Masuk dalam rumah baru tau...

Bila Menteri Kewangan Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz kata, kewangan negara kukuh banyak orang tersalah faham.

Image
Dah tengok akaun terus buat pinjaman Ah Long RM35b...

- A.Kadir Jasin

Bila Menteri Kewangan kata kerajaan akan meminjam wang dari pasaran tempatan, itu maknanya wang simpanan rakyat dah nak kena sakaulah tu.

A prime minister for six months?

Anwar Ibrahim is no longer in prison. There is no longer a need to create an unusual arrangement like Pakatan Harapan did before the 14th general election - Dr Mahathir Mohamad to be the seventh prime minister for two years and hand over the baton to Anwar as the eighth prime minister.

The logic at that time was that a loose two-year timeline would ensure that Anwar is out of Sungai Buloh as a prisoner of conscience. In the stalemate on a prime minister candidate for Pakatan Harapan Plus now, it appears that there are a few options forward:

(a) Mahathir as prime minister and Anwar as deputy prime minister

(b) Mahathir as PM for “several months” and Anwar as DPM

(c) Anwar as PM and Mukhriz Mahathir as DPM

(d) Shafie Apdal or a Sarawak-based party leader as PM

Out of these options, (b) appears to be the most likely outcome. Anwar has held out on option (a) because it puts him in a far worse position compared to before the Sheraton Move – at least back then there was a two-year agreement to hand over power to him.

Option (c) is also unlikely since Mahathir would not want to see Anwar as prime minister in his lifetime (deemed as too “liberal” and unsuitable by Mahathir), and Mukhriz’s strength still has some way to go. Option (d) would not receive consensus from most component parties. Therefore, option (b) would be most likely as Harapan would want to seek a reversal to the pre-Sheraton Move status quo.

Harapan generally believes that they are a force of moral good and getting back to power is an urgent necessity. Before Muhyiddin Yassin’s coup, the revised timeline for the handover of the prime ministership was “after the Apec summit” that was scheduled to be held in November this year.
Malaysiakini
Toksah dok bagi lah 6 bulan pun.Jenih akai jenuh ni
satgi dia cari cara nak hantaq bang Non balik ke Sg Buloh...

Of course, Harapan Plus will definitely not agree to put this down to paper and would once again impose a loose timeline of “several months roughly after Apec” for a handover to Anwar. What this translates to is a Mahathir prime ministership of six months. This is a hazardous proposition.

One of the common claims against a two-year timeline or any call for Mahathir to hand over to Anwar was that it would destabilise the government. Anwar’s oft-repeated statement was to “give space” to Mahathir to govern since assurance and stability were essential to govern well.

In other words, if it wasn’t for the unusual circumstance of Anwar being in prison before GE14, any imposition of a transition plan with a timeline would not be good for anyone.  What we have learned is that there is no such thing as a peaceful handover of prime ministership as most prime ministers would want to stay on as long as they can.

What has been revealed through the backdoor meetings of Harapan leaders is that leaders aligned to Mahathir had always wanted the nonagenarian to stay on as prime minister – even to the point of reneging on the agreement to hand over power to Anwar.

From the people’s perspective, continually changing the premier is also scarring. Policies change, personnel reshuffle and politics go on overdrive.  Granted, the coup that changed our premier from Mahathir to Muhyiddin was not Harapan’s fault. But inviting and necessitating a transition plan after six months, or worse, “several months”, converts the government into a farce.

Mahathir once told Anwar that setting a timeline to hand over the prime ministership will make him a lame-duck prime minister. I agree.  A prime minister needs the confidence and respect of the cabinet, civil service, and the people.  If the people know that Mahathir will not be a prime minister for long, they will gather around his successor and only treat what he says with a caution of transience.

Therefore, imposing a timeline for a second time is untenable. In fact, on a practical standpoint, no one can get much done in six months. Even an experienced prime minister like Mahathir got little done in the 22 months he served as the seventh prime minister.  He has often lamented that he does not have enough time to make the changes he wants.

What was destroyed by many governments before will take many years to repair. Mahathir knows this more than anyone else.  Imposing a much shorter timeline now – albeit much looser – will inevitably reduce the prime minister to a lame-duck prime minister.

Those who prefer Mahathir to return as prime minister for the third time often base their claims on two notions. One is that without Mahathir, Harapan would not have won GE14.

