for PKR, and everyone is betting on Anwar Ibrahim. This is an extremely dangerous situation to be in. Ironically it was Azmin Ali who was power-hungry enough and had the political skillsets to engineer a coup that Harapan base wishes Harapan leaders had. 

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim (above) said that Harapan needs consensus on leadership and Anwar should be chosen. But this would mean that Harapan and the base need to ignore every wrong move that Anwar made and pretend that his leadership has benefited the opposition.

As I said in my last piece that Shafie is right that there needs to be a change of leadership and direction but I did not think Shafie was it. Mind you, if he actually came out and challenged Anwar for the leadership of Harapan instead of these weasel-worded attacks then a review is in order and the base should give Shafie a fair hearing. 

Keep in mind what the old maverick said during a campaign stump during the last Sabah elections that a vote for Shafie was a vote for him. Oh, dear. Meanwhile, anyone who attempts to deviate from Anwar dogma and attempts to criticise the PKR leadership is publicly excoriated.

This, of course, is extremely funny because when Azmin was making all those moves that eventually brought down the Harapan government, Anwar and his coterie did nothing but bury their heads in the sand and told the base that all of this was a figment of press imagination.

To be fair to Anwar - and I am loath to be “fair” when it comes to politicians - Harapan has never fully committed to Anwar becoming the next prime minister. It was excruciating seeing how many political operatives were bending the knee to the old maverick while chastising Anwar for wanting a timetable for a hand over of power.

During the old mavericks brief reign, Anwar was made to look like the one who could not play well with others, all the while because of his ineptitude with dealing with Azmin, the Harapan house of cards came crashing down.

Rafizi Ramli (above) breaking his silence and warning of scoundrels surrounding Anwar is a good political narrative but it also points to the fact that if Anwar is so weak-willed as to be easily influenced by scoundrels, how on earth is he going to stand up against the mainstream Malay political establishment?

Anwar has never known who his friends and allies were, and this is extremely dangerous for political operative manoeuvring in a political terrain dominated by race and religion.

Running to the palace, not telling his allies what his plans were and destroying the credibility of his partners are making the job easier for Perikatan Nasional, Umno and PAS. How can someone like this lead Harapan?

Mahathir when he was in power bent the establishment to his will. He knew when to use the carrot and when to wield the stick. All Anwar can come up with is, “don’t spook the Malays”. Even now when he attempts to spin the budget fiasco as some sort of victory nobody believes it.

Yes, PN is weak but the problem is that Harapan is weaker and mostly because of the strategies on Anwar. The fact that there are those in Harapan who still want to return to Mahathir should tell you how screwed up all of this is.

If only Anwar had kept his mouth shut, not attempted his various farcical counter-coups, strengthened his power base within the opposition while opposing the machinations political and social of the PN regime, his loss in the budget vote could have been spun as a loss for a government with only a three-vote “majority”.

The fact that Anwar can claim that some MPs voiced opposition to the budget in private but still voted for it, is demonstrative of his lack of political skills not to mention basic common sense. Politicians will say anything in private, especially when they are trying to manipulate the leader of the opposition for their benefit.

While Anwar claims that political operatives were hesitant to vote against the budget because PN state erroneously linked the budget to the functioning of the civil service and payment of salaries, the same could be said of him and his waffling at various stages of voting for the budget. Anwar is projecting when he talks like this and it is obvious to anyone who has followed this fiasco, that it is Anwar who has failed in the leadership test.

Anwar’s loyalists tell me, that now that this budget issue is over, Anwar can fully turn his attention to the next general election. He can finally be free of all “these temptations” to dethrone the PN government and commit to building and rebranding the coalition. The fact that they can say this is indicative of what they actually thought of those stratagems that Anwar employed to the lead up the budget reading.

Harapan needs to be united under strong decisive leadership. The tragedy is that nobody is stepping up to the plate. It is not that PKR needs to be honest about Anwar, it is that Harapan needs to decide what kind of coalition it is and if Anwar still is the only person who can lead it. Harapan should stop acting like a suicide pact. - S Thayaparan.mk

Sanusi, don't play with water...

Penang and Kedah are states in Malaysia and not foreign countries and therefore it is illogical for Kedah Menteri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor to treat its neighbour like an outsider over the issue of water supply. Sanusi cited a law to buttress his argument that the days of free water are over for Penang. But he interpreted the law his own way. 

In his befogged mind, he sees the law as an agreement to supply water to Penang but not as a guarantee of "free raw water supply forever". It follows that an agreement is not biding because it does not have the quality of a rock-solid guarantee. Absurd. So, this PAS politician is now banging the table, demanding Penang pay RM50 million in annual compensation for drawing water from its (Penang's) side of Sungai Muda, which flows from Kedah.

