A roadblock on the main road leading to the PAS headquarters in Pekan, Pahang, where PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim spoke yesterday, caused a traffic jam five kilometres long.According to Kuala Selangor MP Dzulkefly Ahmad ( right), those wanting to hear Anwar speak ended up stuck in the traffic gridlock for "more than 40 minutes".
He said the roadblock was mounted just before Pekan’s main bridge Jambatan Abu Bakar.
He added that the traffic jam caused a delay to the ceramah so much
so that Anwar's speech went beyond the 12am police permit limit.
"The police were there at 12am on the dot, but (Anwar) managed to extend the programme, saying that it's only fair due to the troubles we had to go through to get there," he said.
Dzulkefly said about 3,000 people attended the event, "mostly local", which he observed was "unusual for Pekan".
Anwar spent the whole of yesterday in Prime Minister Najib Razak's home state Pahang.
The parliament seat of Pekan is held by Najib, who ‘inherited' it from his father, Abdul Razak Hussein, Malaysia's second prime minister, following his death in 1976.
"I ended up travelling by motorcycle to the venue 3km away. Anwar also had to take a bike from 5km away."

Kesesakan 5km di ceramah Anwar...
Sekatan jalan raya di jalan utama menuju ke ibupejabat PAS di Pekan, tempat ceramah Ketua Umum PKR, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim semalam, menyebabkan berlaku kesesakan lalulintas sepanjang lima kilometer.
Menurut Ahli Parlimen Kuala Selangor, Dzulkefly Ahmad, mereka yang mahu mendengar ceramah Anwar terperangkap dalam kesesakan tersebut selama "lebih daripada 40 minit".
Katanya, beliau terpaksa ke tempat ceramah dengan menaiki motosikal, begitu juga dengan Anwar.
Menurutnya lagi, kesesakan lalulintas itu menyebabkan kelewatan ceramah bermula, sehinggakan ucapan Anwar melebihi waktu had permit polis sehingga jam 12 tengah malam.
Katanya lagi, anggota polis berada tepat jam 12 tengah malam, tetapi Anwar dapat melanjutkan program tersebut, kerana masalah kesesakan untuk ke sana.
Dzulkefly berkata, kira-kira 3,000 orang menghadiri program tersebut, "kebanyakannya penduduk tempatan", yang disifatkannya sebagai "luar biasa bagi Pekan".
Kerusi Parlimen Pekan diwakili Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, yang 'diwarisi' dari bapanya, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein - perdana menteri kedua Malaysia, yang meninggal dunia pada tahun 1976.

MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek kicked off
the much anticipated ‘Malaysian Chinese At the Political Crossroads’
conference today with an all out verbal assault against Pakatan Rakyat,
ahead of his debate against DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
In
his speech officiating the event, Chua contended that should Pakatan
form the next federal government, the federal constitution would be in
“jeopardy” because of PAS’ Islamic agenda.
Chua argued that PAS’ “obsession” with implementing hudud law was a threat to the prevailing legal and judicial system embodied in the Malaysian constitution.
“Malaysians have to ask themselves: what is the track-record of hudud oriented states? How have they fared in terms of governance?
“Have they reduced the level of corruption? Countries that practice hudud are mostly corrupt. Have they curbed abuse of power? Are hudud states of higher moral calibre than other states?” asked Chua.
‘Hudud under Pakatan is real’
Chua said that while Pakatan has claimed that the hudud agenda was not part of its policy document - the Buku Jingga - it will not guarantee that PAS will not push for it when the coalition comes to power.
“In the 1999 general election, hudud was not mentioned in the opposition’s common manifesto but within months of assuming power in Terengganu, PAS formulated hudud legislation,” said Chua. The legislation which outlines punitive action such as stoning to death for adultery is still in place today after BN took over the state in 2004.
Chua pointed out that the PAS-led Kedah state government has already announced that it will follow Kelantan’s footsteps in implementing hudud law, and that PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim had “very slyly” expressed his personal commitment towards hudud.
“Though the danger of hudud becoming reality under Pakatan rule is real, there are some naive commentators who insist that the DAP will be able to check PAS’ agenda,” he said.
‘Racially charged DAP’
In contrast, Chua said BN’s approach was “diametrically” different from PAS’, which had a “puritanical zeal” that curbs women rights, interaction between sexes, public access to entertainment and the freedom of cultural expression.
Chua’s hudud bashing spree took place while keynote speaker and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak listened on.
Meanwhile, Chua also claimed that DAP was becoming so “racially charged” to the point of being “arrogant”.
“DAP in its campaign, especially with the Chinese crowd, likes to allude to their success in forming the Penang government and a DAP leader as the chief minister.
“This has given false hope to the Chinese that this is possible in other states. By tradition, this is only possible in Penang but not others.
“Hence, DAP has been planting hope in the minds of an approximately 6.5 million Malaysian Chinese that a Chinese-led government is possible and that Malaysian Chinese have been short-changed by MCA,” he said.
Against the odds
A case in point, said Chua, was the case of the short-lived Pakatan government in Perak, where DAP won the most seats, but the menteri besar’s position was ceded to PAS, which had the least number of seats.
Moreover, he pointed out that DAP was now receptive of a PAS nominee for the position of Johor menteri besar.
“In short, a vote for DAP is a vote for PAS and PKR, as they are partners in Pakatan. To empower DAP is to strengthen PAS and paving the way for PAS to be the ‘taiko (big brother)’ in the state and federal government,” he said.
The highly watched conference today will see four topics being discussed, and will feature one DAP leader in each session facing up to five top Chinese BN leaders.
Some sessions will be moderated by MCA leaders such as Fong Chan Onn, Ng Yen Yen and Kong Cho Ha.
The event will culminate in a debate between Chua and Lim, that will be televised live.
The event is jointly organised by Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute(Asli) and MCA’s think tank Institute of Strategic Analysis and Policy Research (Insap)

Pointless if extremists still sponsored, says Guan Eng...
Lim Guan Eng said today it is meaningless trying to
combat radicalism when “sustenance and even sponsorship is offered to
bigoted and extremist organisation.”
The DAP has repeatedly criticised Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s move to fight extremism by forming the Global Movement of Moderates, saying the prime minister’s Umno was itself a danger to moderation.
The Umno president had said embracing moderation and rejecting all forms of extremism is the only way for the world to move forward and for all countries to co-exist in peace at the launch of the movement on January 17.
But DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang responded by saying Najib must first transform Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia, which has previously accused DAP of trying to turn Malaysia into a Christian state, to prove he qualifies as a voice of global moderation.
DAP publicity chief Tony Pua also said the following week that “the game that Umno and Perkasa are playing... is a highly dangerous one which may forever tarnish Malaysia’s reputation as a moderate country.”
Guan Eng also said today “we must be wary of those who use the holy books for their own private and selfish ends — those who speak with forked tongues and quote the Scriptures in vain” in his speech at the event held in conjunction with the United Nations’ World Inter-Faith Harmony Week.
The Penang chief minister added that “true moderation can only come from knowledge and understanding” as those who are “ignorant and fearful about the place of his religion and of his relationship with persons of other faiths is bound to be defensive and extreme in his dealings with other faiths.”
Muslims and Christians have repeatedly disagreed over the use of the word “Allah” to denote God in Malay-language bibles as well as alleged proselytising of Muslims in the past two years.
Several houses of worship were fire-bombed in early 2010 following a court ruling allowing the Catholic Church to publish the word “Allah”.
Muslim NGOs formed Himpunan Sejuta Umat (Gathering of a Million Faithful) this year in response to “the threat of Christianisation.”
Malaysia’s 28 million population is over 60 per cent Muslim, but more than half its citizens in Sarawak and Sabah, long considered the ruling Barisan Nasional’s vote bank, are predominantly Christian.