Two, the “strong influence” and “miracle” of Mahathir is needed to negotiate the seats that Harapan is short of claiming a majority in Parliament. The first notion has often been repeated but never proven, empirically or otherwise.

The broad idea was Mahathir was the key reason why Harapan won the people’s mandate in GE14 – without any proof of public opinion data compared to other vital reasons such as economic pessimism, the GST, employment, or the cost of living.  It also ignores the fact that Bersatu only won 13 seats and only 25-30 percent of Malays voted for Harapan, casting doubt on Mahathir’s influence.

The second notion is even more problematic as it relies on the assumption that Mahathir does not require the rest of the component parties – chiefly, Anwar’s 39 seats from PKR – to get back into power.  Mahathir’s reliance on Harapan’s 92 seats to form a government is greater than Harapan’s reliance on Mahathir’s additional 20 seats to form the government.

Bearing this in mind, the question is whether there is any necessity for Mahathir to hold on to several months as prime minister before Harapan Plus can enjoy a breath of fresh air again – when reforms are no longer an impossible dream.

In the absence of a strong moral, procedural or political claim to the prime ministership, there is no reason why our country needs Mahathir to return for the third time. After all, Mahathir only has six MPs on his side – a 2.7 percent legitimacy to stake a claim for equal and overriding partnership. - James Chai

Its really madness ...he resigned n now he wants it bc.....crazy ..Dont think for a second for TunM to be in the equation for pm again......may be he still want to put you back again at Sg Buloh... if you gv him the 3rd chance...rakyat will not forgive you for this mistake....no more SABAR PERENGKAT DEWA.....time to teach TunM some lessons n rakyat love to see that happen.....PH lost because of him n this need to be remembered.."

Jangan menyerah Ds Anwar. Terus kunci ketat permainan sang saka tua yu. Kali ni jangan beri muka lagi!!! If rakan2 PH yg pro sang Saka tua tu bolehlah kembali stand asal iaitu bersatu letak Anwar as pm9. Sang saka tua bila rasa ditinggalkan nak tak nak terpaksa mengikut. Haaa nampak? - Man Toba

I can see clearly now - Anwar
is Harapan’s PM candidate...

I can see clearly now that the "rain" is gone – all the obstacles (read traitors and turncoats) inside the Harapan coalition we voted into power in GE14 are now gone - and for the better. I can see clearly now that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration of Muhyiddin Yassin is shaky as his "backdoor government" clearly lacks the support of the majority of Malaysians. Its legitimacy is also seriously in doubt.

Even Muhyiddin can see that clearly himself as he is now considering the option of calling for fresh elections by year-end, as reported. I can also see clearly now that PKR president Anwar Ibrahim is the new chairperson of the Pakatan Harapan Plus coalition and that it is very clear to me that he should be the prime minister candidate of the opposition group.

Unfortunately, there is another contender to be PM – Dr Mahathir Mohamad. This is where the dynamics in Harapan turns delicate and tricky. It is also clear to many of us that Mahathir is now planning a counter-coup with his Harapan Plus allies. To those supporting such a move, they are probably saddened that the choice of the PM candidate remains the sore point.

Early this week, Mahathir made a rare appearance (below) at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya to attend a Harapan meeting chaired by Anwar. Also present was Parti Warisan president Shafie Apdal who was on the PKR premises for the first time.

All later emerged from the meeting declaring that there would be “positive news” from the coalition within a week.  It soon became clear that the meeting has yet to decide on the PM candidate – the issue continues to stick out like a sore thumb.

Last Friday, PKR, DAP and Amanah leaders met again – this time without Mahathir and Shafie.  We can guess the meeting’s top agenda after a Harapan announcement that their PM candidate will be revealed coming Tuesday.

There is something which I cannot see clearly – why is Mahathir still keen on becoming prime minister for the third time? I keep asking myself whether I am blind or is it Mahathir who is blind. I find it difficult to comprehend why a man of 95 is still interested to be the nation’s chief executive, a position he had held for 22 years and 22 months over two different periods of his long life.

And if I have heard correctly, Mahathir only wants to be prime minister for six months after which he would pass the baton to Anwar. Perhaps there is something Mahathir can clearly see ahead of him which you and I cannot.  However, I am still uncertain whether I should trust Mahathir’s instincts again and give him the benefit of the doubt after what had happened over the past two years.