Sanusi is playing politics with water, which is as dangerous as playing with fire. Water, which is a gift from God and not from Sanusi, is what sustains life. It is what moves the economy. Without water, no living thing can survive.

Water is precious and should never be under the sole jurisdiction of states. When a state controls its supply, especially when it shares water with another state from a common river, it can be opened to abuse and even lead to hostility.

When the source of water originates from a state, and flows into a neighbouring state, the former can play politics with its supply. In Malaysia, it is all too clear that politics is at the centre of the "water war" between Kedah and Penang. 

PAS and DAP are bitter enemies. PAS controls Kedah and DAP is the political master of Penang. The two parties are bitter enemies. Since the source of water flowing into Sungai Muda originates from the forest area of Ulu Muda in Kedah, the opportunity to "dirty" the water - to play politics - is not to be missed. Hence, Sanusi saw an opening when Penang expressed concern over Kedah's move to approve large-scale mining of rare earth elements near the water catchment area of Ulu Muda. This lit the fuse.

Immediately, Sanusi retaliated by raising hell over the water issue with Penang. In essence, it is PAS hitting out at the DAP in a continuing political struggle for the soul of Malaysia. Sanusi doesn't want to or refuses to see the danger posed by such mining activities to the water catchment area in the Ulu Muda forest reserve. The forest reserve is an important water catchment area for Kedah, Penang and Perlis.

The Muda river supplies raw water to these three states and, thus, any mining or logging activity in the forest reserve can severely disrupt water supply to all the three states. But does Sanusi sees the red flag? Penang has a robust economy, but its goal of becoming a high-income economy will be put in jeopardy if it has no water security. Sanusi knows this and so is the federal government.

But the federal government appears not too keen to help resolve the water war. Why? One can only surmise that it will play into its hand to see Kedah squeeze Penang dry to the extent that the people might be frightened into jettisoning the DAP in the coming general election.

In fact, by its behaviour, the federal government doesn't even want to see Penang succeed under an opposition party because such a bright narrative can be seen as a damning indictment of Putrajaya's national policies. If Sanusi can do the job of disrupting the economic progress of Penang, that would be music to the central government. But it would not be easy to turn off the taps.

In the event Sanusi makes good on his joke to dam up the Muda river and deny the 1.7 million people in Penang access to water, it would only drive resilient Penangites to come up with alternative solutions that would make Penang more vibrant, more prosperous, more dynamic than sleepy Kedah. - Philip Rodrigues,mk

Terminating iconic ferry service 

ignores Penang's unique heritage...

The planned termination of the 126-year-old car-carrying ferry service in Penang will take away part of the state's unique heritage and history and ignores the fact that George Town is a Unesco World Heritage Site, said DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

The ferry service is expected to cease operations on Dec 31 and will be replaced by smaller ferries meant only for pedestrians and motorcycles. Commuters in cars would have to use the two Penang bridges to cross the channel.

Lim, who is the former Penang chief minister, expressed frustration with the move to cease the service. "This cold and callous approach totally ignores both Penang’s unique heritage and history, (which plays) an important role as an economic generator of tourism.

"Ending the ferry service will take the romance out of going to Penang in the traditional manner, bearing in mind that George Town is a UNESCO World Heritage city. "Heritage and history are something that money cannot buy and should be treasured for future generations," said Lim in a statement.

He also urged the transport ministry not to "abandon" Penang and its iconic ferry service, adding that many foreign countries still retain their original ferry services. Even though they may not be economical but they are retained due to their intrinsic worth and intangible value to heritage and history, added the Bagan MP.

For the record, Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong revealed in Parliament that only 200,000 vehicles used the ferry service, compared to 1.2 million pedestrians using the same service.

Lim noted that the previous Pakatan Harapan federal government had transferred the management of the ferry service to Penang Port Sdn Bhd from Prasarana Bhd with the understanding that the iconic service must be retained together with cash payments as an incentive.

He accused the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government of "betraying" Penangites with the termination and mentioned that the transport ministry has been insisting on full control over water transport and ferry services in the state since 2015.

"To save the ferry service, the Penang government had offered to take over the entire Penang water transport services and ferry service in 2015 by bearing its costs. "Unfortunately, the Transport Ministry in 2016 refused to grant full authority to the Penang state government and insisted on exercising regulatory control over water transport and ferry services in Penang, even though the Transport Ministry was not footing the bill," said Lim.

Other than the car-carrying ferry service termination, he said this is not the first time Penangites have been "betrayed" by PN. "The RM100 million allocated in the 2020 Budget to build the cable car on Bukit Bendera was also terminated. "Similarly, the promised bank loan guarantees by the previous Harapan government to build the LRT to overcome the chronic traffic congestion in Penang and Seberang Perai was also cancelled," he said. - mk

Setuju 111 vs Tak setuju 108, Gua Musang cabut lari...