What I cannot see, ahead of Mahathir’s moves, has put me in a dilemma. Somehow, the trust and confidence I had in Mahathir prior to GE14 are sadly lacking this time. Let me be honest and relate this little tale. In April, a Harapan leader, a dear friend, asked me what I thought of the Mahathir-Anwar joint statement where the duo have agreed to set aside their differences and work together again to wrest power from the backdoor government of Muhyiddin.

My initial reaction was sheer disbelief: “Seriously? Mahathir and Anwar together – surely, not again. What a dumb move!” With due respect, after what happened in February, I had had enough of the Mahathir-Anwar combo. I wanted Harapan to move on and start afresh.

I no longer have faith in the hopeless Harapan that was hopeless in handling power, leaving Malaysians hopelessly in a limbo. We need leaders who know what they are doing to inspire and bring hope and positive changes to the nation.  Malaysians need role models around them. Leaders must provide clear directions on how to move the nation forward.

My dream for Malaysia is a fresh start with 222 new members of Parliament. No more Harapan, Harapan Plus or PN. Enough of the same breed of politicians. Since that is not likely to happen, I am stuck with what is on display before me and will make the most of it. In Pakatan Harapan Plus, Anwar should be the PM candidate just as he has rightly been chosen to be the opposition leader.

In a recent interview with Malaysiakini, Anwar conceded that some Harapan lawmakers have pragmatic views and want Mahathir to be the premier candidate in order to secure the numbers needed to gain a majority in Parliament. But realpolitik or not, Anwar, the decision is not yours alone to make. It is also not for the 20-odd people on the Harapan presidential council to make. Ultimately, the position of Malaysians matters.

On this issue of the PM candidate, there is only one name for now. He should be Anwar Ibrahim, love him or loathe him. That, I can see clearly now. - Francis Paul Siah

Org kata  bebas rasuah bukan bebaskan perasuah...

- Shahbudin Husin

Can we still look to Tun M
for another miracle?...

PM Muhyiddin's effort to combat the coronavirus outbreak has been commendable, but unfortunately this alone is not going to assure him he can always keep his PM seat, nor his party PPBM remains solid as ever.

While fighting the virus, he is also trying to rope in more elected reps, Indeed, there are too many political frogs constantly making noise in the midst, totally unprincipled, dishonorable and morally depraved.

Tun M is not going to be left out as he is prowling to make a comeback soon. The thing is, how many people will place their trust on this old man again, save for Pakatan Harapan? To seize the lost power, PH will still opt to dance with the devil, knowing very well he could hardly be trusted.

Anwar seems to have somewhat changed in recent weeks. He has started to get tough with Mahathir, having refused to meet him on several occasions and absented himself from press conferences he chaired. Party insiders say Anwar's tolerance for Mahathir has been stretched to a limit and he is not going to submit himself to the old man any more.

We all know that Anwar's attitude will sooner or later soften for the sake of power. Expectedly, the two men met again before long. On June 10, Mahathir made a personal call at PKR headquarters to attend the PH meeting to discuss the PM candidate if PH++ gets to rule again. The PM post is the only palpable barrier standing in the way of PH–Mahathir cooperation. We have yet to see whether Anwar will make himself a fool once again.

Given the current political chaos in the country, political frogs have become a tradable commodity. Both Mahathir and PH are racing against time to get elected reps on their side while seizing any available opportunity to talk the 18 GPS MPs into joining them, which will significantly boost their chances of returning to power. Mahathir's son Mukhriz has claimed that PH will form a new government before the parliamentary sitting resumes in July. Both PN and PH claim they have the numbers.

The numbers are, in reality, no longer important, as frogs can hop from one side to another and statutory declarations can be signed carelessly. Mahathir has said the numbers keep appearing and disappearing and he just doesn't know whether he has the numbers!

Indeed, power will make one crazy, and once the sweet taste of power is savored, it will stay etched in the mind and be grabbed back at all costs if lost. In order to grab the power, many politicians have forgotten that the power entrusted to them actually comes from the rakyat, who are their real bosses. When power is at hand, they become arrogant and would indiscriminately abuse that power.

Mahathir is now working very hard to recapture that power from the hands of Muhyiddin. In addition to getting more MPs to support him, he also challenges Muhyiddin in the court over the termination of party membership of him and four others. He insists he is still the party's legitimate chairman.

Muhyiddin not only needs to put up a good show in combating the virus, he also has tons of political challenges to face. To consolidate PPBM's position in the ruling coalition, he has proposed to register PN as a formal alliance, but that does not seem to work out quite nicely.

Majority of PPBM leaders and members were from Umno, both parties sharing very identical DNA. No one can tell for sure MPs defecting to PPBM post-GE14 will not go back to Umno one day. Which side will these people stand if a snap election is called soon, or if Muhyiddin's administration would last until the next general election is due?
UMNO-Bersatu harmonising relationship in PN - Bastien | Astro Awani

There were as many as 46 parliamentary seats that saw three-cornered fights among Umno, PAS and PPBM in GE14. Of these seats, PPBM only won ten while Umno and PAS took 30 and six respectively. It will be inconceivable for Muhyiddin to get Umno to hand over these seats to his party, and pro-Mahathir former education minister Maszlee Malik is skeptical PPBM can even retain the existing ten seats.

The fundamental support bases of these three parties are all Malay-dominant constituencies. Once the Parliament is dissolved, all these parties will be operating on their own. Neither Umno nor PAS is going to negotiate seat allocation with you!

Muhyiddin was unlucky enough to have assumed the PM post at a time the country's coronavirus outbreak was on the verge of an explosive growth. And with the virus now somewhat under control, he has to muster all his energy to tackle the siege from PH and Mahathir.

Mahathir has never absented himself from the Malaysian governments during the past four decades. Save for his 22 years as prime minister, he also made himself visible during Abdullah's and Najib's administrations. He took out Abdullah to install Najib, and then took out the latter to become PM himself, again.

This February, his rushy resignation killed the PH administration, and he was then fighting to get reinstated. He will not call it a day until Muhyiddin—the unpresumable eighth prime minister who betrayed and unseated him—is taken out of office.

Mahathir still has the clout, and is now making advances towards becoming the country's ninth prime minister, another world record indeed! But, can we still look to him to deliver another miracle? - Pook Ah Lek, Sin Chew Daily

Najib's Races Plans Into Action To Get Off The Hook?
Najib's Races Plans Into Action
To Get Off The Hook?...

The moves to get charges dropped against UMNO’s warlords appear to have moved into urgent top gear – is this a sign that the coup coalition fears time may be running out?

Yesterday the former AG Apandi (who in 2016 declared that the 1MDB investigation proved no evidence of wrongdoing whilst waving the incriminating evidence for all to see) was once more put to work seeking to allege the prosecutor in Najib’s 1MDB trial was compromised.

Now, it has emerged, Najib’s allies immediately headed down to the police station reporting alleged ‘treason’ against former PM Mahathir Mohamad in connection with the issue!
UMNO tactic is to try to jail Mahathir for urging AG Apandi to proceed over 1MDB

Tactic to excuse charges being dropped

After years of silence on such matters Apandi made his surprise intervention claiming that the prosecutor leading the case against Najib in the 1MDB trial, Gopal Sri Ram, was somehow compromised because, according to Apandi, Sri Ram asked him whilst he was Attorney General to proceed against Najib over 1MDB back before the GE14 election. In short, it appears that Sri Ram, a former federal judge, had advised Apandi to do his job.

It may seem a stretch, but the coup conspirators need some sort of fig leaf to excuse evident plans to use the hijacking of the Malaysian government to drop the multiple charges of theft against Najib and fellow UMNO warlords and it seems they have chosen this.

Naturally, they have made their attack as aggressive as possible suggesting that it is Mahathir and Sri Ram* who should be jailed, not the man who accepted stolen billions of public money into his private bank accounts.

According to the police report, placed by UMNO Supreme Council Member Lokman Adam (who has been charged with contempt for threatening witnesses at Najib’s trial):

“The previous AG Tan Sri Apandi revealed a part of his book that Gopal Sri Ram, a retired Judge, had passed on Dr Mahathir’s request that Apandi arrest and charge Najib, the PM at that time. When asked why Najib had to be arrested and charged, Gopal replied that this was to be done for no reason as many people would like it. The actions of Gopal were treacherous because they were tantamount to bringing down a legitimate government.