So what was Dr Mahathir's Press Conference all about yesterday? Dr Mahathir said, tomorrow the Budget may not get approved, the government might fall, if frogs had wings they would fly, if  a donkey could sing the Negara Ku it could bla bla'. Well nothing of that sort happened. 

 

First of all to the super lembap Malaysian Press why didnt anyone of you ask Dr M how many MPs he had on his side? It is a simple numbers game isnt it? Why didnt you ask Dr M  'Do you have 112 MPs on your side?'  None of you asked that question.  Well the Budget has been approved 112 - 108 or something.

This means the PM is intact for a full year. I keep repeating - there is no political crisis. Everyone just go home. The political crisis is now with Dr Mahathir, PKR and inside UMNO. Dr Mahathir saying that the government is weak is so far quite a misnomer. With only a three seat majority Tan Sri Muhyiddin can get the Budget 2021 approved and he is still in power.

Tengku Ponteng...

In stark contrast in May 2018 Dr Mahathir had a majority of more than 20 MPs yet Dr Mahathir was removed from office after only 22 months. And the PH was kicked out. So even a 20++ seats majority could not guarantee they were a strong government. There is a conspiracy theory which says that the whole thing was just a wayang by Dr Mahathir. To cut Brader Anwar down to size. 

If the dodos do not realise it Dr M has now fully usurped Brader Anwar's role as leader of the Opposition. The real leader of the Opposition is Dr Mahathir Mohamed. Not Brader Anwar. And everytime this 'Vote of no confidence', 'Lets vote against the Budget' etc shenanigans come up, Dr Mahathir hijacks the narrative from Brader Anwar.

As Opposition Leader it is actually Brader Anwar's role to take the lead on issues like 'No Confidence Vote', 'Vote against the Budget' etc. But that is not the case. Each time something like this crops up, Dr M hijacks the discussion and takes charge of the matter. 

Brader Anwar has become a lame duck Opposition Leader. And then whatever is attempted simply fails. The No Confidence Vote against the PM Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was spearheaded by Dr Mahathir. It failed. But it was Brader Anwar who went to the Istana and made a fool of himself. Lembu punya susu sapi punya nama. Dr M punya 'screw up', Brader Anwar punya malu.

Do you all notice that despite making such a big fuss about the No Confidence Vote not once did Dr M make even a tiny suggestion that he would be seeking an audience at the Istana. Why not? Because he knew the No Confidence Vote was NOT going to happen. Its just a wayang. - Syed Akbar Ali

Dr.M and Ku Li had a joint PC and both willing to work together to help revive Malaysia to improve its economy via a more united and stable political situation. The PN govt has no legitimacy with a slim majority of 2 votes in Parliament. So,by their cooperation,they want to have a more stable govt which will attract investments,local and foreign,to bring about economic development,employment and multiplier effects. And to have a consistent and uniform method to fight and contain the covid pandemic.

It looks like its a pre-emptive PC for Dr.M and Ku Li as both trying to influence MPs who will vote for Budget 2021 today - to reject and basically throw out Din's illigetimate govt and to quickly choose a new 'legal govt' which can work for the people's welfare. Dr.M is willing to be PM again if the majority of MPs supports him. Ku Li stated he will not support the Budget today!!! And hope that more MPs vote with their conscience, rather not along party lines,and not to line their own pockets!! Both Dr.M and Ku Li are ready and willing to work even without pay if they can form a new govt... - minah kerang

Is Sanusi brave enough 

to cut water supply?...

 Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has been in the limelight for all the wrong reasons. After justifying the reason why the two Hindu temples were demolished - one to make way for a motorcycle park and the other for a futsal -he has turned to other matters.

He also said the Kedah PAS government would not give financial assistance to Hindu temples. Then he went on to announce the discovery of rare earth elements (REE) in his state promising Kedahans billions in god-given revenue.

He revealed that a local company in Kuala Lumpur would tie-up with a foreign company apparently from China in the extraction of the REE. He hoped that the federal authorities would not put obstacles in the way of the extraction of REE. Sanusi’s grandiose talk of billions to made from the revenue generated by the mining of REE was met with a barrage of criticisms.

Environmental agencies and civil societies urged the federal government to halt the extraction of REE as it would cause irreparable damage to the environment resulting in floods, landslides and disappearance of crucial water catchment areas in the Ulu Muda region.

The CEO of Penang Water Authority (PBA), Jaseni Maidinsa gave a series of press statements, saying how the mining of REE would pose danger to water catchment areas in Kedah affecting water supply to states like Penang and Perlis. More than 80 percent of Penang’s supply is drawn from Sungai Muda but on the Penang side of the river.