Apandi’s revelations are serious and worry me because as soon as Dr. Mahathir became PM, he appointed Gopal Sri Ram as the prosecutor involving the cases of Najib and Rosmah. The purpose of this report is to enable the police to investigate the truth of Apandi’s statement in view of the fact that he has CCTV coverage as proof and also witnesses in support. If true, Dr, Mahathir and Gopal Sri Ram have to face justice.” [English translation]

This may seem ridiculous, however Najib’s artful lawyers will doubtless concoct a tale of prejudice over which they plan to troop into their newly appointed AGs office to demand charges be dropped. Then they will hope for relative plain sailing steered by money and connections.

Najib makes new attempt to disqualify Sri Ram as prosecutor

Once ‘Bosku’ is back and distributing his stolen cash again, according to this script, charges can indeed be brought against all the people who earlier sought to bring him to book. Ideally, they will hope to achieve all this without calling Parliament at all (it has already been illegally prorogued under ’emergency’ declarations by the PM without a mandate).

If necessary, they will aim for a Covid election inflamed by the racial tensions they have stoked for years to cover up their criminal activities.

This move doesn’t get Najib off his SRC case, of course, which has a separate legal team or Rosmah off her cases either. However, now the ball is set rolling the legal network is already abuzz with talk of pressure being brought to bear in all directions. This was how Najib/BN operated pre-GE14 as the country knows. They think money and establishment friends will help them pull it off.

Rosmah herself has set the tone, with the angry announcements emerging yesterday that her Hermes bag collection (which she has plainly been set on getting back) has been tainted by markers made by police. They are branded forever as criminal items, which might spoil it for her if she tried to sport them publicly once more.

An independent police force would, of course, dismiss this discredited UMNO bigwig’s interventions. BN/PN bullies will press their case with Najib’s high stakes gamble to overturn the verdict of GE14 and cheat the rule of law. - Sarawak Report

Leaked audio: 'Muhyiddin' claims palace preferred Dr M as PM even if gov't changes...

A Facebook page aligned with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has leaked yet another audio recording that purportedly came from a Bersatu supreme council meeting on Feb 23.

This time, a voice resembling that of Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin is heard telling a group of people that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong was in favour of retaining Mahathir as prime minister even in the event of a change of government.

The voice proposed a scenario whereby Mahathir would not resign but become the leader of a Perikatan Nasional-led government and that he (the voice) has already told Mahathir that he has consulted a former chief justice who advised that a resignation won’t be necessary.

“So, in 'Situation A' that is the status quo Mahathir as prime minister and even if we move to 'Situation B', Mahathir won’t have to resign and remains as prime minister.

“(He is) reimposing position but moving from Pakatan Harapan to Perikatan Nasional. Supposedly, that is. Perhaps it did not work out. That’s the situation,” the voice said in the audio clip posted last night.

The voice also supposedly claimed that the Agong had been informed of this plan on several occasions.

“The Agong’s sentiments, quote, unquote, he prefers this, what we are saying.

“He doesn’t get along (tak kena) with (PKR president) Anwar Ibrahim. He spoke frankly. Not that he wants to ‘sabotage’ him but he doesn’t like Anwar, if that is possible,” the voice said.

He also said a delegation of six people including himself was supposed to have an audience with the king at 6pm that day. The five others were purported to be former PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, Warisan president Shafie Apdal, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Gabungan Parti Sarawak chairperson Abang Johari Tun Openg, and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

For the record, Warisan ultimately took sides with Harapan for the Sheraton Move that took place in late February. The voice said the delegation would attempt to show the Agong that Mahathir has the support of 133 MPs to form a new government through statutory declarations (SDs).

“The SDs mainly state support for Mahathir and whatever. So Mahathir can form A or B if he says so. Whatever.

“It’s open-ended. We don’t say we support Anwar or whoever else. I think that is not relevant, Anwar is not on my book,” the voice said.

The audience before the Agong did not materialise but was postponed to the next day instead, the voice said. Malaysiakini is unable to independently verify the contents of the audio recording.

However, when contacted last night, a Bersatu leader told this news portal that the recording was authentic. The source said the recording was in the early part of the Feb 23 meeting which started with Mahathir explaining that he disagrees with the proposal to take Bersatu out of the Harapan coalition.

The recording showed Muhyiddin's attempts to persuade the supreme council to disagree with Mahathir’s stance, the source said. Malaysiakini has contacted Muhyiddin's office, Bersatu supreme council members and the palace on the audio clip and is waiting for their response.

Previously, through a series of leaked audio clips, the pro-Mahathir Facebook page had purported that Mahathir, during the Feb 23 meeting, had made an impassioned plea to the supreme council not to pressure him to renege on his promise to step down as prime minister this year,

It also purported that Muhyiddin proposed enticing Umno MPs to defect to Bersatu by using ministerial and GLC posts as lures. Towards the end of the meeting, it was purported that Muhyiddin told the council to entrust Mahathir with deciding on whether to leave Harapan.

For the record, after the meeting, PN leaders - plus Shafie - had met Mahathir (above) at his home that afternoon to make another attempt to convince Mahathir to leave Harapan but to no avail.

Muhyiddin, Azmin, and other leaders from Bersatu, Umno, and PAS then gathered at the Sheraton Hotel in Petaling Jaya that night, triggering what is now known as the Sheraton Move that led to the collapse of the Harapan-led government.

When Mahathir supposedly realised what had happened the next morning, he resigned as prime minister and Bersatu chairperson but was retained as acting prime minister by the king.

In his royal address in Parliament on May 18, the Agong said he had tried to convince Mahathir not to resign, but eventually accepted the resignation with sadness.

Muhyiddin, meanwhile, declared Bersatu’s exit from Harapan on the afternoon of Feb 24, and later successfully convinced Mahathir to rescind his resignation as party chairperson.

The resignation as Bersatu chairperson is now a point of contention, as Muhyiddin’s faction in Bersatu now claims the supreme council has no power to reject Mahathir’s resignation. Muhyiddin had assumed the position of Bersatu acting chairperson. This against the backdrop of Bersatu spilt between supporters of Muhyiddin and Mahathir. - mk

Apa cer mesyuarat PH di HQ Keadilan semalam...

Image may contain: one or more people and eyeglasses, text that says 'm malaysiakini PH dan sekutu ada 107 KERUSI parlimen -Anwar'
PH Plus has 107 seats on its side...

"Pakatan Harapan Plus" has a total of 107 parliament seats in its hands, says PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim today. The opposition chief revealed this during a Facebook Live session this afternoon, where he touched on yesterday's meeting between Harapan component party leaders and their allies, namely the Bersatu faction loyal to former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Warisan under Sabah Chief Minister Shafie Apdal.

"We got together and reached an agreement. (That) whatever strategy we use, we must stay together. The opposition must stand firm on its principles. "Now we have 107 (seats) in this group (Harapan Plus), and we will move forward as a team to ensure that the people's mandate is respected, and all the 'kebobrokan' (damages), chaos, and corruption are put to a stop," he said.

Anwar was referring to Harapan Plus' meeting yesterday at PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya, where its top party leaders including Mahathir, Shafie, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu were present. It was reported that the meeting was held to discuss, among others, the coalition's candidate for prime minister if they manage to retake Putrajaya from Perikatan Nasional.

In February, the then Harapan federal government was toppled when it supposedly lost the majority in Parliament after a number of its MPs crossed over to form the Perikatan Nasional coalition with opposition parties. These include top leaders from its Bersatu component party and PKR leaders who defected to join Bersatu in forming PN.
Image may contain: 2 people, people standing and indoor

However, the past two weeks had seen rumours spreading that Harapan and its allies have supposedly garnered support from more MPs including those in the government. They are said to have enough numbers to regain control of Putrajaya.

Malaysia has a total of 222 parliamentary seats, and its first-past-the-post system requires any political entity to have a simple majority of at least 112 MPs to form a government. Anwar also criticised politicians who are willing to be bought with position and wealth. He described such politicians as those who are willing to trade themselves off.

"They do not stand true to their principles. Whoever has some debt, or promised a minister position or to head a government-linked company (GLC), then they are willing to change their direction. "How low," he said. The PN government is doing this because they are weak, Anwar added. - mk

I like when Anwar said that Pakatan Harapan has 107 MPs support in Parliament It is more realistic. No need the rush to chase the numbers from 107, 111, 115 or 129 and so on... What is more important is the cooperation of the Tun Mahathir,Warisan and PH groups of parties. No need to feel bad and no need to question who is worthy of being a PM... - f/bk

100 hari:Dahkah kabinet Din isytihar harta...

It's now or later?...

Somehow Bersatu MP for Alor Gajah Datuk Seri Redzuan Md Yusof deemed it right to call for an urgent press conference a day after the Bersatu supreme council met last Thursday night. Incidentally this was the council's first meeting since Bersatu exited Pakatan Harapan in February's political coup.