The criticisms regarding the exploitation of REE must have irked Sanusi to the extent that he demanded the Penang government pay RM50 million every year to the Kedah government as compensation.

However, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow rebuffed this demand by a swift response by saying that his government would not pay a single cent to Kedah for the extraction of water. This rebuff must have agitated Sanusi for him to issue the threat of cutting water supply to Penang.

He responded by saying that he would get the villagers located on the bank of Sungai Muda to place sandbags to choke off the water supply to Penang. The threat of cutting off the water supply to Penang is serious and a seditious one.

Just imagine that if Sanusi succeeds in cutting off water supply to Penang, more than a million people would be without water. It is not a laughing matter, but one of life and death. Really, if Sanusi is a man of his words, who walks his talks, then I challenge him to take all the necessary steps to block off the water supply to Penang.

I hope he has the courage to do this, but he shouldn’t come out and say that he was using the metaphor of cutting off the water supply, and he really did not mean it. Naturally, just in the case of Indians being high on toddy, he would blame those who misunderstood him for their lack of understanding of Bahasa Malaysia. In other words, Sanusi’s Bahasa Malaysia is so full of metaphors, innuendos and deep meaning, no ordinary Malaysians are capable of understanding.

I think I am beginning to believe that Hindu temple demolitions, the metaphor of high on drinking toddy, Penang to pay for the water supply and the subsequent threat to cut the supply are not wild remarks but strongly interconnected to divert attention from Sanusi’s hallucination to turn Kedah into an El Dorado by the riches derived from REE mining.

El Dorado or the illusory utopia of Wakedah, the people of Kedah are going to suffer from the irresponsible bizarre antics of Sanusi. I wonder if this is the kind of leadership that the pious and god-fearing party like PAS wants to promote. - P.Ramasany,mk

Rafizi warns Anwar about surrounding 

himself with opportunists...

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli today warned his party president Anwar Ibrahim to act immediately against certain individuals in the party whom he considers to be "scoundrels and opportunists" who have surrounded Anwar and brought a dangerous culture to the party.

Rafizi said the "boys" involved only appeared after Anwar was released from prison in 2018 and was viewed as the prime minister in waiting. "These are the boys around Anwar who only appeared after he was released from prison and was the prime minister in waiting," he said in a statement today.

The former Pandan MP said this when commenting on the issue of PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasir, who is alleged to have mocked Anwar in a conversation through the WhatsApp application.  In the leaked messages, Akmal, who is the Johor Bahru MP, was seen criticising Anwar's manoeuvring, including "giving green light" for PKR to publicly quarrel during last year's congress. 

The messages also purportedly showed Akmal saying that he, along with Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar and Subang MP Wong Chen, were prepared to stop Anwar from making his September announcement that he had gained a "formidable" majority to form the new government, something that has yet to materialise.

It is unclear who leaked the message but they have been circulated on social media to brand Akmal a traitor and some PKR Youth leaders push him to resign.This prompted former PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli, who has quit politics, to break his silence, warning Anwar not to surround himself with "opportunist".Rafizi added that Akmal's criticism had basis. Akmal was Rafizi's protégé when he was still in PKR.

Until now, Akmal has been known to be a strong supporter of Anwar and positioned in his camp as opposed to that of former deputy president Azmin Ali who left the party and helped bring down the Pakatan Harapan government, denying Anwar the chance to take over as prime minister.

Rafizi himself, while still a PKR vice-president, has effectively ruled himself out of politics since his defeat to Azmin in the PKR party elections at the end of 2018.

"For the last two years, I have not been involved in the political journey. It is my intention to leave politics to others," he said. "Many are aware that there are some individuals around Anwar that are opportunists who bring a dangerous culture in the party.

"They bring with them a gangster culture and money politics. They walk around sowing money and promises," added Rafizi. "I have reprimanded Anwar for the past two years. So Akmal's reprimand has a basis."

He said Anwar needed to be wise at choosing people around him who are guardians to his office. "At first, he chose Azmin and now we have seen what happens," said Rafizi.

He said those who not present during the darkest days of the Reformasi struggle had suddenly materialised when Anwar was released from prison in 2018.

Rafizi added that Akmal was targeted and bullied for having any independent view, which was viewed as threatening by those surrounding Anwar.

"I'm the type who doesn't like to say the same thing over and over again. If the advice has been given and it seems ineffective, then let Anwar bear the risk of keeping the types of opportunists around him. "I advise everyone who intends to use this party for the sake of wealth and personal position - it is better not to disturb me."

Rafizi also warned that while he may be dormant, he could be stirred into action if provoked. - mk