If you recall, Redzuan was also said to have scheduled a press conference a few weeks ago which made many in the political fraternity expecting him to quit the party and government. Redzuan, as we know, is minister in the Muhyiddin Yassin administration. That press conference did not take place.

But this time his press conference was held as scheduled amidst speculation he would be quitting. However, Redzuan announced he was not resigning and would instead continue serving Muyiddin's cabinet. That must be sweet music to Muhyiddin as he is on shaky ground in running the country with his Perikatan Nasional government.
KTemoc Konsiders ........: Kipas Kerbau Kon

A day earlier, Bersatu MP for Sri Gading Datuk Sharuddin Salleh quit his deputy minister post but apparently wanted to remain in the party as a government backbencher. And more sweet music for the prime minister when PKR Lubuk Antu MP Jugah Muyang defected to give support to Perikatan Nasional. Also Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz, who is an independent, submitted his application form to join Muhyiddin's Bersatu party.

Despite such sweetness, majority in Parliament is still not comfortable. A slight shift can see him losing the prime minister's post and Perikatan Nasional losing power to rule. Hence, the talk now is that Pakatan Harapan is having the numbers and is poised to return as government. Several political pundits and analysts are even citing the exact number supposedly already in Pakatan's bag.

But DAP's Liew Chin Tong has been quoted as saying it's too early to say Pakatan has 130 MPs in its corner going on to say. I know there are rumors now as if it has already happened but there are still many variables. And even Tun Mahathir Mohamad is saying "numbers keep on appearing and disappearing. We don't know."

However, some coalition leaders in downplaying the matter are nevertheless on record saying talks and discussions are under way to bring back the mandate of the people. Political commentators believe the only issue to be settled is on the prime minister's post – whether it's Mahathir or Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Settle that, they say, Pakatan's comeback is complete.

As for the numbers in hand, observers believe Pakatan has enough, regardless 130 or any other figure. Don't know if they still have enough like Mahathir said numbers appear and disappear and considering the current fluid situation. But the question, is where do the numbers come from? To state the obvious, from people on the other side. But wouldn't that make Pakatan be seen as doing what its enemies had done in February?

Ilham Center head of research Associate Professor Dr Yusri Ibrahim sees it this way: When a ship is sinking everybody does not want to be the last one to jump off. We will see many rushing to abandon ship. A few days ago, Harakah Daily ran an article asking albeit sarcastically if Pakatan Harapan is now making moves for a back door government? Harakah, as we know, is the official mouthpiece of PAS and it would not be wrong to say such its opinion articles reflect the views of PAS.

That is an obvious swipe on Pakatan who had called the Perikatan Nasional administration a back door government. However, it's worth noting that PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has described the Perikatan Nasional government which his party is part of, as one which came by punching a hole in the roof, or in his own words, kerajaan tebuk atap. I wonder if a roof top government has the same meaning as a back door one. Perhaps to Hadi, coming in from the atap is better than coming in through pintu belakang. I don't know.

But prime minister Muhyiddin has admitted in public and on live national television that his government is not the government the rakyat voted for. This was when he announced the economic stimulus package to ease the hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He said his government would care for the people although the people did not vote for it to be government.

To Pakatan, what they are doing is to reclaim the mandate of the people. The people's mandate, they said, was given to them at GE14 in 2018. Logically, said a political observer, Pakatan should not be the opposition when in fact it won GE14 quite comfortably. Another political observer said one cannot be overly critical on attempts by PH plus (the moniker for Pakatan, Mahathir's Bersatu and Warisan) to wrest power by playing the numbers game.

Nobody likes horse trading but Pakatan was clearly toppled through a power grab by getting MPs to switch sides, and now Pakatan is seeking to restore a parliament reflective of the people's mandate, said the observer. Pakatan, according to him, has every right to restore that mandate without waiting for GE15. And if I may add, Pakatan should strike when the iron is hot. Didn't the late British prime minister Harold Wilson said that a week is a long time in politics?

The next election, said the observer, should be about Pakatan Harapan seeking a fresh mandate based on its accomplishments for these two years or so. But first, I would say the one issue which can be a spoiler, if not settled amicably and fast, is the one concerning the premiership. Rest assured enemies of Pakatan Harapan, big problems of their own notwithstanding, will spare no effort to exploit it. - Mohsin Abdullah, sinchewdaily

A reminder to those dealing with authorities...

It was a reported a few days ago that an aide to the Muar MP, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, alleged in a press conference that she was harassed by officers from the MACC.

The aide, Siti Nurul Hidayah (above), claimed that MACC officers shouted vulgar words to her and threatened to physically assault her. She also claimed that the officers ordered her to stand on one leg and raise both hands for 30 minutes.

The press conference garnered public attention. After the MACC’s image which went through a recovery stage during the Pakatan Harapan administration, what was said to have happened to Siti Nurul was worrying.  Many raised alarm bells of a return to the "dark days" of old, when state institutions were abused for political purposes.

The MACC has denied the allegations. A police report has been lodged, and it is hoped that a transparent and free investigation will be conducted by the relevant authorities. At the same time, the issues surrounding the allegations are hotly discussed. Many want to know what their rights are when arrested by the authorities, or when called upon to assist investigations.

What is important to distinguish at the outset is the difference between a suspect of a crime and a witness who may assist investigations. Both may be asked to give statements, but there is a difference between how they would be asked to do so.

For a witness, the authorities will usually contact and request the person to attend a location to give a statement. A notice will be issued and the person asked to attend must comply. Failure to do will result in further action to compel attendance.

However, for suspects, they will usually be arrested for investigations. They will then be remanded and while in remand they will be interrogated and be asked to provide a statement. It must be stressed that circumstances whereby a person is prevented from moving freely, asked to go to the police station or confined to a room, would all effectively amount to an arrest.

It matters not whether the arresting person denies the arrest or otherwise. As such, a person who feels that he or she is arrested should inquire as to whether he or she is arrested. An arrested person has several rights which are guaranteed. These include the right to be informed of the grounds of the arrest. The person making the arrest must inform the arrested person why he or she has been arrested.

Another important right is the right to consult a lawyer. This right is constitutionally guaranteed, and it can only be delayed and not denied.

Make no mistake. We all want the authorities to deal with crimes in the country. In this regard, we must give due support to the authorities, whether they be the police, MACC or other bodies.

The vast majority of officers in these bodies carry out their duties honestly and diligently. But at the same time, those who have been conferred powers must use the power given within the framework which has been allowed.  The small few who transgress the boundaries of jurisdiction and power must be brought to justice.

To those dealing with the authorities, always remember that as citizens of this country we have certain rights and if our rights are violated there will be avenues to seek remedy from the violators. - Syahredzan Johan,mk

Pakatan Harapan’s Succession
Plans and Economic Challenges...

The fifth and final session of the Forum focused on Malaysia and featured two eminent speakers: Mr Rafizi Ramli (Vice-President, Parti Keadilan Rakyat, Malaysia) and Dr Nungsari Ahmad Radhi (Chairman of Khazanah Research Institute, Malaysia). Dr Francis E. Hutchinson (Senior Fellow and Coordinator, Malaysia Studies Programme, ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute) moderated the session.

Mr Rafizi Ramli began the discussion by highlighting the significant decline in Pakatan Harapan’s approval ratings in the eighteen months since the party had been in power, from around 80 per cent in June 2018 to around 30 per cent in December 2019. This has, once again, brought the coalition’s leadership transition issue to the fore. While Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has consistently spoken about his willingness to pass the premiership to Anwar Ibrahim, there is no clear timeline nor indication that the handover will begin at any time soon. According to Mr Rafizi, the succession will be decided by a small group of individuals (comprising of Members of Parliament, and members of Pakatan Harapan’s Presidential Council) and will most likely take place after the conclusion of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings in November 2020. There is also a possibility that the transition may not be very smooth, resulting in a major political fallout. The odds, however, are in Anwar Ibrahim’s favour, as he enjoys the backing of the largest bloc of parliamentarians.

Dr Nungsari Ahmad Radhi highlighted that the country has now entered its third year of having less-than-five per cent in GDP growth. He however maintained that this statistic should not matter much. Instead, policymakers should instead focus on the growing economic inequality in the country. The widening disparity between the rich and poor – as reflected by, among other indices, extremely high levels of household debts (around 80 per cent of GDP in 2019) and limited social security nets – suggests that much more needs to be done to help Malaysia attain high-income status in the near future. - ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute
